One of the main environmental pollutants is heavy metals. Due to extensive usage in industry, these metals enter biological cycle rapidly and contaminated water and soil resources rapidly. In this work, lead, copper, zinc and chromium of Bandar Abbas wastewater are examined. For this research, nine stations were set for measurement in urban level in Bandar Abbas and sampling of aforesaid metals was performed in fall and winter 2006 in these stations. After extraction and preparation operations using APDC-MIBK, samples were measured using flame atomic absorption system. According to results, concentrate of studied metals was lower than allowable standard value set by Iran environmental protection organization for agricultural purposes and sewage to ground level waters. In addition, efficiency of Bandar Abbas wastewater treatment plant to remove these metals is 40% - 70% from which highest removal is for zinc as much as 71.1% and lowest level is for copper as much as 40.5%. However, copper level was higher than allowable level for agricultural purposes in spring and summer (0.21 mg/L and 0.23 mg/L, respectively) and lower in fall and winter (0.103 mg/L and 0.098 mg/L, respectively). Furthermore, changes in concentration of metals in these stations in various seasons were measured and analyzed using one-way variance analysis and simultaneous effects of time and place on measured variables were analyzed using two-way variance analysis.

BACKGROUND： 3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine （MDMA, also known as ＂ecstasy＂） has been shown to exhibit neurotoxic effects on the hippocampus. However, exposure to sub-lethal insults of MDMA has been reported to result in neuroprotection. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the effects of MDMA on hippocampal neuronal viability, caspase-3 activity, and mRNA expression of the N-methyI-D-aspartate （NMDA） receptor 2B （NR2B） subunit. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A cytological, in vitro experiment was performed at the Department of Anatomy, School of Medicine, and Department of Toxicology-Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2008. MATERIALS： MDMA was extracted from ecstasy tablets, which were kindly supplied by the Pharmacology-Toxicology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. METHODS： Hippocampal neurons were isolated from Wistar rats at gestational day 18. Following primary culture, hippocampal neuronal viability was detected by MTT assay. Varying concentrations of MDMA （100-5 000 μmol/L） were used to determine lethal concentration 50 （LC50）, which was around 1 500 μmol/L. Five concentrations of MDMA below 1 500 μmol/L （100, 200, 400, 800, and 1 050 μmol/L） were used for the remaining experiments. After 24 hours of MDMA treatment, NR2B mRNA expression was detected by RT-PCR, and caspase-3 relative activity was determined by colorimetric assay. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Hippocampal neuronal viability, caspase-3 activity, and NR2B mRNA expression. RESULTS： MDMA-induced neurotoxicity in hippocampal neuronal cultures was dose-dependent. In high concentrations （1 000-5 000μmol/L） of MDMA, neuronal viability was decreased. However, with a 500 μmol/L dose of MDMA, neuronal viability was significantly increased （P 〈 0.01）. Low concentrations of MDMA （200 and 400μmol/L） significantly decreased caspase-3 activity （P 〈 0.01）, whereas high concentrations of MDMA significantly increased caspase-3 activity （P 〈 0.01）. NR2B

Background： Gastroesophageal reflux disease （GERD） is one of the most common gastrointestinal com- plaints. GERD, caused by the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus, leads to troublesome symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation. It is classified into two types： erosive esophagitis, characterized by visible esophageal mucosa erosion in endoscopy, and non-erosive reflux disease （NERD）. GERD is a chronic and recurrent disease that impairs the quality of life and imposes socioeco- nomic and therapeutic burdens to both patients and society. Objective： Due to the failure of the conventional treatments for GERD and to the traditional use of Amla （Phyllanthus emblica L.）, in addition to beneficial effects shown in recent studies, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of Amla tablet for improvement of symptoms of patients with NERD. Design, setting, participants and interventions： We designed a double-arm, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Sixty-eight patients who had classic symptoms of GERD （heartburn, regurgitation and epigastralgia） for at least three months before the start of the trial were randomized in two parallel groups. Patients in the Amla group received two 500 mg Amla tablets twice a day, after meals, for 4 weeks. In the control group, patients received placebo tablets similar to the Amla prescription. Main outcome measures： The patients were visited at baseline, and at the end of the 2nd and 4th weeks of intervention; their symptoms were measured on a frequency and severity scale for the symptoms of NERD, according to the quality of life in reflux-associated disease questionnaire. Results： Frequencies of heartburn and regurgitation in both groups of the study were significantly reduced after intervention （P 〈 0.001）. Dear Editor： Anti-sperm antibodies （ASAs） are composed of numerous antibodies interacting with multiple sperm antigens that play a role in fertility. In males, ASAs cause ＇immune infertility＇ by decreasing sperm counts and normal forms, as well as reducing sperm motility and viability, markedly reducing the likelihood of natural conception. The development of ASA in the male depends on the release of sequestered antigens on germ cells following the disruption of the blood-testis barrier.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the influence of cupping on the quality of life of healthy people who referred to traditional Persian medicine clinics in ***: All participants were examined by Traditional Persian Medicine specialists and their temperaments were determined. The area between the shoulders was cleaned, and cupping was performed with a disposable cupping glass for a few minutes. The questionnaire used in this project was the Persian version of the SF-36 questionnaire which assesses people's understanding of their health status. Before cupping and then one monthafter cupping, all participants were called and the questionnaires were completed again. Finally, all given data was ***: From a total of 290 questionnaires completed in the first phase of the project, 112 patients were excluded. Ultimately, the data of 178 participants was analyzed. After one month, the quality of life score of 155 participants(88%) increased, remained unchanged for 21 participants(11.7%), and decreased for 2 participants(1.1%). Asked about possible complications from cupping, 160 participants reported no side effects(89.9%).CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that cupping therapy can improve the scores of quality of life in the participants in Tehran.

Objective： An accurate scoring system for intra-abdominal injury （IAI） based on clinical manifesta- tion and examination may decrease unnecessary CT scans, save time, and reduce healthcare cost. This study is de- signed to provide a new scoring system for a better diagno- sis of IAI after blunt trauma. Methods： This prospective observational study was performed from April 2011 to October 2012 on patients aged above 18 years and suspected with blunt abdominal trauma （BAT） admitted to the emergency department （ED） of Imam Hussein Hospital and Shohadaye Hafte Tir Hospital. All patients were assessed and treated based on Advanced Trauma Life Support and ED protocol. Diagnosis was done according to CT scan findings, which was considered as the gold standard. Data were gathered based on patient＇s history, physical exam, ultrasound and CT scan findings by a general practitioner who was not blind to this study. Chi- square test and logistic regression were done. Factors with significant relationship with CT scan were imported in multi- variate regression models, where a coefficient （13） was given based on the contribution of each of them. Scoring systemwas developed based on the obtained total [3 of each factor. Results： Altogether 261 patients （80.1% male） were enrolled （48 cases of IAI）. A 24-point blunt abdominal trauma scoring system （BATSS） was developed. Patients were di- vided into three groups including low （score〈8）, moderate （8≤score〈12） and high risk （score≥ 12）. In high risk group immediate laparotomy should be done, moderate group needs further assessments, and low risk group should be kept under observation. Low risk patients did not show positive CT-scans （specificity 100%）. Conversely, all high risk patients had positive CT-scan findings （sensitivity 100%）. The receiver operating characteristic curve indicated a close relationship between the results of CT scan and BATSS （sensitivity=99.3%）. Objective:To find importance of morphometrie criterion of larval rostellar hook of Echinococcus granulosus(***) and the easy and reliable method for distinguish sheep and camel strains in epidemiologic ***:Larval rostellar hooks(n=1860) of 31 camel and sheep isolates in Iran,which aheady had been characterized by *** carefully processed by computerized imagime analysis system(CIAS) and acquired data about rostellar books were analyzed using software ***:Measurement analysis of rostellar hooks[mean Iength (24.23±3.12lμm]indicated that length of the large hook was a remarkable parameter for strain *** analysis demonstrated that CIAS could be used as a reliable tool to distinguish camel from sheep strains with high sensitivity(95.2%) and specificity(91.5%). Conclusions:CIAS as a specific,sensitive,economic,fast,and reliable means might be used for differentiation of *** *** perimeter and area were measured by digital technology,they were not shown as discriminative criterion as total hook length did.
