The scaling of the energetic cost of locomotion with body mass is well documented at the interspecific ***,methodological restrictions limit our understanding of the scaling of flight meta.o.ic rate(MR)in free-flying *** is particularly true at the intraspecific level,where variation in body mass and flight energetics may have direct consequences for the fitness of an *** applied a 13C stable isotope method to investigate the scaling of MR with body mass during free-flight in the beetle Ba.o.era *** species exhibits large intraspecific variation in adult body mass as a consequence of the environmental conditions during larval *** show that the flight-MR scales with body mass to the power of 0.57,with smaller conspecifics possessing up to 2.3 fold higher mass-specific flight MR than larger *** the scaling exponent of free-flight MR was found to be like that determined for tethered-flight,the energy expenditure during free-flight was more than 2.7 fold higher than for *** meta.o.ic cost of flight should therefore be studied under free-flight conditions,a requirement now enabled by the 13C technique described herein for insect flight.

The present study is a systematic effort to investigate the structure-sensitive magnetic parameters of Ce^(3+) substituted Ba-Sr hexaferrite na.o.rystals chemically formulated as Ba_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Ce_(x)Fe_(12-x)o_(19) where x=0.0-0.2 with Δx=*** hexaferrite powders were prepared using the sol-gel self-ignition route and structurally characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared *** creation of the M-type hexaferrite phase within the synthesized samples was revealed from the Rietveld refinement of the X-ray *** occurrence of a secondary phase of Ceo_(2) was revealed within the hexaferrites for the substitution,x> *** refined X-ray diffraction data were utilized to compute the lattice parameters,X-ray density,and lattice parameter *** crystal structure plotted from the refined XRD data reveals the occupancy of the ions at different lattice *** XPS data.o. the hexaferrite were analyzed to confirm the oxidation states of the constituent *** na.o.rystalline nature of the hexaferrites was revealed from the crystallite sizes calculated using Scherer's *** analysis of FTIR spectra confirms that only a fraction of Ce^(3+)accommodated in the lattice and the remaining Ce content reside in the form of the Ceo_(2) *** morphology of the hexaferrites was analyzed from the FESEM profiles of the ferrite *** magnetic behavior study was performed by analyzing the Curie temperature,hysteresis loops,and hyperfine interactions by means of susceptibility,V.S.M,and Mossbauer spectroscopy,*** hexaferrites with increasing coercivity,decreasing saturation magnetization,and decreasing Curie temperature are reported in the *** substituted Ce^(3+)ions inhibit the grain growth and create lattice imperfections giving rise to hexaferrites with tuned magnetic parameters suitable for different applications.

Rose chafer beetles(Protetia cuprea)are pollina.o.s as well as agricultural pests,flying between flowers and trees while foraging for pollen and *** the energy they expend on flying during foraging activity faces the challenge of measuring the meta.o.ic rate(MR)of free-flying insects in an open *** overcame this challenge by using the bolus injection of ^(13)C Na-bicarbonate technique to measure their meta.o.ic energy expenditure while flying in a large flight ***,we tracked the insects with high-speed cameras to extract their flight trajectory,from which we calculated the mechanical power invested in flying for each flight *** found that the chemical(meta.o.ic)energy input converted to mechanical flight energy output at a mean efficiency of 10.4%±5.2%,with a trend of increased efficiency in larger conspecifics(efficiency scaled with body mass to the power of 1.4).The transition in the summer from a diet of pollen to that of fruits may affect the energy budget available for *** ***,feeding on apples ad libitum,increased their body mass by an average of 6%in 2 *** to our calculations,such a meal can power a 630-m flight(assuming a carbohydrate assimilation efficiency of 90%).Pollen,with a low water and carbohydrate content but rich in proteins and lipids,has a higher ca.o.ic content and should assimilate differently when converting food to flight *** high cost of aerial locomotion is inherent to the foraging behavior of rose chafers,explaining their short flight bouts followed by prolonged feeding activity.

Short-term traffic forecasting is a key element in proactive traffic management,e.g.,mitigating the negative effect of impending congestion through appropriate capacity allocation at signalized *** this study,we develop a data-driven methodology for reliably and robustly predicting impending stable *** incorporating feature engineering techniques into an iterative machine learning process,we develop a prediction model that can be intuitively understood by traffic experts and is amenable to diagnostics during *** iterative machine learning process combines the embedded and filter approaches for feature selection with the use of expert knowledge to create aggregative input *** embedded approach is represented by application of a decision tree algorithm,while the filter approach is reflected in use of the mean decrease in accuracy output of a random forest algorithm for identifying expressive *** tested the methodology by applying it to field data from a sub-network in Tel *** demonstrated a reduction in the number of decision tree input variables from 66 raw variables to the five most effective aggregative ones,while achieving statistically significant improvement in all performance *** identification rate of stable congestion increased from 65%to 74%while the robustness of the results was enhanced:the standard deviations of the identification and false alarm rates fell from 8%to 3%,respectively,to 5%and 2%.

Benzene is a carcinogenic air pollutant for which European legislation has set an annual limit and criteria for the number of fixed monitoring sites within air quality networks(AQMN).However,due to the limited number of fixed sites for benzene measurement,exposure data are *** the relationship between benzene levels and other variables monitored within an AQMN,such as No_(2),o_(3),temperature,solar radiation,and accumulated precipitation,this study proposes an approach for estimating benzene air concentrations from the related *** the data.o. the a.o.ementioned variables from23 fixed stations during 2016-2017,the proposed approach was able to forecast benzene concentration for 2018 with high confidence,providing enriched data.o. benzene exposure and its ***,the spatial distribution of the estimated versus the most representative benzene levels was quite ***,an artificial neural network identified the most representative fixed benzene monitoring sites within the AQMN.
