The aim of this study was to assess whether selection breeding in chicory(Cichorium intybus L.)led changes in the susceptibility to Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli contamination and whether the anatomical traits of the leaves are involved in the possible *** chicory genotypes subjected to different intensities of selection were compared at the microgreen *** retention was evaluated after leaf incubation for 1.5 h on the surface of the bacterial suspension,followed by rinsing,grinding,plating on selective media,and colony forming unit(CFU)*** density of stomata and trichomes,total stomatal length and width,stomatal pit width,surface roughness and sharpness were *** intensively selected genotype(Witloof)was significantly more prone to contamination(2.9±0.3 lg CFU/cm^(2))as the average of the two bacterial types than the wild accession(Wild;2.3±0.4 lg CFU/cm^(2))and the moderately selected genotypes(two leaf chicories,Catalogna type,and root chicory'Magdeburg';on average,1.9±0.3 lg CFU/cm^(2)).Witloof microgreens also showed larger stomata(on average+34%for stoma width and+44%for pit width),which could justify,at least in part,the higher susceptibility to enterobacterial *** fact,when contamination was performed in the dark(closed stomata),the bacterial retention in Witloof was significantly reduced in comparison with the opened stomata(-44%)and in Wild(-26%).Differences in retention between Witloof and Wild were still observed after UV *** hierarchical clustering performed by grouping the leaf anatomical features was consistent with the chicory genetic *** results suggest that the domestication process can affect the safety of produce and that the micromorphological traits of the leaves may be involved.

Several studies suggest that smoking may have detrimental effect on seminal parameters and that genetic polymorphisms may influence this effect. In the present paper we have examined the relationship between ACP1 genotypes and the association of smoking and infertility in a sample of men with varicocele. 126 subjects with varicocele were studied. ACP1 genotype was determined by DNA analysis and statistical analyses were performed by SPSS software. In general there is a protective action of low activity *A/*B genotype against infertility that is much more marked in smokers than in non-smokers. If confirmed in other clinical settings, determinations of ACP1 genotype could have practical importance to evaluate the risk of infertility in smokers with varicocele.

AK1 catalyzes the reversible reaction ATP+AMP ? 2ADP thus contributing to the regulation of relative concentration of these important nu-cleotides. Intracellular ATP is a storage of en-ergy for cellular processes, moreover extracel-lular ATP together with ADP, AMP and adeno-sine are critical signalling molecule for sending messages to nearby cells acting on P1 and P2 receptors. AK1 shows a genetic polymorphism and recently our group has shown that the cor-relation between blood glucose and glycated haemoglobin in T2D is dependent on AK1 phe-notype. In the present paper we have carried further studies on the relationship between AK1 phenotypes and T2D. Possible interactions with ABO blood groups and ACP1 polymorphism have also been investigated. We have re-ex-amined the data on 280 subjects with type 2 diabetes from the White population of Penne (Central Italy). 384 consecutive healthy new-borns from the same population have been also studied. A three way contingency table analysis was carried out according to Sokal and Rohlf and other statistical analyses by SPSS pro-grams. T2D patients with AK12-1 phenotype have higher values of blood glucose level and glycated haemoglobin and an increased ten-dency to dyslipidemia and retinopathy. In addi-tion there is an interaction of AK1 with ABO blood groups and with ACP1 polymorphism. The different activity between AK1 phenotypes could influence the relative concentration of ATP, ADP, AMP and adenosine with important effects on metabolic activity thus explaining the associa-tion of AK1 with clinical manifestation of T2D.

The aged population is constantly growing, thus fostering an increase in age-dependent diseases. Among these, diabetic retinopathy (DR) along with age-related macular degeneration entails progressive vision loss. Since such conditions are associated with the proliferation of novel vessels, their pharmacotherapeutic management consists of the intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs, able to hinder the driving of vascular proliferation prompted by vascular endothelial growth factor. The humanized anti-vascular endothelial growth factor monoclonal antibody ranibizumab provided evidence for efficacy in several trials, hence earning approval by the US Food and Drug Administration for therapeutic use in all the stages of DR. Due to the lack of epidemiologic and pharmacoeconomic evaluation in the local Calabria Region context, the present retrospective observational study focused on prevalence of DR and age-related macular degeneration, treatment and cost of therapy with ranibizumab in 870 patients arriving to clinical observation at the "Mater Domini” University Hospital in Calabria, Italy from January 2014 to June 2017. Data were extracted from the database of ophthalmology ward and subjected to statistical analysis. The results suggest that the most frequent retinal diseases are age-related macular degeneration and DR and that the use of ranibizumab has been decreasing over the 4-year study period together with the associated cost per patient which was similar for both disorders. Therefore, appropriateness of treatment with drugs other than ranibizumab needs to be assessed in this setting and deep monitoring of pharmacologic treatment for retinal diseases is necessary to prevent or delay visual acuity decrease and complete vision loss. Study procedures were performed in accordance with the "Mater Domini” University Hospital ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation.

Decrease of serum carnitine levels in patients with or without gastrointestinal cancer cachexia

AIM： To evaluate the levels of serum carnitine in patients with cancer in digestive organs and to compare them with other cancers in order to provide new insights into the mechanisms of cachexia. METHODS： Fifthy-five cachectic patients with or without gastrointestinal cancer were enrolled in the present study. They underwent routine laboratory investigations, including examination of the levels of various forms of carnitine present in serum （i.e., long-chain acylcarnitine, short-chain acylcarnitine, free carnitine, and total carnitine）. These values were compared with those found in 60 cancer patients in good nutritional status as well as with those of 30 healthy control subjects. RESULTS： When the cachectic patients with gastrointestinal cancer were compared with the cachectic patients without gastrointestinal cancer, the difference was -6.8 μmol/L in free carnitine （P 〈 0.005）, 0.04 μmol/ L in long chain acylcarnitine （P 〈 0.05）, 8.7 μmol/L in total carnitine （P 〈 0.001）. In the cachectic patients with or without gastrointestinal cancer, the difference was 12.2 μmol/L in free carnitine （P 〈 0.001）, 4.60 μmol/L in short chain acylcarnitine （P 〈 0.001）, and 0.60 μmol/L in long-chain acylcarnitine （P 〈 0.005） and 17.4 μmol/L in total carnitine （P 〈 0.001）. In the cachectic patients with gastrointestinal cancer and the healthy control subjects, the difference was 15.5 μmol/L in free carnitine （P 〈 0.001）, 5.2 μmol /L in short-chain acylcarnitine （P 〈 0.001）, 1.0 μmol/L in long chain acylcarnitine （P 〈 0.001）, and 21.8 μmol/L in total carnitine （P 〈 0.001）. CONCLUSION： Low serum levels of carnitine in terminal neoplastic patients are decreased greatly due to the decreased dietary intake and impaired endogenous synthesis of this substance. These low serum carnitine levels also contribute to the progression of cachexia in cancer patients.

Infertility in Men with Varicocele: The Role of Age, Smoking and Alcohol Intake

Previous studies have focused on the damaging effects of smoking and alcohol on sperm parameters;however, some of these studies have failed to find a significant correlation between these variables. Herein we have investigated the relationship of infertility with smoking and/or alcohol consumption in one hundred and thirty-six men with varicocele, admitted consecutively to the Outpatients Department of Infertility at the University of Rome La Sapienza (Italy) between 2005-2007. The sample size was small because we have selected couples with both marital infertility lasting for more than two years and the male partner with varicocele. Statistical analyses were carried out using the software of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). We showed a highly significant association of infertility with alcohol consumption. As the mean value was 32 years, comparing men of age less than or equal to 32 years and men of age over 32 years, this association is present only in men of age less than or equal to 32 years. A discriminant analysis with infertility as dependent variable and age, alcohol consumption and smoking habit as independent variables has shown a significant discrimination only in men of age less than or equal to 32 years. The most important contribution to this discrimination was given by alcohol followed by age while contribution from smoking was small. Our analyses suggest that alcohol consumption contributes to infertility in men of age less than or equal to 32 years whereas smoking does not.
