A Simple Test of Seminal Fluid Chemistry and Its Potential Impact on Cryopreservation

Cryopreservation is currently the only effective tool for long-term storage of semen in most species. However, it is well-recognized that, even in species that freeze well, some individuals resist cryopreservation. Work from this laboratory has demonstrated a relationship between maternal lipid content and the chemical constitution of the embryos they produce. The objective of the present study was to determine if a similar relationship might exist in paternal body chemistry and the animal’s semen sample and if such a difference could be determined with a simple weight test. Semen samples were obtained from cattle with known differences in body composition. The samples first underwent semen analysis and were then prepared as either cell-free (CF) or neat specimens (NS). Known volumes of each sample were weighed, and the remainder of the samples was analyzed for lipids, total proteins, and total carbohydrates using a series of spectrophotometric assays and blood chemistry techniques. As expected, weight differences were seen in the CF vs NS preparations of individual semen samples (p < 0.001). Differences were also found in triglycerides (p < 0.001), glucose (p < 0.001), total protein (p < 0.001), and fructose (p < 0.009) of individuals with differing body composition. Statistical analysis suggested a non-linear correlation between the observed weights and total protein (p < 0.047) as well as triglyceride levels (p < 0.003). Together, these data suggest it might be possible to develop an algorithm to allow adjustment in cryoprotectants based on a simple weight procedure, allowing modification of cryoprotectants on an individual basis and potentially improving outcomes for valuable animals currently classified as “poor freezers”.

As digital data of Antarctica is being collected and created at an ever increasing rate,the usefulness of these data for research,GIS analysis and planning has been increasing. Currently there is no formal standard for these datasets to meet,which causes difficulties in integrating data from different *** from scientists and researchers is that in order to perform any kind of GIS analyses on basic and fundamental datasets they need to have access to both:standardised and integrated data (a digital data product) and the `raw’ data in localised areas (a data library).Up until now there has been no coordinated approach or program to acquire,or even access fundamental datasets. The Antarctic Geographic Data Integration (AGDI) project is about bringing it all together,that is,to facilitate the availability of integrated fundamental GIS data for Antarctica through both a data product and a data library. This paper describes what AGDI is,why have it,what its aims are,details on the different components of AGDI and the status of various projects involved in the collection of fundamental *** also briefly outlines what may happen to AGDI developments and a future work program.

Arsenic is usually associated with sulphide minerals formed in the geothermal environment. However, sulphide minerals are prone to dissolution after contact with meteoric water under surface oxidizing conditions. Secondary precipitates that form from the dissolution of the primary sulfides exert a greater influence on arsenic mobility in the geothermal environment. Fe-hydroxides have very good affinity with dissolved arsenate and are stable under most surface oxidizing conditions. Both amorphous silica directly precipitated from geothermal fluids and possibly a kaolinite alteration can host a small significant amount of arsenic. These silicates are also more stable under a wide range ofpH and redox conditions.

Reaction of TaCl(NMe2)4 (1) with KTp* [Tp* = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borohydride] yields two products: Tp*Ta(NMe2)4 (2), in which one N atom of the Tp* ligand binds to Ta, and [Tp*Ta(NMe2)4]· 2KTp* (3) where three N atoms of the Tp* ligand in [Tp*Ta(NMe2)4] (2a) bind to Ta. Addition of excess 1 to 3 did not exclude KTp*. Further reaction of 2 with oxygen affords Tp*BH(NMe2) (4). TpTa(NMe2)4 (5) has been synthesized by a similar procedure through the reaction of 1 with TpK [Tp=tris(pyrazolyl)borohydride]. Reactions of 3 and 5 with oxygen were also studied. 2, 4, and 5 were characterized by NMR, EA, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Homoploid hybrid speciation (HHS) involves the recombination of two differentiated genomes into a novel, functional one without a change in chromosome number. Theoretically, there are numerous ways for two parental genomes to recombine. Hence, chance may play a large role in the formation of a hybrid species. If these genome combinations can evolve rapidly following hybridization and sympatric situations are numerous, recurrent homoploid hybrid speciation is a possibility. We argue that three different, but not mutually exclusive, types of contingencies could influence this process. First, many of these “hopeful monsters” of recombinant parent genotypes would likely have low fitness. Only specific combinations of parental genomic contributions may produce viable, intra-fertile hybrid species able to accommodate potential constraints arising from intragenomic conflict. Second, ecological conditions (competition, geography of the contact zones or the initial frequency of both parent species) might favor different outcomes ranging from sympatric coexistence to the formation of hybrid swarms and ultimately hybrid speciation. Finally, history may also play an important role in promoting or constraining recurrent HHS if multiple hybridization events occur sequentially and parental divergence or isolation differs along this continuum. We discuss under which conditions HHS may occur multiple times in parallel and to what extent recombination and selection may fuse the parent genomes in the same or different ways. We conclude by examining different approaches that might help to solve this intriguing evolutionary puzzle.

Sirolimus plus sorafenib in treating HCC recurrence after liver transplantation: A case report

A case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with pulmonary recurrence after liver transplantation for HCC is presented in this report. The patient showed disease progression on sorafenib therapy demonstrated by computed tomography scans as well as serial serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) elevation. After his immunosuppression therapy was successfully transitioned to sirolimus and a continuation of sorafenib, he achieved partial remission based on RECIST criteria and normalization of AFP. Mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors including sirolimus alone or in conjunction with sorafenib may be useful in the treatment of post transplant HCC.

Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Novel Salt-Tolerant Rice Germplasms from the Philippines and Bangladesh

To screen for new sources of salinity tolerance, 688 traditional rice varieties from the Philippines and Bangladesh were obtained, and their tolerance to hypersaline conditions at the seedling stage was examined. A total of 29 Philippine lines and 15 Bangladeshi lines were scored as *** assessment(plant height, biomass and Na-K ratio) revealed that among the 44 salt-tolerant accessions, Casibon, Kalagnon and Ikogan had significantly higher relative shoot length difference, relative shoot growth reduction and shoot Na-K ratio than the tolerant check ***, AC and Akundo exhibited significantly higher Na-K ratios than the other genotypes. The genetic diversity of the 44 genotypes was assessed using 34 simple sequence repeat markers. A total of 133 alleles were detected across all loci. Cluster analysis showed that AC, Akundo and Kuplod were clustered along with FL478, indicating a strong genetic relatedness between these genotypes. IR29(susceptible check) was singly separated. The haplotype analysis revealed that none of the 44 genotypes had a similar allele combination as FL478. These accessions are of interest since each genotype might be different from the classical salinity-tolerant Pokkali.
