From December 31st,2019,a novel highly pathogenic coronavirus,severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),has spread worldwide,reaching at present the dimension of a pandemic.In addition to damaging the lungs,SARS-CoV-2 may also damage the heart and this is corroborated by the evidence that cardiovascular comorbidities are associated with a higher mortality and poor clinical outcomes in patient infected by the virus.During the infection myocardial injury,myocarditis and arrhythmias have also been reported,but the pathophysiological mechanisms of these complications are yet to be understood.Great attention is also being posed on the potential beneficial/harmful role of angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE)inhibitors,as far as the virus binds to ACE2 to infect cells,but evidences lack.Furthermore,SARS-CoV-2 can also affect the aspect of acute coronary syndromes,not only because these two distinct pathological entities share pathogenic aspects(such as the systemic inflammatory state and cytokine release),but also and above all for the consequences that the need to contain the infection has on the management of cardiological urgencies.The aim of this review was therefore to summarize the relationship between the virus and the cardiovascular system.

Neurons are energy-demanding cells.Disruptions in energy metabolism can quickly interrupt neuronal function,leading to cell death and neurodegeneration.For instance,ischemia rapidly depletes adenosine triphosphate(ATP)thereby disrupting energy-dependent cellular processes crucial for homeostasis,and axon degeneration is preceded by a collapse of axonal ATP levels.

Autograft or metal implants are routinely used in skeletal repair.However,they fail to provide long-term clinical resolution,necessitating a functional biomimetic tissue engineering alternative.The use of native human bone tissue for synthesizing a biomimeticmaterial inkfor three-dimensional(3D)bioprintingof skeletal tissueis anattractivestrategyfor tissueregeneration.Thus,human bone extracellular matrix(bone-ECM)offers an exciting potential for the development of an appropriate microenvironment for human bone marrow stromal cells(HBMSCs)to proliferate and differentiate along the osteogenic lineage.In this study,we engineered a novel material ink(LAB)by blending human bone-ECM(B)with nanoclay(L,Laponite®)and alginate(A)polymers using extrusion-based deposition.The inclusion of the nanoﬁller and polymeric material increased the rheology,printability,and drug retention properties and,critically,the preservation of HBMSCs viability upon printing.The composite of human bone-ECM-based 3D constructs containing vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)enhanced vascularization after implantation in an ex vivo chick chorioallantoic membrane(CAM)model.The inclusion of bone morphogenetic protein-2(BMP-2)with the HBMSCs further enhanced vascularization and mineralization after only seven days.This study demonstrates the synergistic combination of nanoclay with biomimetic materials(alginate and bone-ECM)to support the formation of osteogenic tissue both in vitro and ex vivo and offers a promising novel 3D bioprinting approach to personalized skeletal tissue repair.

The differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases is complex and relies on clinical assessment,biomarker levels in cerebrospinal fluid,neuroimaging and neuropsychological assessment.The efforts of the scientific community are focused on two aspects:a)the discovery of minimally invasive biomarkers;b)the discovery of early biomarkers that can predict the progression to clinical disease in the presymptomatic stage of a disease.Considering the impact of the number of patients affected by chronic neurodegenerative diseases on public health expenditures,early diagnosis seems to be a primary need of our society.

The use of anticoagulation therapy could prove to be controversial when trying to balance ischemic stroke and intracranial bleeding risks in patients with concurrent cerebral amyloid angiopathy(CAA)and atrial fibrillation(AF).In fact,CAA is an age-related cerebral vasculopathy that predisposes patients to intracerebral hemorrhage.Nevertheless,many AF patients require oral systemic dose-adjusted warfarin,direct oral anticoagulants(such as factor Xa inhibitors)or direct thrombin inhibitors to control often associated with cardioembolic stroke risk.The prevalence of both CAA and AF is expected to rise,due to the aging of the population.This clinical dilemma is becoming increasingly common.In patients with coexisting AF and CAA,the risks/benefits profile of anticoagulant therapy must be assessed for each patient individually due to the lack of a clear-cut consensus with regard to its risks in scientific literature.This review aims to provide an overview of the management of patients with concomitant AF and CAA and proposes the implementation of a risk-based decision-making algorithm.

Recent advances in coupling light-harvesting microorganisms with electronic components have led to a new generation of biohybrid devices based on microbial photocatalysts.These devices are limited by the poorly conductive interface between phototrophs and synthetic materials that inhibit charge transfer.This study focuses on overcoming this bottleneck through the metabolically-driven encapsulation of photosynthetic cells with a bio-inspired conductive polymer.Cells of the purple non sulfur bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides were coated with a polydopamine(PDA)nanoparticle layer via the self-polymerization of dopamine under anaerobic conditions.The treated cells show preserved light absorption of the photosynthetic pigments in the presence of dopamine concentrations ranging between 0.05–3.5 mM.The thickness and nanoparticle formation of the membrane-associated PDA matrix were further shown to vary with the dopamine concentrations in this range.Compared to uncoated cells,the encapsulated cells show up to a 20-fold enhancement in transient photocurrent measurements under mediatorless conditions.The biologically synthesized PDA can thus act as a matrix for electronically coupling the light-harvesting metabolisms of cells with conductive surfaces.

The detection of orbital angular momentum usually relies on optical techniques,which modify the original beam to convert the information carried on its phase into a specific intensity distribution in output.Moreover,the exploitation of high-intensity beams can result destructive for standard optical elements and setups.A recent publication suggests a solution to overcome all those limitations,by probing highly-intense vortex pulses with a structured reference beam in a strong-field photoionization process.

Typically, the unambiguous determination of the quantum numbers of nuclear states is a challenging task. Recently, it has been proposed to utilize to this aim vortex photons in the MeV energy region and, potentially, this could revolutionize nuclear spectroscopy because of the new and enhanced selectivity of this probe. Moreover, nuclei may become diagnostic tools for vortex photons. Still, some open questions have to be dealt with.Nuclei exhibit intricate excitation spectra. Indeed, not all states within these spectra are equally significant. Some are not sensitive to specific terms in the nuclear Hamiltonian or do not display novel features, so that investigating them is not helpful to enhance our overall understanding of nuclear structure. On the other hand, there are states that manifest themselves as prominent peaks, e.g., in the inelastic scattering spectra. Among the best examples are the so-called Giant Resonances that lie at energies of the order of tens of MeV [1].

A recent application of a simple,all-dry,abrasive transfer of 2D materials on paper demonstrates the potential of two-dimensional tungsten disulfide(WS_(2))as the sensitive material of a flexible photoconductive detector.The devices show really good responsivity over a bandwidth spanning from near infrared to ultraviolet and could open new avenues towards disposable optoelectronics systems.

Location-Based Services(LBSs)are essential in many application contexts like ride-sharing or navigation apps.There are cases where users could gain an advantage by submitting fake locations.The problem faced in this paper concerns the possibility that the geographic location declared by a user is not the actual location in which the user is placed.Some solutions are based on centralized or distributed verification in the literature,and other solutions are based on witnesses or infrastructure.In this paper,we highlight the limitations of such approaches and propose a new scheme that exploits signals coming from satellites to provide trustworthy location proofs,also respecting users'privacy.The proposed approach is decentralized because location proofs are stored by users in a suitably-encrypted way,and a blockchain is adopted to guarantee data integrity and authenticity.We show that the proposed approach overcomes the state of the art through a detailed analysis.
