A multi-stage triaxial testing procedure for low permeable geomaterials applied to Opalinus Clay

In many engineering applications,it is important to determine both effective rock properties and the rock behavior which are representative for the problem’s in situ *** this purpose,rock samples are usually extracted from the ground and brought to the laboratory to perform laboratory experiments such as consolidated undrained(CU)triaxial *** low permeable geomaterials such as clay shales,core extraction,handling,storage,and specimen preparation can lead to a reduction in the degree of saturation and the effective stress state in the specimen prior to testing remains *** changes in structure and the effect of capillary pressure can alter the properties of the specimen and affect the reliability of the test results.A careful testing procedure including back-saturation,consolidation and adequate shearing of the specimen,however,can overcome these *** substantial effort has been devoted during the past decades to the establishment of a testing procedure for low permeable geomaterials,no consistent protocol can be *** a special focus on CU tests on Opalinus Clay,this study gives a review of the theoretical concepts necessary for planning and validating the results during the individual testing stages(saturation,consolidation,and shearing).The discussed tests protocol is further applied to a series of specimens of Opalinus Clay to illustrate its applicability and highlight the key aspects.

How believable are published laboratory data?A deeper look into system-compliance and elastic modulus

Elastic modulus(E)interpretation is debatable with limited literature detailing the impact of *** address this impact,a comprehensive testing schedule using an aluminium 6061(Al)sample is carried out on several systems under various test *** is chosen as it is extruded and adheres to well defined shape tolerances and elastic properties.A robust method,using the Savitzky-Golay filter,is introduced to identify significant slope changes in the stressestrain *** the load in the test system is well defined,the recorded deformation is corrected to the expected value of Al resulting in a system-compliance *** results across the testing systems and test setups showed significant variance,with the recorded E always lower than the anticipated *** number of components within the system over which the deformation is measured had the most significant impact,lowering the expected E by up to 50%.Additionally,the system-compliance factor is inconsistent across different systems and ***,it is evidently proved that each setup must be separately evaluated for its system-compliance and that no single value exists across systems and *** findings are then projected onto a series of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)tests carried out on Stanstead granite(SS GR)*** corrected Et50 and Eavg values for system-compliance of the samples are within1%for each system as opposed to being50%*** findings conclude that it is deemed necessary and of utmost importance that the deformation be corrected to accommodate the systemcompliance to obtain reliable results.

Predictive factors for anastomotic leakage after laparoscopic colorectal surgery

Every colorectal surgeon during his or her career is faced with anastomotic leakage(AL); one of the most dreaded complications following any type of gastrointestinal anastomosis due to increased risk of morbidity, mortality, overall impact on functional and oncologic outcome and drainage on hospital resources. In order to understand and give an overview of the AL risk factors in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, we carried out a careful review of the existing literature on this topic and found several different definitions of AL which leads us to believe that the lack of a consensual, standard definition can partly explain the considerable variations in reported rates of AL in clinical studies. Colorectal leak rates have been found to vary depending on the anatomic location of the anastomosis with reported incidence rates ranging from 0 to 20%, while the laparoscopic approach to colorectal resections has not yet been associated with a significant reduction in AL incidence. As well, numerous risk factors, though identified, lack unanimous recognition amongst researchers. For example, the majority of papers describe the risk factors for left-sided anastomosis, the principal risk being male sex and lower anastomosis, while little data exists defining AL risk factors in a right colectomy. Also, gut microbioma is gaining an emerging role as potential risk factor for leakage.

A statistical reappraisal of the relationship between liquid limit and specific surface area, cation exchange capacity and activity of clays

more than 500 datasets from the literature have been used to evaluate the relationships of specific surface area (SSA),cation exchange capacity (CEC) and activity versus the liquid limit (LL).The correlations gave R^2 values ranging between 0.71 and *** data were also used to validate the *** SSA values slightly overestimate the measured SSA up to 100 m^2/*** the estimated CEC values,they overestimated the measured CEC values up to 20 meq/(100 g).A probabilistic approach was performed for the correlations of SSA,CEC and activity versus *** analysis shows that the relations of SSA,CEC and activity with LL are *** the LL values,it is possible to assess other basic engineering properties of clays.

Experiments on the effect of inflow and outflow sequences on suspended sediment exchange rates

In laboratory experiments,the influence of inflow and outflow sequences on the behavior of fine sediment was *** experimental set-up consisted of two interconnected rectangular basins,between which water was moved back and *** sediment concentration in the main basin as well as the sediment exchange rates were derived from turbidity *** suspended sediment ratio,SSR,and sediment exchange rates(influx sediment rate,ISR,and evacuated sediment rate,ESR) were *** twenty test runs,a parametric study on the magnitude and frequency of inflow and outflow cycles,the relative duration between inflow and outflow sequences,the initial sediment concentration,and the intake position was *** initial test with stagnant water described the settling behavior of fine sediment and served as a reference *** test results show that settling of fine particles near the intake/outlet structure can be considerably reduced by the nature of the inflow and outflow *** cycle magnitude and frequency lead to maximum suspended sediment ratio in the *** low discharges,the evolution of suspended sediment concentration cannot be directly correlated to the inflow and outflow ***,compared to "no operation" conditions,the suspended sediment ratio could be increased by 10% to 40%*** high discharge,the evolution of suspended sediment concentration correlated with discharge cycles and suspended sediment ratios between 50% and 80%higher than for stagnant water could be *** ratios could be obtained when the intake is located closer to the bottom or to the free water ***,the overall sediment balance remained in equilibrium over the test period,indicating that the influx and evacuated sediment rates are not significantly influenced by the inflow and outflow cycles.

Habitat, occurrence and conservation status of the Saharo-macaronesian and Southern-mediterranean element Fagonia cretica L. (Zygophyllaceae) in Italy

Fagonia cretica L. is an important component of mediterranean dry grasslands and a rare and isolated species of Italian flora. In this study, an assessment is presented on the distribution, habitat, and conservation status of F. cretica in Italy. The results of field investigation and herbarium analysis show that this species grows in a small area within the southern Calabria region characterized by a warmest and driest mediterranean climate on the Italian peninsula. F. cretica is a semi-desert plant species growing in Italy in only one peripheral and isolated population at the northern limit of its distribution. Plant community analysis, using the phytosociological method, shows that F. cretica grows in wintergreen perennial dry grasslands dominated by Lygeum {partum and Hyparrhenia hirta. F. crelica plant communities are located in thermo-xeric habits such as south-, southeast- and east-facing slopes on clays and sandy clays in southern Calabria. The population of F. cretica is fragmented in six neighbouring localities, with two of which belonging to a Site of Community Importance （SC1）. The conservation status of F. cretica population is not very good, and is defined as ＂Critically Endangered＂ in accordance with IUCN criteria. There are many threats affecting the F. crelica population in ltaly, primarily the changes in land uses due to urban expansion and reforestation with exotic plants. The southern end of the Italian peninsula hosts other plants from thermo-xeric habits that do not adapt to the current local climate. This territory can be considered as a microrefugia for plants currently distributed in the arid territory of the southern mediterranean. These results contribute to the discussion of some conservation measures, and the possibility of establishing a micro-reserve. For all these reasons, we propose to include F. cretica in the lists of protected plant species at regional （Calabria） and country （Italy） scales in Italy.

multiple sequence alignments are successfully applied in many studies for understanding the structural and functional relations among single nucleic acids and protein sequences as well as whole families. Because of the rapid growth of sequence databases, multiple sequence alignments can often be very large and difficult to visualize and analyze. We offer a new service aimed to visualize and analyze the multiple alignments obtained with different external algorithms, with new features useful for the comparison of the aligned sequences as well as for the creation of a final image of the alignment. Second Order multigrid methods for Elliptic Problems with Discontinuous Coefficients on an Arbitrary Interface, I: One Dimensional Problems

In this paper we present a one dimensional second order accurate method to solve Elliptic equations with discontinuous coefficients on an arbitrary *** order accuracy for the first derivative is obtained as *** method is based on the Ghost Fluid method,making use of ghost points on which the value is defined by suitable interface *** multi-domain formulation is adopted,where the problem is split in two sub-problems and interface conditions will be enforced to close the *** conditions are relaxed together with the internal equations(following the approach proposed in[10]in the case of smooth coefficients),leading to an iterative method on all the set of grid values(inside points and ghost points).A multigrid approach with a suitable definition of the restriction operator is *** restriction of the defect is performed separately for both sub-problems,providing a convergence factor close to the one measured in the case of smooth coefficient and independent on the magnitude of the jump in the *** tests will confirm the second order *** the method is proposed in one dimension,the extension in higher dimension is currently underway[12]and it will be carried out by combining the discretization of[10]with the multigrid approach of[11]for Elliptic problems with non-eliminated boundary conditions in arbitrary domain.
