Simple Food Group Diversity as a Proxy Indicator for Iron and Vitamin A Status of Rural Primary School Children in Uganda

Children in resource poor settings are at a high risk of inadequate iron and vitamin A intake when diets lack diversity and are dominated by staple foods. Yet comparative information on diet quality among school children is scarce. The objective of the study was to assess the potential of simple food group diversity to serve as a proxy indicator of iron and vitamin A status among rural school children in Uganda. A cross sectional correlation model of associations between Food Group Diversity (FGD) and iron and vitamin A status was used. We analyzed 8 schools in Kumi District, Uganda, randomly selected from the 34 schools that participated in the main part of the study. Our sample included primary school children, aged between 9-15 years (n = 172). Food group diversity and food variety (FV) were calculated from both a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and a 24-hour dietary recall. The FGD and FVS were tested against iron (as serum ferritin) and vitamin A (as serum retinol) status. The FGD (based on FFQ data) was 9.6 (±1.9). There was a positive correlation between 24-hour recall and FFQ for consumption of cereals (Corr. Coef = 0.28;p 0.05), which was also the most highly consumed group (98.9% & 86.9% by FFQ and 24-hour recall;respectively). Consistent with other studies, increase in the number of food groups significantly increased serum ferritin and serum retinol measures (p 0.001). Presence of at least one food item in the “roots & tubers”;“cereals”;and “pulses/nuts”, significantly increased serum ferritin and serum retinol concentrations (p 0.01). We speculate that simple food group diversity may reflect intake and serve as a simple indicator of iron and vitamin A status among school children. Strategies aimed at increasing dietary diversity in the community may benefit the families of these children and improve their micronutrient status.

In this paper we study some van den Bergh open clusters combining photometry and astrometry. A model which analyses the proper motion distribution and the stellar density is applied to find the kinematic parameters and stellar membership in the region of the open clusters vdB92, vdB146 (NGC 7129) and vdB150. The astrometric data are obtained from UCAC4 catalogue. The centre coordinates, the components of mean proper motion, the angular diameter and the astrometric members are reported, taking the following values: for vdB92: α=105.97281°±0.13113°, δ=−11.57814°±0.10575°,?μαcosδ=−3.46±0.19mas/yr,μδ=1.27±0.19mas/yr, 34', 60 members;for vdB146: α=325.78423°±0.15297°, δ=66.13575°±0.02907°, μαcosδ=−2.71±0.25mas/yr, μδ=−3.32±0.25mas/yr, 9', 5 members;and for vdB150: α=332.22519°±0.06074°, δ=73.40232°±0.0.07789°, μαcosδ=3.07±0.90mas/yr, μδ=4.65±0.90mas/yr, 15', 7 members. The incidence of the proper motion errors in the determination of the cluster parameters and of the stellar membership is analysed and it is found that they do not significantly change. We finally compare the astrometric members with the photometric ones given in the literature.

This article highlights an optimal robust control technique called H-infinity, which thanks to a particular algorithm offers several solutions in the experimental implementation of harmonic compensators of systems with API-siemens modules. This control and command technique is directly tested on a TLC adaptive hybrid filter topology that provides benefits, such as reduced switching losses when injecting currents in the network, limitation of resonance problems and above all low power consumption at the DC bus level, thus allowing us to obtain results for 105 V to be compared with existing models in the literature which require 600 V for the same performance. This article therefore simultaneously offers two essential contributions to the optimization of harmonic pollution control. A first contribution is essentially based on the H-infinite algorithm and its particularity in its implementation on our TLC hybrid model. The second is on the advantages offered by the TLC-HAPF hybrid topology. The results obtained with this algorithm give us THDs conforming to the IEEE 519-1996 and which are very meaningful compared to the results obtained with other robust and stochastic control algorithms taken under the same conditions.

BACKGROUND Liver fibrosis can result in end-stage liver failure and *** To examine human liver fibrogenesis and anti-fibrotic therapies,we evaluated the three dimensional ex vivo liver slice(LS)*** Fibrotic liver samples(F0 to F4 fibrosis stage according to the METAVIR score)were collected from patients after liver *** liver slices(HLS)were cultivated for up to 21 *** C virus(HCV)infection,alcohol(ethanol stimulation)and steatosis(palmitate stimulation)were examined in fibrotic(F2 to F4)liver slices infected(or not)with HCV.F0-F1 HLS were used as *** day 0,either ursodeoxycholic acid(choleretic and hepatoprotective properties)and/or α-tocopherol(antioxidant properties)were added to standard of care on HLS and fibrotic liver slices,infected(or not)with *** of the biomarkers of fibrosis and the triglyceride production were checked by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and/or enzymelinked immunosorbent *** The cultures were viable in vitro for 21 days allowing to study fibrosis inducers and to estimate the effect of anti-fibrotic *** of the biomarkers of fibrosis and the progression to steatosis(estimated by triglycerides production)was increased with the addition of HCV and/or ethanol or *** day 15 of the follow-up studies,a significant decrease of both transforming growth factorβ-1 and Procol1A1 expression and triglycerides production was observed when a combined anti-fibrotic treatment was applied on HCV infected F2-F4 LS *** These results show that the human three dimensional ex vivo model effectively reflects the in vivo processes in damaged human liver(viral,alcoholic,nonalcoholic steatohepatitis liver diseases)and provides the proof of concept that the LS examined model permits a rapid evaluation of new anti-fibrotic therapies when used alone or in combination.

Background: Neonatal mortality is a major public health problem. Its reduction is one of the targets of the objectives for sustainable development. Objectives: To determine the frequency of late neonatal mortality, to determine the causes of death and to identify the factors associated with late neonatal mortality at Brazzaville University Hospital. Patients and methods: This was a descriptive and analytical study conducted in the neonatal department of the Brazzaville University Hospital from 1 January to 30 June 2018. It concerned all newborns admitted to the service and died between 7th and 28th day of life. The variables studied were epidemiological, clinical and evolutionary. For the study of the factors associated with late mortality, we compared the deceased newborns with those hospitalized in the service whose stay was at least seven days. The materiality threshold was 5%. Results: During the study period, 697 newborns were admitted to the service, 286 (41%) died, 79 (27.6%) on the seventh day or beyond. The median age at admission was one hour. These were male (44.3%) and female (55.7%) newborns. The causes of death were prematurity (50.7%), neonatal infection (36.7%), perinatal asphyxia (6.3%) and others (6.3%). The mean age at death was 13.5 ± 6.4 days (range: 7 and 28 days). Prematurity OR = 3.62 (95% CI: 1.2 - 10.6) is the factor associated with late mortality. Conclusion: Reducing late neonatal mortality requires the implementation of measures to improve the human and material capacities of the service.

In this paper, we propose a susceptible-exposed-infection-asymptomatic-hospitalized-recovered (SEIAHR) model with parameters on retrospective social distancing and masking. We estimated the model parameters from information published on the World Health Organization (WHO) website. We found that the actual reproduction number Rt varies over the period from 03 March to 07 June 2020 and moreover, effective control over contacts and the frequency of population movement would reduce the evolution of the epidemic (control c ≥ 50%). And the contact check has an influence on the base reproduction number R0.
