Homocysteine and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Overweight or Obese Children and Adolescents

Introduction: Among the extrinsic factors, homocysteine (Hy) stands out, which is an intermediate amino acid of the intracellular metabolism of methionine involved in the process of cellular oxidation, which promotes the installation of atheromatous plaques and, therefore, is considered as an emerging cardiovascular risk factor. Objective: To evaluate the plasma homocysteine levels (Hy) in overweight or obese children and adolescents and their relation with cardiovascular risk factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2011 to May 2012 with overweight or obesity children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years followed at the Center for Childhood Obesity (IOC), Campina Grande-PB. A structured form was used to record demographic, socioeconomic and clinics variables and the patients underwent laboratory tests to define their lipid and glucose profiles and measurement of plasma Hy levels. Results: The study evaluated a total of 165 children and adolescents with mean age of 12.5 (±2.5) years;the majority were female (57.0%). Regarding the lipid profile, there was more individuals with low HDL cholesterol (88.5%). Plasma Hy levels were high in 24.2% of the sample. The mean Hy levels ranged from 4.3 to 18.9 μmol/L, being higher in males, obese adolescents and also in patients with high insulin levels and resistance. Conclusions: The results shown in this study emphasize the importance of detecting and controlling the plasma Hy levels as an independent cardiovascular risk factor, and the need for further studies to evaluate the clinical and biological factors related to alterations in its metabolism.

COMBINING SINGULAR SPECTRUM ANALYSIS AND PAR(p) STRUCTURES TO MOdeL WIND SPEED TIME SERIES

Singular spectrum analysis （SSA） is a technique that decomposes a time series into a set of components, such as, trend, harmonics, and residuals. Leaving out the residual components and adding up the others, the time series can be smoothed. This procedure has been used to model Brazilian electricity consumption and flow series. The PAR（p）, periodic autoregressive models, has been broadly used in modelling energy series in Brazil. This paper presents an approach of this decomposition method, by fitting the PAR（p）, considering its multivariate version known as multivariate SSA （MSSA）. The method was applied to a vector of two wind speed series recorded at two locations in the Brazilian Northeast region. The obtained results, when compared to the univariate decomposition of each series, were far superior, showing that the spatial correlation between the two series were considered by MSSA decomposition stage.

The resolution of inflammation is an active process,guided by specialized proresolution lipid mediators(SPMs).These mediators originate from polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as *** evidence suggests that the beneficial effects attributed to omega-3 are,at least in part,the result of the immunomodulatory action of the SPMs,which act systemically by overcoming inflammation and repairing tissue damage,without suppressing the immune *** studies suggest that an imbalance in the synthesis and/or activity of these compounds may be associated with the pathogenesis of several inflammatory conditions,such as inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Thus,this review highlights the advances made in recent years with regard to the endogenous synthesis and the biological role of lipoxins,resolvins,protectins,and maresins,as well as their precursors,in the regulation of inflammation;and provides an update on the participation of these mediators in the development and evolution of IBD and the therapeutic approaches that these immunomodulating substances are involved in this context.

The Anonnaceae family has 2,500 species and 135 genera, which has about 14 representatives of species in Brazil,including Pseudoxandra cuspidata. The objective of this research was to study the aqueous-acid extract of P. cuspidata, evaluatingits antioxidant, larvicidal, antimicrobial and cytotoxic potential. In the preliminary phytochemical analysis, there were positivity toorganicacids and alkaloids. Inhibitory Activity of EAA was 65% against DPPH. The AAE presented to A. Salina nauplii at LC50%of 600.79 μg/mL for a periodof 24 hours. In relation to larvicidal activity to Aedes aegypti intermediates, AAE presented the LC50%in 24 Hours of 475.91 ppm and 290.73 ppm in 48 Hours. Regarding the antimicrobial action, the EAA presented 50 mg/mL MIC forP. Aeruginosa and MBC at 100 mg/mL, and for S. aureus it presented MIC of 50 mg/mL and did not present MBC. This researchcharacterized the presence of alkaloids and organicacids present in the aqueousacid extract of P. cuspidata. The extract presentedlowtoxicity in relation to the microcrustacean A. salina. It also had a relevant antioxidant potential (65% of Inhibition),larvicidalaction considered effective, antimicrobialaction for both P. Aeruginosa and S. Aureus even did not present bactericidalaction.

Essential oils are secondary metabolites produced by plants, can be extracted from any organ such as： leaves, branches, roots, rhizomes, flowers, fruits, seeds, wood and stem bark. The present study aimed to analyze the compounds found in the essential oil of leafHancornia speciosa var. pubescens （C. Nees ＆ Mart.） MUll. Arg. （Apocynaceae）, popularly known as mangaba, and perform the soil chemical analysis of the occurrence of the same species. The oil was obtained by hydrodistillation in Clevenger from crushed leaves, their analysis was performed using the Shimadzu gas chromatograph model 2010 GC Ultra coupled to a mass spectrometer. The apofarnesol （48.45%）, naphthalene （4.84%）, ct-bisabolene （4.12%）, trans-i3-heptanone （2.34%）, spathulenol （1.48%）, cypermethrin were identified （1.35%） and malonic acid （1.34%）, which according to literature all these compounds have great insecticidal characteristics. Soil testing was performed according to the protocols of the S.L. Goi^nia/GO, which was found a soil poor in nutrient with acidic pH, these predominant features of the Cen：ado＇s soils, which can influence the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Concluding that Hancornia speciosa variety pubescens may have insecticidal activities.

Background: IgG4-related disease is a rare autoimmune condition that presents with lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and fibrosis in the organ affected. Isolated testicle involvement is uncommon and there are only a few cases reported in the literature. Case Presentation: We report a case of isolated chronic orchitis due to IgG4 hypersecretion in a 61-year-old patient that evolved with asymptomatic tumor-like mass growth and was treated with left orchiectomy. Histopathological study revealed orchitis related to IgG4 hypersecretion disease. Conclusion: IgG4-related disease can be manifested as a multi or single-organ disorder. Most diagnoses are made after surgery with histopathological analysis. Most of the cases in literature stand out the difficulty in diagnosis and necessity of high suspicion due to this condition’s similarity with neoplasm presentation.

Accuracy of gestalt perception of acute chest pain in predicting coronary artery disease

AIM To test accuracy and reproducibility of gestalt to predict obstructive coronary artery disease(CAD)in patients with acute chest *** We studied individuals who were consecutively admitted to our Chest Pain *** admission,investigators performed a standardized interview and recorded14 chest pain *** on these features,a cardiologist who was blind to other clinical characteristics made unstructured judgment of CAD probability,both numerically and *** the reference standard for testing the accuracy of gestalt,angiography was required to rule-in CAD,while either angiography or non-invasive test could be used to *** order to assess reproducibility,a second cardiologist did the same *** In a sample of 330 patients,the prevalence of obstructive CAD was 48%.Gestalt’s numerical probability was associated with CAD,but the area under the curve of0.61(95%CI:0.55-0.67)indicated low level of ***,categorical definition of typical chest pain had a sensitivity of 48%(95%CI:40%-55%)and specificity of 66%(95%CI:59%-73%),yielding a negligible positive likelihood ratio of 1.4(95%CI:0.65-2.0)and negative likelihood ratio of 0.79(95%CI:0.62-1.02).Agreement between the two cardiologists was poor in the numerical classification(95%limits of agreement=-71%to 51%)and categorical definition of typical pain(Kappa=0.29;95%CI:0.21-0.37).CONCLUSION Clinical judgment based on a combination of chest pain features is neither accurate nor reproducible in predicting obstructive CAD in the acute setting.

Influence of Concentrate in the Diet on the Metabolic, Biochemical, and Endocrine Profile of Buffalo Heifers

The objective of this study was to evaluate the profile of the main serum biochemical variables in buffalo heifers receiving diets with different concentrations of concentrate. Twenty buffalo heifers of the Murrah breed, aged six to eight months, were randomly assigned to four groups, with five replicates each, to be adapted to levels of 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of concentrate in the diet, composed of sugarcane (bulk) and concentrated feed based on wheat, corn, and soybean meal. The experimental diets were constituted in the proportion “bulk: concentrate”, based on dry matter, of “80:20” (Treatment 1), “60:40” (Treatment 2), “40:60” (Treatment 3), and “20:80” (Treatment 4). Biomarkers were evaluated for energy, protein, mineral, and endocrine profiles, as well as enzymatic activity. A positive linear effect was observed for Final Body Weight. In the energy profile, there was a positive linear effect for total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol and a quadratic effect for plasma glucose. In the protein profile, a quadratic effect was observed for the urea: creatinine ratio and a positive linear effect for total protein and albumin. For the enzymatic activity, only the variable gamma-glutamyltransferase presented a quadratic effect. In the mineral profile, a quadratic effect was observed for calcium levels and a positive linear effect for phosphorus levels and negative for chlorine levels. In the endocrine profile, no statistical differences were observed. Diet with until 80% of concentrate does not negatively influence biochemical parameters that represent the profile of energy, protein, mineral and thyroid hormones for growing buffalo heifers and favors the performance of the animals.

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is an infectious agent that occurs in small ruminants causing caseous lymphadenitis, and more rarely in humans causing lymphadenitis and pneumonia. The breeding small ruminants have great economic importance in Brazil. Rural farm workers and veterinary students who acquired this disease suffered from weakening symptoms for weeks, and the identification of the etiological agent was time-consuming and complex. Due to the low prevalence of case records, there is probably no available commercial diagnostic kit for C. pseudotuberculosis infection in humans. This study aimed to describe human seroreactivity to secreted antigens from C. pseudotuberculosis. Reactivity of serum from farm workers (n = 14), individuals who work with the bacillus at laboratory (n = 8) or individuals without contact (n = 25) was tested with secreted proteins from PAT10 strain of C. pseudotuberculosis by Western blotting. Samples of all (100%) farm workers showed reactivity to 31 kDa, 71 kDa and 164 kDa proteins, while laboratory workers showed 87.5%, 62.5 % and 37.5%, and no-contact 20%, 0% and 16%, respectively. All sera recognized the 275 kDa protein. Our data suggest that C. pseudotuberculosis secreted proteins are antigenic in humans and the recognition profiles allowed the identification of individuals with and without prior contact with this bacillus. This is the first paper which describes human reactivity to C. pseudotuberculosis in serum samples of workers in Brazil.
