Rhubarb extract partially improves mucosal integrity in chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis

AIM To investigate the effects of orally gavaged aqueous rhubarb extract(RE) on 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)-induced intestinal mucositis in rats. METHODS Female Dark Agouti rats(n = 8/group) were gavaged daily(1 ml) with water, high-dose RE(HDR; 200 mg/kg) or low-dose RE(lDR; 20mg/kg) for eight days. Intestinal mucositis was induced(day 5) with 5-FU(150 mg/kg) via intraperitoneal injection. Intestinal tissue samples were collected for myeloperoxidase(MPO) activity and histological examination. Xenopus oocytes expressing aquaporin 4 water channels were prepared to examine the effect of aqueous RE on cell volume, indicating a potential mechanism responsible for modulating net fluid absorption and secretion in the gastrointestinal tract. Statistical significance was assumed at P lTS B o d y w e i g h t w a s s i g n i f i c a n t l y r e d u c e d i n r a t s administered 5-FU compared to healthy controls(P ly increased intestinal MPO levels(≥ 307%; P lthy controls. However, lDR attenuated this effect in 5-FU treated rats, significantly decreasing ileal MPO activity(by 45%; P ls. 5-FU significantly reduced intestinal mucosal thickness(by ≥ 29% P lthy controls. lDR significantly increased ileal mucosal thickness in 5-FU treated rats(19%; P lative to 5-FU controls. In xenopus oocytes expressing AQP4 water channels, RE selectively blocked water influx into the cell, induced by a decrease in external osmotic pressure. As water efflux was unaltered by the presence of extracellular RE, the directional flow of water across the epithelial barrier, in the presence of extracellular RE, indicated that RE may alleviate water loss across the epithelial barrier and promote intestinal health in chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis.CONClUSION In summary, low dose RE improves selected parameters of mucosal integrity and reduces ileal inflammation, manifesting from 5-FU

Transcriptional Regulation and Signaling in Phosphorus Starvation: What About legumes?

The availability of soil phosphorus （P）, an essential element, is one of the most important requirements for plant growth and crop production. The morphological and physiological adaptations evolved by plants to cope with P starvation have been well characterized. Several P deficiency plant responses are regulated at the transcriptional level. Microarray analysis has generated valuable information on global gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana grown under P-stress. Despite the identification of P responsive genes, little is known about the regulation of gene expression changes. Four transcription factors, PHRI, WRKY75, ZAT6 and BHlH32, involved in P starvation signaling have been characterized in Arabidopsis, and signaling pathways are deciphered. This review analyzes the current knowledge of transcriptional regulation of P starvation responses in Arabidopsis vis-a-vis legumes such as lupine, common bean and Medicago truncatula. The knowledge on regulatory and signaling mechanisms involved in P acquisition and use in legumes will be useful for improvement of these crops, which account for a large proportion of the world＇s crop production, providing good nutritional quality feed and food.

Agave salmiana ash and poultry eggshell powder as CaO sources were used for obtaining nanostructured hydro-xyapatite(HAP).The synthesis was carried out by the Green Chemistry Hydrothermal Biosynthesis at 180℃ with a pH of 5,by reacting CaO from Agave Salmiana ash and Eggshell powder,with dibasic caldium phosphate(CaH-PO_(4)+2H_(2)O)in an aqueous solution,with Aloe barbadensis extract.The product was characterized by X-ray dif-fraction,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM),and Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM).The size and shape of the hydroxyapatite particles changed dramati-cally in the presence of Aloe barbadensis.large crystals of Hydroxyapatite were observed when Eggshell powder and Agave salmiana ash were used as raw materials in the presence of the Aloe barbadensis surfactant.Crystals with shapes of ribbons and plates from 1 micrometers to 8 micrometers were observed when using the eggshell powder in the presence of Aloe bar badensis and,in the case of Agave salmiana ash in the presence of Aloe bar-badensis,crystals with shapes of quadra ngular prisms and hexagonal(polyhedra)with sizes from 2 micrometers to 20 micrometers were observed.Hydroxyapatite was therefore successfully biosynthesized by a green and sus-tainable method that reduces the environmental impact.

Analysis of heterogeneous characteristics in a geothermal area with low permeability and high temperature

An analytical methodology for reservoir characterization was applied in the central and southwestern zones of los Humeros geothermal field(lHGF). This study involves analysis of temperature, pressure,enthalpy and permeability in wells and their distribution along the area. The wells located in the central western side of the geothermal field are productive, whereas those located at the central-eastern side are non-productive. Through temperature profiles, determined at steady state in the analyzed wells, it was observed that at bottom conditions(approximately 2300 m depth), temperatures vary between 280 and360℃. The temperatures are higher at the eastern side of central zone of lHGF. A review of transient pressure tests, laboratory measurements of core samples, and correlation of circulation losses during drilling suggest that permeability of the formation is low. The enthalpy behavior in productive wells shows a tendency of increase in the steam fraction. It was found that productivity behavior has inverse relation with permeability of rock formation. Further, it is observed that an imbalance exists between exploitation and recharge. It is concluded from the results that the wells located at central-eastern area have low permeability and high temperature, which indicates possibility of heat storage.

COVID-19 Times: Impact on Information Generation and Data Sharing

At the beginning of 2020, human activities were interrupted by a new virus, identified as SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19 disease. The scientific area was no exception: for a certain period, researchers around the world were forced to leave their laboratories and work remotely. There was a global necessity for finding alternatives focused on generating knowledge and publishing data, so repositories of scientific information, such as databases, represented strong support. In the specific case of life sciences, different strategies allowed rapid compilation of data and its sharing worldwide. Therefore, in this work, the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the amount of peer-reviewed and published papers during COVID-19 times was analyzed along with the role of databases. Our results pointed out that an increase in the number of papers belonging to different knowledge fields took place, with the medical field being the most significant. On the other hand, the complete genome of the new virus was sequenced, and repositories were created with sufficient data for monitoring, preventing, and controlling its dissemination. This was the case for the generation of vaccines in addition to potential candidates for drugs against COVID-19. However, although in 2021, vaccines allowed us to gradually return to our activities, databases and the generation of other repositories remain a key point for facing new strains and adapting to a new reality. Finally, this paper discusses joint efforts to tackle the obstacles of the pandemic, not only from a medical but also from the point of view regarding the fight against misinformation.

Monitoring Water Quality in Ballona lagoon, los Angeles, California: Nitrate level Fluctuation in low and High Tide Condition

The coastal wetland, Ballona lagoon in Southern California has experienced degradation and size reduction due to urbanization. This study analyzes nitrate concentrations in the lagoon to identify contamination sources and assess its impact. The study includes determining nitrate levels during high and low tides during wet and dry seasons, establishing concentration gradients, and examining the relationship between salinity and nitrate concentrations. The nitrate concentrations were found to be higher in locations closer to the head of the lagoon, particularly in urbanized areas, suggesting land-based sources during the dry season’s high tide (S2: 2.37 mg/l;S3: 3.85 mg/l;S4: 3.91 mg/l). Findings highlight the importance of managing nitrate contamination near urban areas. Monitoring nitrate levels over time are crucial for sustainability efforts. This research emphasizes the need for long-term monitoring and conservation strategies to mitigate nitrate contamination in Ballona lagoon.

Detection of Rice Yellow Mottle at the Asymptomatic Stage by Hyperspectral Fluorescence and Reflectance Spectroscopies

Rice yellow mottle is considered the most destructive disease threatening rice production in Africa. Early detection of this infection in rice is essential to limit its expansion and proliferation. However, there is no research devoted to the spectral detection of rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) infection, especially in the asymptomatic or early stages. This work proposes the use of hyperspectral fluorescence and reflectance data at leaf level for the detection of this disease in asymptomatic stages. A greenhouse experiment was therefore conducted to collect hyperspectral fluorescence and reflectance data at different stages of infection. These data allowed to calculate nine vegetation indices: one from fluorescence spectra and eight from reflectance spectra. A t-test made it possible to identify, from the second day after infection, four relevant reflectance vegetation indices to discriminate healthy leaves from those infected: these are Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI), Transformed Chlorophyll Absorption in Reflectance Index (TCARI), Structure Intensive Pigment Index (SIPI) and Simple Ratio Pigment Index (SRPI). The fluorescence index was less sensitive in detecting infection. The four significant vegetation indices for the detection of RYMV were then used to build and evaluate models for discriminating plants according to their health status by the supervised classification of support vector machine (SVM) at different stages of infection. The maximum overall accuracy is 92.5% six days after inoculation (6 DAI). The sixth day after inoculation would be the adequate day to detect RYMV. This plants discrimination was validated by the mean reflectance spectra and by the histograms showing the differences between the average reflectance vegetation indices values of the two types of plants. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of differentiating RYMV-infected samples.
