In the p.esent study, the effect of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside （AICAR） on long-chain fatty acid oxidation by hep.tocytes isolated from suckled neonatal p.g liver （a low ketogenic and lip.genic tissue） was tested Incubation of hep.tocytes with AICAR （0.5 raM） in the p.esence of ] mM of carnitine and 10 mM of glucose for 1 hour at 37℃ had no significant effect on total [1-14C]-p.lrnitate （0.5 mM） oxidation （14CO2 and 14C-Acid soluble p.oducts （ASp.）. Consistent with the fatty acid oxidation, carnitine p.lmitoyltransferase I activity and inhibition of its activity by malonyI-CoA （10 MM） assayed in cell homogenate also remained constant. However, addition of AICAR to the hep.tocytes decreased 14CO2 p.oduction by 18% comp.red to control （p.〈 0.06）. The reduction of labeled carboxylic carbon accumulated in C02 caused a significant difference in distribution of oxidative p.oducts between 14C02 and 14C-ASp.（p.〈 0.03） comp.red with the control. It was also noticed that acetyI-CoA carboxylase （ACC） was increased by AICAR （p.〈 0.03）, indicating that ACC might drive acetyI-CoA toward fatty acid synthesis p.thway and induce an increase in distribution of fatty acid carbon to 14C-ASp. Addition of insulin to hep.tocyte incubations with AICAR did not change the oxidative p.oduct distribution between CO2 and ASp. but further p.omoted ACC activity. The increased ACC activity was 70% higher than in the control group.when citrate was absent in the reaction medium and was 30% higher when citrate was p.esent in the medium. Our results suggest that AICAR may affect the distribution of metabolic p.oducts from fatty acid oxidation by changing ACC activity in hep.tocyte isolated from suckled neonatal p.glets; however, the basis for the increase in ACC activity elicited by AICAR is not ap.arent.

The need to inform consumers about the health imp.ct of their food choices is ever more p.essing in a world where obesity is a growing p.oblem. Concerns over food safety, its origins and its environmental imp.cts are also growing, as frequently rep.rted in the p.p.lar p.ess in many p.rts of the world. Nutritional and health information on food labels is quite well develop.d, but the comp.ex nature of the information p.esented may hinder widesp.ead use of the existing labels. In comp.rison, there has been little widesp.ead success of carbon labels on food, and their usefulness in reducing carbon emissions from consump.ion is uncertain. In an attemp. to address the need for clearer information on health and environmental imp.cts of food p.rchases, we p.esent a novel dual-p.rp.se food labelling system which p.ovides information on both health and environmental imp.cts of food items. This p.p.r p.esents results from a p.lot study introducing a novel ap.roach to food labelling: a simp.ified, combined carbon and health label to inform consumers simultaneously about the environmental and health imp.cts of their choices. Environmental imp.cts of various food categories were calculated on the basis of their relative energy use along the sup.ly chain by using a newly designed Food Energy Index. Health imp.cts were based on the NuVal system develop.d in the USA in 2010. As p.rt of the Norfolk Island Carbon and Health Evaluation study (NICHE), labels were designed, tested and disp.ayed on 25 food categories for a 3-month p.riod in the main sup.rmarket on Norfolk Island (Australia). The in-store labelling trial was followed by a consumer survey on their attitudes to the labels. The results from this p.lot trial indicate that consumers were sup.ortive of food labelling including both environmental and health imp.cts, but the information p.ovided in the dual labels was not sufficient to induce changes in consump.ion between food categories. Introduction: The absence of vertigo during the caloric test, desp.te a robust resp.nse, has been suggested to rep.esent a central vestibular system p.enomenon. The p.rp.se of this investigation was to determine the p.evalence of absent caloric-induced vertigo p.rcep.ion in an unselected group.of p.tients and to assess p.ssible p.edicting ***: p.osp.ctive investigation of 92 unselected p.tients who underwent caloric testing. Inclusion criteria were that each p.tient generate a maximum slow p.ase velocity(maxSp.) > 15 deg/sec and a caloric asymmetry of≤10%. Following the caloric, p.tients were asked, "Did you have any sensation of motion?"Results: Results showed 75% of p.tients rep.rted motion with a mean age of 56.51 years comp.red to a mean age of 66.55 in the 25% of p.tients rep.rting an absence of motion. A logistic regression was p.rformed and the overall model was statistically significant accounting for 29% of the variance in caloric p.rcep.ion. The significant p.edictor variables were p.tient age and maxSp. of the caloric resp.nse. The effect size for both variables was small with an odds ratio of.9 for maxSp. and 1.06 for ***: The current investigation showed that both age and maxSp. of the caloric resp.nse were significant p.edictors of vertigo p.rcep.ion during the caloric exam. However, the association between age and caloric p.rcep.ion is not conclusive. Although there is evidence to suggest that these findings rep.esent age-related changes in the central p.ocessing of vestibular system stimulation, there are additional unmeasured factors that influence the p.rcep.ion of caloric-induced vertigo.

Interfacial solar water evap.ration is a reliable way to accelerate water evap.ration and contaminant *** the recent advance in p.otothermal technology,a functional sp.nge was p.ep.red by coating a sodium alginate(SA)imp.egnated sp.nge with a surface layer of reduced grap.ene oxide(rGO)to act as a p.otothermal conversion medium and then subsequently evaluated for its ability to enhance p. extraction from contaminated soil driven by interfacial solar *** SA loaded sp.nge had a p. adsorp.ion cap.city of 107.4 mg g^(-1).Coating the top.surface of the SA sp.nge with rGO increased water evap.ration p.rformance to 1.81 kg m^(-2)h^(-1)in soil media under one sun illumination and with a wind velocity of 2 m s^(-1).Over 12 continuous days of indoor evap.ration testing,the p. extraction efficiency was increased by 22.0%under 1 sun illumination relative to that observed without ***,p. extraction was further imp.oved by 48.9%under outdoor evap.ration conditions comp.red to indoor ***,this initial work shows the significant p.tential of interfacial solar evap.ration technologies for p. contaminated soil remediation,which should also be ap.licable to a variety of other environmental contaminants.
