Rapid identification and characterization of Listeria monocytogenes are required for the food industry, epidemiological studies, and disease prevention and control. However, typing procedures are labor-intensive and time-consuming, and they require technical expertise, a panel of sera and reference culture strains or sophisticated and expensive equipment. To improve upon traditional diagnostic methods for L. monocytogenes we developed and evaluated an efficient procedure for the specific identification of L. monocytogenes and the major pathogenic serotypes of the species based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Four individual reactions were designed using primers targeting any L. monocytogenes serotypes (LAMP-AS) and the 1/2a (LAMP-1/2a), 1/2b (LAMP-1/2b), and 4b (LAMP-4b) serotypes. The procedure distinguished L. monocytogenes from closely genetically related species and the targeted serotypes. Cross-reactivity with a few rare serotypes isolated from food or clinical samples did not impair the usefulness of the procedure. Thus, our approach constitutes a fast, easy and low-cost alternative for L. monocytogenes diagnosis and serotyping and may be useful for surveillance and epidemiological investigation programs.

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIP) is an infre-quent complication of an active systemic lupus erythema-tosus (SLE). We illustrate a case of SLE inactive-related CIP. A 51-year old female with inactive SLE (ECLAM score 2) was hospitalized with postprandial fullness, vomiting, abdominal bloating and abdominal pain. She had had no bowel movements for five days. Plain abdominal X-ray revealed multiple fluid levels and dilated small and large bowel loops with air-fluid levels. Intestinal contrast radiology detected dilated loops. CIP was diagnosed. The patient was treated with prokinetics, octreotide, claritromycin, rifaximin, azathioprine and tegaserod without any clinical improvement. Then methylprednisolone (500 mg iv daily) was started. After the first administration, the patient showed peristaltic movements. A bowel movement was reported after the second administration. A plain abdominal X-ray revealed no air-fluid levels. Steroid therapy was slowly reduced with complete resolution of the symptoms. The patient is still in a good clinical condition. SLE-related CIP is generally reported as a complication of an active disease. In our case, CIP was the only clinical demonstration of the SLE.

Byrsonima intermedia A Juss. is a species with pharmacological properties from the Brazilian Cerrado that shows difficulties related to sexual propagation. Research on cell viability may provide useful information for the selection of cells with embryogenic potential during the callus culture, Within this context, our research is aimed at establishing the cell viability of calli from Byrsonima intermedia leaf segments. The calli went through three subculture phases, of 60 days each, in MS medium with 0.09 M sucrose, 0.6% agar, pH 5.8 and 4.52 laM 2,4-D. The calli were stored in dark conditions and samples were collected every 10 days from each subculture for viability tests with fluorescein 3,6-diacetate （FDA） and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride （TTC）. The staining methods allowed quantifying cell viability in each subculture. The best results from the FDA tests were obtained at 21, 25 and 29 days for the first, second and third subcultures respectively, with 53,86%, 61.88% and 53.73% viable cells. Regarding the TTC test, the largest absorbance values were obtained at 21, 27 and 28 days for the first, second and third subcultures respectively. Fluorescence and spectrophotometry analyses were efficient for determination of cell viability during callus cultivation period.

The sodium and glucose co-transporter inhibitors type 2 (SGLT2) comprises a new class of hypoglycemic drugs to control type 2 diabetes mellitus, in an attempt to add new non-existing benefits to the so far arising classes. Regarding this new class of drugs, represented by dapaglifozin, canaglifozin and empaglifozin, it is important to highlight the benefits brought by these medications to combat hyperglycemia with insulin-independent mechanisms that are beyond glucose reduction, such as cardiovascular events prevention, reduction in HbA1c, weight loss and blood pressure lowering. Recently, a relevant study (Empa-Reg) brought hope and set the spotlight on the prevention of cardiac events among diabetic patients, which is the main cause of mortality within this group. However, despite coming out as a good treatment option, SGLT2 inhibitors are under constant clinical research and, as a new drug, it should be carefully carried out regarding the long-term effects of glycosuria and other possible side effects, such as the observed increase in the incidence of bladder, breast cancer and bone fractures, which require further studies. Therefore, these compounds might represent a landmark approach for the treatment of diabetes.

Genetic Divergence in Mango and Obtaining Minimum Efficient Descriptors

Mangifera indica (mango) is a typically tropical fruit with considerable economic value. Brazil features a wide variety of cultivars of this fruit, most of which are known under several different names. Indeed, the nomenclature of mango varieties is still quite confusing. Up to now there has been no well-defined scientific principle to differentiate them. The objective of the present work is to compare the different clustering methods in assessing genetic divergence among mango accessions, as well as identify the minimum efficient descriptors for that crop. A total of 20 mango accessions in Cáceres, Mato Grosso state, Brazil were evaluated. When building dissimilarity matrices, the descriptors were divided according to the following groups: leaf, flower/inflorescence, fruit, seed and growth habit/ripening period. With these divisions, combinations were performed among the groups of descriptors. The similarity index was used to obtain the dissimilarity matrices. Later, the accessions were clustered using the methods of Tocher, Ward and UPGMA. The study observed that it was possible to reduce the number of descriptors from 64 to 35, and that the clustering methods were compatible with the study of the genetic diversity of mango.

In the scenery of the oil industry, the remaining resources associated with light oils have an increasingly smaller share in the natural energy resources available to man, and in return the importance of resources associated with heavy oils has increased significantly. One of the drawbacks of this type of oil is associated with its low mobility due to the high viscosity in reservoir conditions, making the transport in pipelines very difficult, especially through pumping methods that require high powers. Thus, the development of new techniques and optimization of some existing technologies, aiming at the commercial use of heavy oil accumulations plays an important role. A viable technique that has been used is the core annular flow, in which small amounts of water are injected close to the pipe wall, lubricating the oil core, reducing friction and decreasing the pressure drop during the flow. In this sense, this work aims to perform, numerically, an energetic and hydrodynamic analysis of a heavy oil-water two-phase flow, using the core-flow technique, in curved pipes, in the Ansys CFX software. Results of the velocity, pressure, and volume fraction distribution of the involved phases are presented and analyzed. It was observed that the proposed mathematical model was able to accurately represent the analyzed phenomena and that a reduction factor in the pressure drop of 28.4 was obtained as compared to the heavy oil single-phase flow.

Objective:To investigate the in vitro antimicrobial potential of extracts of stem,leaves,flowers,pods and seeds of Moringu okifera(***) against Vibrio *** hatchery water and the prawn Mmrobrachium ***:The ethanol extracts of stem,leaves,pods and seeds and chloroform extract of flowers of *** were tested against Vibrio cholerue(***) serogroups non-O1/non-O139(n=4).Vibrio vulnificus(n=l) and Vibrio mimicus(n=1).Escherichia coli(***)(ATCC(?) 25922) was used as quality *** species were obtained from Macmbrachium amazonicum prawns and from hatchery water from prawn *** Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) was determined by broth microdilution ***:The best result was obtained with the ethanol extract of pods,which inhibited three strains of the ***,Vibrio vulnificus,Vibrio minimis and ***(MIC range 0.312-5.000 mg/mL).The chloroform extract of flowers was effective against all *** strains and ***(MIC range 0.625-1.250 mg/mL).However,the ethanol extracts of stem and seeds showed low effectiveness in inhibiting the bacterial ***:The extracts of pods,flowers and leaves of *** have potential for the control of Vibrio *** studies are necessary to isolate the bioaetive compounds responsible for this antimicrobial activity.

Objective:To determine the pi'evalence of vector-bome bacteria and protozoa in hunting dogs living in Central ***:Molecular testing was executed on DNA which was extracted from blood specimens collected from 117 asymptomatic dogs to detect Anaplasma phagocytophilum,Babesia canis(***),Bartonella spp..Coxiella burnetii(***).Ehrlichia *** *** Leislnnania ***:A total of 48 dogs(41.0%) were infested by Ixodes ricinus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus ***-borne infections were observed in 64(54.7%) *** in detail.38 dogs(32.5%) screened positive for Hepatozoon canis,24(20.5%) for Bartonella rinsonii ***.20(17.1%) for Leishmania infantum,6(5.1%) for ***,5(4.3%) for ***(3 *** vogeli and 2 *** canis),3(2.5%) for Anaplasma phagocytophilum,and 2(1.7%) for Ehrlichia *** infection by 2 agents occurred in 17(14.5%) subjects,by 3 agents in 7(6.0%) dogs,and by 4 agents in 1(0.9%) ***:The results demonstrated that several vector-borne pathogens were circulating in this region and dogs infected by these agents were usually asymptomatic.A relevant finding was the presence of DNA of ***,a severe zoonotic agent,in the 5.1% of tested dogs,which can be source of infection for their owners not only through tick bites,but also directly with urine,feces and birth products.

Objective:To investigate the isolation of enterobacteria associated with Macrobrachium amazonicum(***) farming and evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of Vibrio ***:Strains were isolated from female *** prawns and environmental and hatchery *** assays were used to identify bacterial genera and those belonging to the genus Vibrio were submitted to further analyses for species identification,through Vitek 2 automated system and *** test was performed according to Clinical Laboratory Standards ***:The following genera of enlerobacteria were recovered:Enterobacter(n=11),Citrobacter(n=10),Proteus(n=2),Serratia(n=2),Kluyvera(n=2),Providencia(n=2),Cedecea(n=1),Escherichia(n=1).Edwardsiella(n=1) and BulliauxeUa(n=1).As for Vibrio,three species were identified:Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139(n=4).Vibrio vulnificus(***)(n=1) and Vibrio mimicus(n=1).Vibrio *** minimum inhibitory concentrations values within the susceptibility range established by Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute for almost all antibiotics,except for ***,which presented intermediate profile to ***:Enterobacteria do not seem to be the most important pathogens associated with *** farming,whereas the recovery of Vibrio *** larviculture,with emphasis on Vibrio cholerae and ***,deserves special attention due to their role as potentially zoonotic aquaculture-associated ***,the intermediate susceptibility of *** to ampicillin reflects the importance of monitoring drug use in prawn farming.
