Amphibians are thought to be highly susceptible to perturbed environments. However, recent studies show that many of them are successful inhabitants of disturbed, fragmented habitats. The source of this resilience is yet unclear, but it may be the byproduct of having a robust phenotype and/or the result of phenotypic plasticity. We then assessed the contribution of each by evaluating cytological features of two brain nuclei that modulate reproductive behavior and of the ovary, using female specimens of the frog Diaglena spatulata prospering in conserved and disturbed areas of a tropical dry forest. Our results in the brain show that the medial amygdala, but not the preoptic area, had a reduced size in frogs collected in disturbed forests compared to specimens collected in conserved forests. Both brain nuclei displayed, however, neurons with a reduced size in frogs captured in disturbed forest patches. In contrast, ovarian cytological features were similar between groups. Our preliminary results lead us to propose that Diaglena spatulata female specimens might combine robust ovary and plastic brain’s phenotypic traits to confront disturbed environments. This, however, is still a working hypothetical framework that needs to be experimentally confirmed.

Impact of Organic and Mineral Fertilization in Pecan Nut on Production,Quality and Antioxidant Capacity

The pecan nut is considered one of the most important dried fruits in the world by its classification as healthy food. The nutritional balance in the harvest is crucial for its impact on the production, quality and content of bioactive compounds. This research was carried out in the city of Aldama, Chihuahua (Mexico), where doses of mineral and organic fertilization were tested in L25 Taguchi structure with 6 factors and 5 levels by factor: nitrogen (N) 0 - 240 kg·ha-1, phosphate (P2O5) 0 - 120 kg·ha-1, potassium (K2O) 0 - 100 kg·ha-1, calcium (CaO) 0 - 400 kg·ha-1, liquid humus 0 - 3600 L·ha-1 and solid humus 0 - 8000 kg·ha-1. An average yield of 2.2 t·ha-1 was obtained;145 nuts per kilogram, 60% of the edible part of the nut. The total phenolic content was 225.9 mg gallic acid g-1 and the antioxidant capacity was 180.9 mg Trolox g-1. It is concluded that the factor with the greatest impact on yield, quality and antioxidant capacity in pecan nut was nitrogen. It was also found that the combination of mineral and organic fertilization helps to maintain the production and quality ranges of the nut. In turn, these factors contribute to the increase in the phenolic strength and antioxidant capacity. The optimal fertilization dosis to obtain the maximum levels in production of 3.2 t·ha-1;decrease the number of nuts per kilogram to 135, increase the percentage of the edible part of the nut to 61.8%, the increase in the total phenolic content to 318.6 mg of gallic acid g-1 and in the antioxidant capacity with 187.2 mg of Trolox g-1, was 184 kg·ha-1 of N, 107.4 kg·ha-1 of P2O5, 50 kg·ha-1 of K2O y 2777 L·ha-1 of liquid humus. Finally, the mineral fertilization complemented with organic fertilization is considered a good fertilization strategy for pecan trees and its possible benefits to health and the environment.

目的汉化健康问题解决量表并在2型糖尿病患者中验证其信效度。方法采用Brislin模式对健康问题解决量表进行翻译、回译及跨文化调适,形成中文版健康问题解决量表,并对262例2型糖尿病患者进行调查。通过专家咨询分析量表的内容效度,并通过Cronbach′sα系数、重测信度、折半信度验证健康问题解决量表的信度。通过与个人问题解决量表的相关性分析验证其效标关联效度,并同时采用探索性因子分析进行结构效度检验。结果形成的中文版健康问题解决量表共包括6个维度、30个条目。量表水平的内容效度指数为0.970,条目水平的内容效度指数0.830~1.000。效标关联效度为-0.675(P<0.05);探索性因子分析共提取6个公因子,累计方差贡献率为59.017%。量表Cronbach′sα系数为0.911,各维度Cronbach′sα系数为0.715~0.839;Spearman-Brown折半信度为0.764,重测信度为0.798。结论中文版健康问题解决量表具有良好的信效度,可用于2型糖尿病患者健康问题解决能力的评估。

Can CT Perfusion Guide Patient Selection for Treatment of Delayed Cerebral Ischemia?

Purpose: To evaluate qualitative and quantitative CT perfusion (CTP) for different treatment options of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) in aneurysmal SAH. Methods: Retrospective study of consecutive SAH patients enrolled in a prospective IRB-approved clinical trial. Qualitative analysis of CTP deficits were determined by two blinded neuroradiologists. Quantitative CTP was performed using standardized protocol with region-of-interest placement sampling the cortex. DCI was assessed by clinical and imaging criteria. Patients were classified into treatment groups: 1) hypertension-hemodilution-hypervolemia (HHH);2) intra-arterial (IA) vasodilators and/or angioplasty;3) no treatment. Mean quantitative CTP values were compared using ANOVA pairwise comparisons. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, standard error (SE) and optimal threshold values were calculated. Results: Ninety-six patients were classified into three treatment groups;21% (19/96) HHH, 34% (33/96) IA-therapy and 46% (44/96) no treatment. DCI was diagnosed in 42% (40/96);of which 18% (7/40) received HHH, 80% (32/40) IA-therapy, and 2% (1/40) no treatment. CTP deficits were seen in 50% (48/96);occurring in 63% (12/19) HHH, 94% (31/33) IA-therapy, and 11% (5/44) no treatment. Presence of CTP deficits had 83% sensitivity, 89% specificity, 90% positive predictive and 81% negative predictive values for treatment. Mean quantitative CTP values revealed significant differences in CBF (p mL/100 gm/min (89% specificity, 71% sensitivity) for determining treatment. Conclusion: These initial findings of significant differences in CTP deficits for different treatment groups suggest that CTP may have a potential role in guiding patient selection for treatment of DCI.

Isotopic Variations of Oxygen (δ^(18)O) in Benthic Foraminifera under Antiestuarine Conditions in the Colorado River Delta

Benthic foraminifera are excellent environmental indicators;CaCO3 test records the isotopic concentration of their surroundings and can be used to analyze environmental changes that occur during a certain time period. Stable isotopes, particularly those of oxygen (δ18O), are useful for interpreting ancient environments, given that they are used as “proxy” environmental variables (temperature and salinity). In this study, we provide ranges of isotopic variation in benthic foraminifera communities from the Colorado River delta. Four sampling campaigns were conducted in one year (2009-2010) in the adjacent subtidal zone of Baja California. Four transects with a total of sixteen sample station were drawn perpendicular to the coastline. Here, we recorded the following in situ: sand-type, salinity, and temperature. In the laboratory, 300 individuals per sample were separated, and sub-samples were taken for isotopic analysis. Data was processed using the software’s R 2.12.2, PAST 1.81 and Arc Map 9.3. Forty species were identified in the dead assemblages (Thanatocoenosis), whereas thirteen species were found in the living assemblages (Biocoenosis). The most abundant species in both communities belong to the genera Ammonia and Cribroelphidium. In the living assemblages, isotopic variation −2.15% to 5.94% within a temperature interval of 11°C, indicated antiestuarine conditions. In the dead assemblages, isotopic composition −3.04 to −0.74 served as a sign of estuarine conditions prior to damming.

The use of hearing aids (HA) is considered a predisposing factor for ear microbial infections. We undertook this study to compare the presence and nature of the microbial flora inhabiting of ears of HA and non-HA (nHA) users. Swab samples of the ears of HA and nHA users were collected from the Institute of Otolaryngology, “Cattolica del Sacro Cuore” University “Agostino Gemelli”, Rome, Italy. Swab samples were taken from the ear canal of 57 HA and 33 nHA users. The components of the microbial flora present on each swab sample were identified and characterized at the level of species. A total of 41 different bacterial species were identified. A statistically significant prevalence of polymicrobial communities was found in ears presenting signs of inflammation (2.5 ± 1.7 vs 2.1 ± 1.3;P = 0.02) and in HA users (2.3 ± 1.2 vs 1.7 ± 1.0;P = 0.002). Few putative pathogens were detected. Candida albicans spp. was not isolated in our study. A small number of swab samples presented no microbial growth. Bacterial species isolated from HA users with and without inflammation were assayed for the ability to form biofilm. Among gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, S. aureus, CoNS, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae were found to be strong biofilm producers. S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, isolated only from the ears of HA and nHA users presenting signs of inflammation, were further analyzed for their antibiotic-resistance profile and characterized by the Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) assay. The highest rates of antibacterial resistance were in S. aureus to penicillin (75.5%) and in P. aeruginosa, to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, cefotaxime, ertapenem, tigecycline and trime-thoprim-sulfamethoxazole (100%). Moreover, three S. aureus strains (37.5%) were methicillin-resistant (MRSA). Of the eight S. aureus isolates, we identified six sequence types (ST) indicating that 75% are likely independent clones.
