Assessment of fibroblast growth factor 19 as a non-invasive serum marker for hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND Fibroblast growth factor 19(FGF-19)is one of the founding members of the endocrine FGF ***,it has been the subject of much interest owing to its role in various physiological processes affecting glucose and lipid metabolism and the regulation of bile acid secretion as well as cell proliferation,differentiation,and ***,FGF-19 secretion in an autocrine style has reportedly contributed to cancer progression in various types of malignancies including hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).AIM To estimate the serum FGF-19 concentrations in HCC cases and assess its diagnostic performance for the detection of *** We recruited 90 adult participants and divided them into three equal groups:Healthy controls,cirrhosis patients,and HCC *** FGF-19 concentrations were measured using the Human FGF-19 ELISA *** We detected a high statistically significant difference in serum FGF-19 levels among the three *** highest level was observed in the HCC group,followed by the cirrhosis and control groups(236.44±40.94 vs 125.63±31.54 vs 69.60±20.90 pg/mL,respectively,P≤0.001).FGF-19 was positively correlated with alpha fetoprotein(AFP;r=0.383,P=0.003)and international normalised ratio(r=0.357,P=0.005),while it was negatively correlated with albumin(r=-0.500,P≤0.001).For the detection of HCC,receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the best cut-off point of AFP was>8.2 ng/mL with an area under the curve(AUC)of 0.78,sensitivity of 63.33%,specificity of 83.33%,positive predictive value(PPV)of 79.2%,negative predictive value(NPV)of 69.4%,and total accuracy of 78%.However,FGF-19 at a cut-off point>180 pg/mL had an AUC of 0.98,sensitivity of 100%,specificity of 90.0%,PPV of 90.0%,NPV of 100%,and total accuracy of 98%.CONCLUSION FGF-19 represents a possible novel non-invasive marker for *** may improve the prognosis of HCC patients due to its utility in several aspects of HCC detection and management.

Super-Resolution Based on Curvelet Transform and Sparse Representation

Super-resolution techniques are used to reconstruct an image with a high resolution from one or more low-resolution image(s).In this paper,we proposed a single image super-resolution *** uses the nonlocal mean filter as a prior step to produce a denoised *** proposed algorithm is based on curvelet *** converts the denoised image into low and high frequencies(sub-bands).Then we applied a multi-dimensional interpolation called Lancozos interpolation over both *** parallel,we applied sparse representation with over complete dictionary for the denoised *** proposed algorithm then combines the dictionary learning in the sparse representation and the interpolated sub-bands using inverse curvelet transform to have an image with a higher *** experimental results of the proposed super-resolution algorithm show superior performance and obviously better-recovering images with enhanced *** comparison study shows that the proposed super-resolution algorithm outperforms the *** mean absolute error is 0.021±0.008 and the structural similarity index measure is 0.89±0.08.

Shear Let Transform Residual Learning Approach for Single-Image Super-Resolution

Super-resolution techniques are employed to enhance image resolution by reconstructing high-resolution images from one or more low-resolution ***-resolution is of paramount importance in the context of remote sensing,satellite,aerial,security and surveillance ***-resolution remote sensing imagery is essential for surveillance and security purposes,enabling authorities to monitor remote or sensitive areas with greater *** study introduces a single-image super-resolution approach for remote sensing images,utilizing deep shearlet residual learning in the shearlet transform domain,and incorporating the Enhanced Deep Super-Resolution network(EDSR).Unlike conventional approaches that estimate residuals between high and low-resolution images,the proposed approach calculates the shearlet coefficients for the desired high-resolution image using the provided low-resolution image instead of estimating a residual image between the high-and low-resolution *** shearlet transform is chosen for its excellent sparse approximation ***,remote sensing images are transformed into the shearlet domain,which divides the input image into low and high *** shearlet coefficients are fed into the EDSR *** high-resolution image is subsequently reconstructed using the inverse shearlet *** incorporation of the EDSR network enhances training stability,leading to improved generated *** experimental results from the Deep Shearlet Residual Learning approach demonstrate its superior performance in remote sensing image recovery,effectively restoring both global topology and local edge detail information,thereby enhancing image *** to other networks,our proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of image quality,achieving an average peak signal-to-noise ratio of 35 and a structural similarity index measure of approximately 0.9.

M2BPGi for assessing liver fibrosis in patients with hepatitis C treated with direct-acting antivirals

BACKGROUND Assessing liver fibrosis is important for predicting the efficacy of direct-acting antivirals(DAAs)and patient ***-invasive techniques to assess liver fibrosis are becoming ***,serum Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer(M2BPGi)was identified as a non-invasive marker of liver *** To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of M2BPGi in assessing liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC)treated with *** From December 2017 to August 2018,80 treatment-naive adult patients with CHC who were eligible for DAAs therapy were consecutively enrolled in this observational cohort *** 12 weeks,65 patients were treated with sofosbuvir/daclatasvir,and 15 patients were treated with sofosbuvir/daclatasvir and a weight-based dose of ribavirin at knowledge and technology association for hepatitis C management clinic,Cairo,*** measured serum M2BPGi levels,PAPAS index,fibrosis-4(FIB-4)score and liver stiffness measurements(LSM)at baseline and 12 weeks after the end of *** M2BPGi levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent *** All patients achieved sustained virologic response(SVR12)(100%).Serum M2BPGi levels,LSM,FIB-4 score and PAPAS index decreased significantly at SVR12(P<0.05).Serum M2BPGi levels correlated positively with LSM at baseline and SVR12(P<0.001).At baseline,compared with the FIB-4 score and PAPAS index,M2BPGi was the best marker to distinguish patients with grade F4 fibrosis(AUC=0.801,P<0.001),patients with grade F2 from grade F0-1 fibrosis(AUC=0.713,P=0.012),patients with grade F3-4 from grade F0-2 fibrosis(AUC=0.730,P<0.001),and patients with grade F2-4 from grade F0-1 fibrosis(AUC=0.763,P<0.001).At SVR12,M2BPGi had the greatest AUCs for differentiating patients with grade F4 fibrosis(AUC=0.844,P<0.001),patients with grade F3 from grade F0-2 fibrosis(AUC=0.893,P=0.002),patients with grade F3-4 from grade F0-2 fibrosis(AUC=0.891,P<0.001),and patients with grad

Comparison of sucrose intake and production of elimination spots among adult Musca domestica, Musca autumnalis, Phormia regina and Protophormia terraenovae

Objective: To compare the differences in intake and excretion between Musca domestica and other three species from families Muscidae and Calliphoridae which may help explaining the significance of house fly in the transmission of ***: The four adult species were supplied with two concentrations of sucrose via modified capillary feeder assay system. The two sucrose concentrations were applied to one adult male/each experiment and the elimination spots were counted. Using 0.25 mol/L sucrose + 0.25% bromophenol blue, one active non-starved male/cup was observed carefully for 1 h to record its behavior. As a growing medium used in bacterial transmission experiments, undiluted trypticase soy broth was used to feed 3-day-old females and males of Musca domestica following two different diets upon emergence and the frequency of elimination spots was ***: The two Musca species have half the weight of the two Phormia *** the volume of intake per hour, house fly took as much as the other species, all of which were larger. House fly produced twice, or more, the number of elimination spots/h than the other three species. Feeding the flies a sugar liquid diet resulted in producing more fecal spots than regurgitation spots. The male house flies produced less elimination spots/h when fed with trypticase soy broth than with the two sucrose ***: House flies eliminated more than the other examined fly species and most of these elimination events were defecation which implicates the fecal route for pathogen transmission by this important vector.

Evaluation of implanted perforated lacrimal punctal plugs using anterior segment optical coherence tomography

Purpose:Evaluation of the patency and position of perforated lacrimal punctal plugs implanted for treating punctal stenosis together with quantitative assessment of the precorneal tear film using anterior segment optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT).Methods:In a prospective study,the lower punctum of 54 eyes of 29 patients implanted with perforated punctal plugs were examined using AS-OCT during the early postoperative *** tear meniscus height(TMH)and tear meniscus area(TMA)were ***,the patency of the plug,its position,TMH and TMA were evaluated,and the results were correlated with postoperative *** scale was used for epiphora ***:Using AS-OCT,48(88.9%)plugs were found in proper position while 6(11.1%)were *** lumen of the plugs was completely patent in 47(87%)plugs,partially obstructed in 2(3.7%)plugs and completely occluded in 5(9.2%)*** was a statistically significant postoperative decrease of TMH and TMA(P<0.001)and postoperative epiphora Munk score(P<0.001).Conclusion:AS-OCT is a valuable,reliable,and noninvasive investigative tool that can detect the proper positioning,patency,and contents of the implanted perforated lacrimal punctal plugs in addition to measurement of TMH and TMA.

Trabeculectomy with Ologen implant versus mitomycin C in congenital glaucoma secondary to Sturge Weber Syndrome

AIM： To compare the efficacy and safety of collagen matrix implant [Ologen（OLO） implant] versus mitomycin C（MMC） with subscleral trabeculectomy（SST） for the surgical treatment of congenital glaucoma（CG） in SturgeWeber Syndrome（SWS）.METHODS： A prospective comparative randomized study of 20 eyes of 16 patients with CG associated with SWS was divided into two groups. The first group（MMC Group） included 10 eyes that were subjected to SST with MMC. The second group（OLO Group） included 10 eyes that were subjected to trabeculectomy with a collagen matrix implant（OLO implant）. Postoperative evaluation included intraocular pressure（IOP） level, bleb evaluation, complications, and the need for further medication or surgical intervention. RESULTS： The mean preoperative IOP was 29±3.16 mm Hg in MMC and 29.8±3.08 mm Hg in OLO eyes. Mean 12-month percentage reduction in IOP was significant in both groups（57.9% and 56.3%）. At the end of the 12 postoperative follow-up month, in the MMC Group, 80% of eyes achieved the complete success, 20% of eyes had qualified success with no failed surgery in comparison to OLO Group which 70% of eyes achieved the complete success, 20% of eyes had qualified success with 10% failed surgery. In terms of complications, the MMC Group had a higher rate of complications than the OLO Group in the form of thin polycystic bleb in 6 eyes（60%）, blebitis in only one eye（10%） treated with topical antibiotics, shallow anterior chamber in two eyes（20%）.CONCLUSION： This study proves that the use of a collagen matrix implant yields equally effective results as MMC when combined with trabeculectomy for the treatment of CG in SWS. Furthermore, OLO implantation is safe and has low incidences of complications.
