Glass-like carbon(GC)is a nongraphitizing material composed entirely of carbon atoms produced from selected organic polymer resins by controlled pyrolysis in an inert *** GC properties are a combination of the properties of glass,ceramic,and graphite,including hardness,low density,low thermal conductivity,high chemical inertness,biocompatibility,high electrical conductivity,and microfabrication process *** these unique properties,the application of GC in mechanical sensors has not been explored thus ***,we investigate the electrical,structural,and chemical properties of GC thin films derived from epoxy-based negative photoresist SU-8 pyrolyzed from 700 to 900°*** addition,we fabricated microGC piezoresistors pyrolyzed at 700 and 900°C and integrated them into nonpyrolyzed SU-8 cantilevers to create microelectromechanical systems(MEMS)mechanical *** sensitivities of the GC sensor to strain,force,surface stress,and acceleration are characterized to demonstrate their potential and limits for electromechanical microdevices.

Housing in informal settlements often lacks construction techniques that adopt criteria of resilience to natural *** are rapidly diffusing in economically developing *** aim of this study was to assess the current use of smartphones by the masons of the informal settlements of Iringa,Tanzania,and to identify pathways for improving their construction *** were collected through a mixed method approach that includes in-depth interviews,surveys,and a focus group with *** results reveal that only a few masons received formal training,most of them have never interacted with a qualified engineer nor consulted trained professionals when *** masons own a smartphone and they extensively use it to gather technical information from the web,transfer money through mobile payments,share images of construction details,and promote their work on social *** broad use of smartphones shows potential for enhancing construction *** article presents a unique analysis of the use of smartphones in the construction of informal settlements in Tanzania,which could be extended to other *** on the findings,new strategies are proposed to engage with local stakeholders and foster the exchange of technical knowledge for safer settlements via smartphones.

In a number of animal species,individuals differ in their ability to solve cognitive ***,the mechanisms underlying this variability remain *** has been proposed that individual differences in cognition may be related to individual differences in behavior(i.e.,personality);a hypothesis that has received mixed *** this study,we investigated whether personality correlates with the cognitive ability that allows inhibiting behavior in 2 teleost fish species,the zebrafish Danio rerio and the guppy Poecilia *** both species,individuals that were bolder in a standard personality assay,the open-field test,showed greater inhibitory abilities in the tube task,which required them to inhibit foraging behavior toward live prey sealed into a transparent *** finding reveals a relationship between boldness and inhibitory abilities in fish and lends support to the hypothesis of a link between personality and ***,this study suggests that species separated by a relatively large phylogenetic distance may show the same link between personality and cognition,when tested on the same tasks.

One of the major concerns for the prescription of medications containing testosterone(T)in the aging men with T deficiency(TD)is prostate disorders(such as benign prostatic hyperplasia,BPH)and their related symptoms(lower urinary tract symptoms,LUTS).This is because prostate is an androgen-responsive gland;however,the androgen dependence of prostate growth,well demonstrated in earlier phases of life,has no clear evidence in late adulthood and *** fact,after the age of 40 years,BPH becomes increasingly more *** the other hand,in men older than 40 year,a progressive decline in T is *** epidemiological data are a starting point for questioning a putative detrimental role of T on the prostate health in the ageing man.

Understanding the quantum dynamics of spin defects and their coherence properties requires an accurate modeling of spinspin interaction in solids and molecules,for example by using spin Hamiltonians with parameters obtained from first principles *** present a real-space approach based on density functional theory for the calculation of spin-Hamiltonian parameters,where only selected atoms are treated at the all-electron level,while the rest of the system is described with the pseudopotential *** approach permits calculations for systems containing more than 1000 atoms,as demonstrated for defects in diamond and silicon *** show that only a small number of atoms surrounding the defect needs to be treated at the all-electron level,in order to obtain an overall all-electron accuracy for hyperfine and zero-field splitting *** also present results for coherence times,computed with the cluster correlation expansion method,highlighting the importance of accurate spin-Hamiltonian parameters for quantitative predictions of spin dynamics.

Klinefelter syndrome(KS),described for the first time in 1942,is the most common chromosome aneuploidy in men,affecting from 1/500 to 1/1000 newborn males,and it frequently causes *** the majority of cases,KS patients present a nonmosaic karyotype 47,XXY or a mosaic 47,XXY/46,XY karyotipe.1 KS is characterized usually by gynecomastia,small testes,and alteration of germinal epithelium and Sertoli cell.

The business judgment rule （B JR） is a U.S. corporate law concept that has gained international recognition. It has been moulded, particularly in the definition of the Delaware courts, to protect the managerial business discretion, in other words to protect directors＂ decisions from judicial review. Corporate social responsibility （CSR） questions the relationship between corporation with a business purpose and society. More and more attention is drawn to the various impacts of corporate decisions on society, asking for the necessity for directors to take these impacts into consideration when making business decisions. At the centre of CSR and the BJR are the fiduciary duties of the directors --the duty of diligence and the duty of care --and the question as to if the directors have breached their duties and if they have fulfilled them in a CSR compatible manner. This paper discusses how the B JR helps promoting CSR by discussing the advantages and disadvantages （real or apparenO of the B JR with respect to CSR.

Diabetes mellitus(DM),the 10th leading cause of death worldwide,is a major and growing public health problem estimated to affect more than 578 million people in 2030 and 700 million people in 2045[1].In diabetic animals,protein glycation and glucose autoxidation generate free radicals,which cause lipid ***,reactive oxygen species(ROS)can quickly accumulate,decrease antioxidant activity,and cause deterioration of kidney and liver function.A disrupted redox balance in cells also damages crucial biomolecules such as deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA),proteins and *** stress(OS)is elevated in diabetes mellitus and may be a major factor in the development and evolution of the typical long-term pathophysiology of diabetes and its associated complications[2].
