Polymorphisms in the IFNl3/Il28B gene and hepatitis C: From adults to children

The purpose of the present review is to summarise the current knowledge on the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the interferon l3 (IFNl3) gene and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in children. Many studies in adults have demonstrated that genetic variation in IFNl3 is a strong predictor of the virological response in treatment-naive patients with HCV genotype 1 who were treated with Pegylated-IFN-α and ribavirin. Genetic variation in IFNl3 is also associated with the spontaneous clearance of HCV. Thus far, few paediatric studies have explored the association between variations in the IFNl3 gene and either spontaneous or treatment-induced clearance of HCV. The CC genotype of the rs12979860 SNP is associated with the spontaneous clearance of HCV in children independently of HCV genotype. Four paediatric studies have shown that both the CC genotype of the rs12979860 SNP and the TT genotype of the rs8099917 SNP are associated with the treatment-induced (IFN monotherapy and Pegylated-IFN-α and ribavirin association) clearance of HCV, while the rs12980275 SNP did not affect the virological response. The possible role of IFNl3 gene variation as a pre-treatment and on-treatment predictor of virological response in children is highly attractive but still undetermined. Further paediatric studies are needed to evaluate if testing for SNPs in IFNl3, either alone or together with other predictors of response to treatment, could be used to direct treatment strategies, including an avoidance of unnecessary protease inhibitor therapy and the duration of treatment.

Nosocomial infections affect implanted medical devices and greatly challenge their functional outcomes,becoming sometimes life threatening for the ***,aggressive antibiotic therapies are administered,which often require the use of last-resort drugs,if the infection is caused by multi-drug-resistant *** the risk of bacterial contamination of medical devices in the hospitals has thus become an emerging *** routes to control these infections are based on materials provided with intrinsic bactericidal properties(i.e.,chemical action)and on the design of surface coatings able to limit bacteria adhesion and fouling phenomena(i.e.,physical action),thus preventing bacterial biofilm ***,we report the development and validation of coatings made of layer-by-layer deposition of electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoro ethylene)P(VDF-TrFE)fibers with controlled orientations,which ultimately gave rise to antifouling *** obtained 10-layer surface morphology with 90°orientation fibers was able to efficiently prevent the adhesion of bacteria,by establishing a superhydrophobic-like behavior compatible with the Cassie-Baxter ***,the results highlighted that surface wettability and bacteria adhesion could be controlled using fibers with diameter comparable to bacteria size(i.e.,achievable via electrospinning process),by tuning the intra-fiber spacing,with relevant implications in the future design of biomedical surface coatings.

Short-Term Response of Soil Microbial Biomass to Different Chabazite Zeolite Amendments

Zeolitites (ZTs) are rocks containing more than 50% of zeolite minerals and are known to be a suitable material for agricultural purposes by improving soil physicochemical properties and nitrogen (N) use efficiency. However, little is known about their effects on soil microbial biomass. This study aimed to evaluate short-term effects of different chabazite-rich ZT (CHAZT) amendments on soil microbial biomass and activity. A silty-clay agricultural soil was amended in three different ways, including the addition of natural (5% and 15%) and NH_4^+-enriched (10%) CHAZT. Soil dissolved organic carbon (C), total dissolved N, NH_4^+, NO_3^-, NO_2^-, microbial biomass C and N, and ergosterol were measured periodically over 16 d in a laboratory incubation. To verify the microbial immobilization of the N derived from NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT, a high15N source was used for enriching the mineral to measure the microbial biomass δ15N signature. An increase in the ergosterol content was observed in the soil amended with 5% natural CHAZT. However, no similar result was observed in the soil amended with 15% natural CHAZT, suggesting that the fungal biomass was favored at a lower CHAZT application rate. In the soil amended with NH+ 4-enriched CHAZT, microbial biomass N was related to NO_3^-production over time and inversely related to NH_4^+, suggesting high nitrification process. Isotopic measurements on microbial biomass confirmed immediate assimilation of N derived from NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT. These results suggested that the NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT used in this study supplied an immediately available N pool to the microbial biomass.

The paper discusses the need of a high-level query language to allow analysts,geographers and,in general,non-programmers to easily cross-analyze multi-source VGI created by means of apps,crowd-sourced data from social networks and authoritative geo-referenced data,usually represented as JSON data sets(nowadays,the de facto standard for data exported by social networks).Since an easy to use high-level language for querying and manipulating collections of possibly geo-tagged JSON objects is still unavailable,we propose a truly declarative language,named J-CO-Ql,that is based on a well-defined execution model.A plug-in for a GIS permits to visualize geo-tagged data sets stored in a NoSQl database such as MongoDB;furthermore,the same plug-in can be used to write and execute J-CO-Ql queries on those *** paper introduces the language by exemplifying its operators within a real study case,the aim of which is to understand the mobility of people in the neighborhood of Bergamo ***-analysis of data about transportation networks and VGI from travelers is performed,by means of J-CO-Ql language,capable to manipulate and transform,combine and join possibly geo-tagged JSON objects,in order to produce new possibly geo-tagged JSON objects satisfying users’needs.

Impact of dietary l-arginine supply during early gestation on myofiber development in newborn pigs exposed to intra-uterine crowding

Background: Intra-uterine crowding(IUC) observed in hyperprolific sows impairs myofiber hyperplasia and overall fetal growth. Arginine supplementation(ARG) in gestation diets has been shown to positively affect litter and muscle development. The study objective was to assess whether the effect of ARG on offspring characteristics, with special emphasis on myofiber hyperplasia, differs under IUC conditions from these responses,because in that situation growth retardation is particularly prevalent due to reduced fetal nutrient *** oviduct ligation(Ol) was used as a model for an uncrowded and hyperprolificacy(IN) as a model for a crowded intra-uterine ***: Five Ol and five IN sows were fed a diet supplemented daily with either 43 g l-alanine(Ctrl) or 25 g l-arginine from d 14 to 28 of gestation in a cross-over design(two periods: 5^( th) and 6^( th) parity). Genetic variation in eggplant for Nitrogen Use Efficiency under contrasting NO3^- supply

Eggplant(Solanum melongena l.) yield is highly sensitive to N fertilization, the excessive use of which is responsible for environmental and human health *** N input together with the selection of improved Nitrogen-Use-Efficiency(NUE) genotypes, more able to uptake, utilize, and remobilize N available in soils, can be challenging to maintain high crop yields in a sustainable agriculture. The aim of this study was to explore the natural variation among eggplant accessions from different origins, in response to low(lN) and High(HN)Nitrate(NO3^-) supply, to identify NUE-contrasting genotypes and their NUE-related traits, in hydroponic and greenhouse pot experiments. Two eggplants, AM222 and AM22, were identified as N-use efficient and inefficient,respectively, in hydroponic, and these results were confirmed in a pot experiment, when crop yield was also evaluated. Overall, our results indicated the key role of Nutilization component(NUt E) to confer high NUE. The remobilization of N from leaves to fruits may be a strategy to enhance NUt E, suggesting glutamate synthase as a key enzyme. Further, omics technologies will be used for focusing on C-N metabolism interacting networks. The availability of RIls from two other selected NUE-contrasting genotypes will allow us to detect major genes/quantitative trait loci related to NUE.

We have read with interest the letter to the Editor by *** and Zhong,who presented the clinical data of 68 patients with Wilson’s disease(WD)who were admitted to the hospital before and during the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,and appreciated their findings on hepatic and some extrahepatic ***,given the strong impact of the pandemic on patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders,we would have expected a worsening of the psychiatric and/or neurological impairments in these *** contrast,according to the authors,these manifestations remained,somewhat unexpectedly,*** finding is in contrast with most of the current literature that highlights not only an increased incidence of mental health disorders in the general population but also an exacerbation of neurological and psychiatric symptoms in patients with chronic diseases,especially in those with pre-existing neuropsychiatric disorders,such as *** the study was mainly focused on the hepatic features of WD patients taking anti-copper treatment,a generic and cumulative definition of neurological and psychiatric manifestations,as in this study,does not allow for further *** studies during and after the pandemic are necessary to clarify the real impact,either direct or indirect,of the COVID-19 pandemic on the neurological and psychiatric symptoms of WD patients.
