Protective Roles of Shilajit in Modulating Resistin,Adiponectin,and Cytokines in Rats with Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Objective:To evaluate the effect of Shilajit,a medicine of Ayurveda,on the serum changes in cytokines and adipokines caused by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).Methods:After establishing fatty liver models by feeding a high-fat diet(HFD)for 12 weeks,35 Wistar male rats were randomly divided into5 groups,including control(standard diet),Veh(HFD+vehicle),high-dose Shilajit[H-Sh,HFD+250 mg/(kg·d)Shilajit],low-dose Shilajit[L-Sh,HFD+150 mg/(kg·d)Shilajit],and pioglitazone[HFD+10 mg/(kg·d)pioglitazone]groups,7 rats in each group.After 2-week of gavage administration,serum levels of glucose,insulin,interleukin1 beta(IL-1β),IL-6,IL-10,tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),adiponectin,and resistin were measured,and insulin resistance index(HOMA-IR)was calculated.Results:After NAFLD induction,the serum level of IL-10 significantly increased and serum IL-1β,TNF-αlevels significantly decreased by injection of both doses of Shilajit and pioglitazone(P<0.05).Increases in serum glucose level and homeostasis model of HOMA-IR were reduced by L-Sh and H-Sh treatment in NAFLD rats(P<0.05).Both doses of Shilajit increased adiponectin and decreased serum resistin levels(P<0.05).Conclusion:The probable protective role of Shilajit in NAFLD model rats may be via modulating the serum levels of IL-1β,TNF-α,IL-10,adipokine and resistin,and reducing of HOMA-IR.

Synthesis of boron nitride nanorod and its performance as a metalfree catalyst for oxidative desulfurization of diesel fuel

In order to reduce the sulfur compounds in diesel fuel,boron nitride(BN)has been used as a novel metal efree catalyst in the present research.This nanocatalyst was synthesized via template-free approach followed by heating treatment at 900℃in nitrogen atmosphere that the characteristics of the sample were identified by the X-ray diffraction,Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy,Raman spectroscopy,field emission scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy,atomic force microscopy,and N2 adsorptionedesorption isotherms.The results of structural and morphological analysis represented that BN has been successfully synthesized.The efficacy of the main operating parameters on the process was studied by using response surface methodology based on the BoxeBehnken design method.The prepared catalyst showed high efficiency in oxidative desulfurization of diesel fuel with initial sulfur content of 8040 mg·kg^(-1)S.From statistical analysis,a significant quadratic model was obtained to predict the sulfur removal as a function of efficient parameters.The maximum efficiency of 72.4%was achieved under optimized conditions at oxidant/sulfur molar ratio of 10.2,temperature of 71℃,reaction time of 113 min,and catalyst dosage of 0.36 g.Also,the reusability of the BN was studied,and the result showed little reduction in activity of the catalyst after 10 times regeneration.Moreover,a plausible mechanism was proposed for oxidation of sulfur compounds on the surface of the catalyst.The present study shows that BN materials can be selected as promising metal-free catalysts for desulfurization process.

Epidemiological evidence presents that dust storms are related to respiratory diseases,such as pulmonary fibrosis(PF).However,the precise underlying mechanisms of SPM-elicited adverse effects still need to be investigated.Epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)process is a characteristic of PF.We discussed whether suspended particulate matter(SPM)is involved in EMT induction via transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1).In this study,a detailed elemental analysis(55 elements),particle size,and morphology were determined.To investigate the toxicity of SPM,an MTT test was performed to detect cell viability.Next,A549cells were exposed to selected concentrations of SPM(20 and 40μg/mL)for single and repeated exposures.The DCFH-DA assay showed that exposure to SPM could produce reactive oxygen species(ROS).The ELISA assay demonstrated increased levels of interleukin-8(IL-8)and TGF-β1 in the supernatant.Western blot was used to detect the expression of proteins associated with EMT and the SMAD3-dependent pathway.Results of western blot demonstrated that E-cadherin was reduced,whereas p-SMAD3,vimentin,andα-smooth muscle actin were elevated.Our findings indicated that SPM triggered EMT by induction of oxidative stress,inflammation,and the TGF-β1/SMAD3 pathway activation.

Using satellite-derived land surface temperatures to clarify the spatiotemporal warming trends of the Alborz Mountains in northern Iran

The Alborz Mountains are some of the highest in Iran,and they play an important role in controlling the climate of the country’s northern regions.The land surface temperature(LST)is an important variable that affects the ecosystem of this area.This study investigated the spatiotemporal changes and trends of the nighttime LST in the western region of the Central Alborz Mountains at elevations of 1500-4000 m above sea level.MODIS data were extracted for the period of 2000-2021,and the Mann-Kendall nonparametric test was applied to evaluating the changes in the LST.The results indicated a significant increasing trend for the monthly average LST in May-August along the southern aspect.Both the northern and southern aspects showed decreasing trends for the monthly average LST in October,November,and March and an increasing trend in other months.At all elevations,the average decadal change in the monthly average LST was more severe along the southern aspect(0.60°C)than along the northern aspect(0.37°C).The LST difference between the northern and southern aspects decreased in the cold months but increased in the hot months.At the same elevation,the difference in the lapse rate between the northern and southern aspects was greater in the hot months than in the cold months.With increasing elevation,the lapse rate between the northern and southern aspects disappeared.Climate change was concluded to greatly decrease the difference in LST at different elevations for April-July.

The problem addressed is the exact determination of the operator norm and lower bound of four-dimensional generalized Hausdorff matrices on the double sequence spaces L_(p).A Hardy type formulae is found as an exact value for their operator norm and a Copson type formulae is established as a lower estimate for their lower bound.Further,exact values are found for the operator norm and lower bound of the transpose of generalized Hausdorff matrices.

Loss of offsite power (LOOP) accident analysis by integration of deterministic and probabilistic approaches in Bushehr-1 VVER-1000/V446 nuclear power plant

The results of an accident analysis for the loss of offsite power(LOOP)scenario in a reference Bushehr-1 VVER-1000/V446 nuclear power plant(NPP)are presented in this paper.This study attempted to provide a better analysis of LOOP accident management by integrating deterministic and probabilistic approaches.The RELAP5 code was used to investigate the occurrence of specific thermal–hydraulic phenomena.The probabilistic safety assessment of the LOOP accident is presented using the SAPHIRE software.LOOP accident data were extracted from the Bushehr NPP final safety analysis reports and probabilistic safety analysis reports.A deterministic approach was used to reduce the core damage frequency in the probabilistic analysis of LOOP accidents.The probabilistic approach was used to better observe the philosophy of defense in depth and safety margins in the deterministic analysis of the LOOP accident.The results show that the integration of the two approaches in LOOP accident investigations improved accident control.

An MCDM approach to assessing influential factors on healthcare providers’safe performance during the COVID-19 pandemic:Probing into demographic variables

This study assessed the influence of occupational stress,individual resilience,and organizational resilience on the safety performance of healthcare providers during the COVID-19 pandemic.Demographic variables including age,work experience,and gender were explored.Data were collected from 344 healthcare providers employed at a teaching hospital.The entropy method and the multi-criteria decision-making(MCDM)method were used to examine the influence of occupational stress,individual resilience,and organizational resilience on the safe performance of healthcare providers.The results of the entropy method showed that organizational resilience was the most influential factor in the safe performance of older healthcare providers.In contrast,individual resilience was the most significant factor in enhancing the safety performance of younger healthcare providers.Analyses of work experience indicated that individual resilience was the most influential factor in the safe performance of less experienced healthcare providers.Gender-based analysis revealed that individual resilience had a major effect on the safety performance of both women and men.The findings of this study could assist managers in improving the performance of the healthcare sector during pandemics by using and implementing resilience concepts at both the individual and organizational levels.

Tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis in Iran:A review

In recent years,the number of cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Iran has increased.The goal of this study was to determine the epidemiological status,clinical symptoms,diagnostic methods,and treatment strategies of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Iran,with a focus on tuberculosis meningitis and miliary tuberculosis.Between January 1,2000 and June 1,2021,1651 cases of tuberculosis meningitis and miliary tuberculosis were discovered in Iran.The prevalence of tuberculosis meningitis was higher in Sistan and Baluchestan,South Khorasan,and Mazandaran compared with other provinces.The most prevalent symptoms of tuberculous meningitis were fever,anorexia,headache,neck stiffness,loss of consciousness,and vomiting.The most commonly used procedures for diagnosing tuberculous meningitis were polymerase chain reaction and cerebrospinal fluid culture.The most prevalent clinical symptoms of miliary tuberculosis were fever,lethargy,weariness,and anorexia.In 70%of chest radiographs,a miliary pattern was visible.Bone marrow biopsy was used to diagnose miliary tuberculosis in 80%of patients,while bronchoalveolar lavage was used in 20%of cases.The conventional 6-month treatment approach for tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis was used for all of the participants in the investigations.Given the high prevalence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis patients in Iran and the devastating consequences of the disease,the researchers recommend that further study be done to prevent extrapulmonary tuberculosis in the general population.

Effect of transparency on Josephson junction between s+g-wave superconductors

In this paper, a dc Josephson junction between borocarbide superconductors has been studied theoretically. The s＋g-wave pairing symmetry which is observed in rare earth complex of borocarbides has a huge anisotropy and is an interesting form of unconventional superconductivity. We calculate the Josephson current in a superconductorinsulator-superconductor （SIS） Josephson junction with s＋g-wave superconducting pairing symmetry. In our planar junction c-axis is parallel to an interface with finite transparency but ab-planes of two tetragonal superconductors are misorientated by angle α. We obtain that the Josephson current is strongly dependent on mis-orientation between the left and the right ab-planes. An insulator sandwiched between two superconductors which acts as a potential barrier is demonstrated by a transparency coefficient. The effects of the potential barrier and the mis-orientation on the current are studied analytically and numerically. Occurrence of 0-θ transition in this s＋g-wave junction is investigated in this paper. A comparison between d-wave Josephson junction and s＋g-wave one is also made in the present paper.

Investigation of a novel pyrogenic pulser in a laboratory motor

In this paper,a novel pyrogenic pulser was designed both analytically and numerically and was evaluated with empirical tests.The motivation of this study was the need for active control of the aero acoustic pressure oscillations by injecting the secondary flow into the solid rocket motor.First,in brief,pyrotechnic and pyrogenic pulsers were introduced,and then analytical governing equations were presented in three transient,sinusoidal and Hercules methods.In order to understand the internal pressure of the pulsar and its plume length,the injection flow field was evaluated using the ANSYS-Fluent software with both k-ωSST and k-εRealizable models both at ambient and motor pressure.After that,the design and manufacturing of the pulser hardware and the test process were described.Finally,analytical,numerical and experimental results were discussed.The results show that there is a good correlation between the transient analysis in theory and the numerical solution by the k-ωSST model and the empirical test data.In addition,pyrogenic pulsers design depends on various parameters of motor and pulser charge performance prediction.The quality of pulser charge bonding to its insulator and erosion of its throat path due to injection have an important role to obtain a desirable pulser mass flow rate and plume length.
