Involvement of the nerve Fibers in the Human Skin neurofibromatosis

neurofibromatosis type 2 is a well known disease of the human skin. Its microscopic and ultramicroscopic features are also well defined. Aim： The aim of this work was to study the involvement of catecholaminergic nerve fibers in the human skin neurofibromatosis. Bioptic fragments of the human skin have been harvested from healthy and diseased subjects. On these specimens the following analysis were performed： 1） light microscopic observation after colouring with hematoxyline-Eosine. 2） lmmunochemical staining for Protein Gene Product 9.5.3） Fluorescent staining for catecholaminergic nerve fibers. 4） Quantitative analysis of images by means of the Quantimet analyzer Leica. 5） Statistical analysis of the quantitative morphological data comparing the healthy with diseased subjects. Comparing the light microscopy images in normal and pathological subjects the authors can affirm that the skin neurofibromatosis induces a strong decrease of the nerve fibers cutted in small pieces and destroyed. Also the catecholaminergic nerve fibers are strongly reduced and destroyed. Quantitative analysis of images and statistical analysis of the morphological data confirm that neurofibromatosis induces strong changes of the skin nerve fibers. The authors＇ results confirm that the neurofibromatosis type 2 induces an almost total destruction of the skin nerve fibers.

Prognostic Role of miR-205 in Early-Stage (T1n0) non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Background: Published data have shown that microRnAs (miRnAs) could play a potential role as diagnostic and prognostic indicators in cancers. Data for the predictive value of miRnA let-7, miR-21, and miR-205 are inconclusive. The aim of the present analysis was therefore to evaluate the expression and the prognostic role of the above mentioned miRnAs?in early-stage?(T1n0) nSCLC patients. Methods: Quantification of let-7g, miR-21, and miR-205 expression was carried out into 105 early-stage nSCLC by quantitative Real Time-PCR (qRT-PCR).?Results: a significant association between the low miR-205 expression and ADC histotype (p??0.0001) compared to SCC?was found;moreover, survival analysis showed thattumors with a high?miR-205 expression had a significantly shorter mean PFS and OS compared to the patients with a low expression of this miRnA (p = 0.02 and p = 0.03, respectively). no other statistically significant correlations were observed between the analysed miRnAs and the main clinico-pathological characteristics of the nSCLC patients. Conclusion: The results indicated that miR-205 could represent a useful marker in the prognostic management of the early-stage (T1n0) nSCLC patients.

Role of the diet as a link between oxidative stress and liver diseases

Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen(free radicals) and the body's ability(antioxidant capacity) to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or easily repair the resulting damage. An adequate diet, characterized by daily intake of foods associated with improvementsin the total antioxidant capacity of individuals and reduced incidence of diseases related to oxidation, can modulate the degree of oxidative stress. In fact, dietderived micronutrients may be direct antioxidants, or are components of antioxidant enzymes, leading to improvement of some indicators of hepatic function. However, although their increased dietary intake might be beneficial, literature data are still controversial. This review summarizes what is known about the effects of diet nutrients on oxidative stress, inflammation and liver function. Moreover, we have analyzed:(1) the main nutritional components involved in the production and/or removal of free radicals; and(2) the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of several hepatic diseases and related comorbidities.

Spatial Analysis of Federal Protected Areas and Priority Areas for Biodiversity Conservation in Brazil

This study presents a spatial analysis of priority areas for biodiversity conservation (PABCs) in Brazil and their coverage by federal protected areas as an indicator of the level of protection afforded to biodiversity in the country and the convergence of environmental protection policies in the sphere of federal government. Georeferenced data were processed using a geographic information system, enabling the calculation of areas, analyses of superimpositions, localizations, and the obtainment of other information using spatial features manipulated in this system. A comparative analysis is done of the PABCs mapped in two periods (2003 and 2007) to ascertain the evolution of this public policy instrument in detecting environmental priorities in protected areas. The improved coverage of PABCs by protected areas in the more recent mapping indicates a good convergence of environmental policies, which are enhanced by technical improvements to mapping procedures and methods for identifying such areas. As a result, the priority areas for biodiversity conservation could become a protected area regulated and recognized by the federal government.

Management of the Case of a Young Female Patient with Multiple Malignancies and Germline R24P CDKn2A Gene Mutation

The case of a young female patient with metachronous primary melanomas, advanced breast and pancreatic cancers is reported. The 5 different tumors diagnosed within six years, were managed with curative intent. Genetic analysis revealed the mutation of the R24P CDKn2A gene in a heterozygote form in both the patient and her father. Careful tertiary prevention during the follow-up of the patient is needed.

Seropositivity for Hepatitis B Virus, Vaccination Status and Response to Vaccine in a Cohort of Dental Students

Background: The development of a vaccine against hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been a major achievement in terms of prevention of HBV infection. To evaluate the immunological status against HBV of dental-profession students, we analysed the long-term immunogenicity and effectiveness of HBV vaccination in Italian dental students with different work seniorities, determining the influence of epidemiological variables on the immune response. Methods: This study, carried out from January 2014 to April 2016, involved 361 under- and post-graduate dental students attending the Second University of naples. HBV serum markers were determined and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with the level of long-term immunogenicity. Results: Of the 361 subjects evaluated, 15 (4.2%) declared no history of vaccination. All vaccinated subjects were HBsAg/anti-HBc negative, with 86 (24.9%) having an anti-HBs titre nger, more likely to be attending undergraduate dental school, and more likely to have been vaccinated in infancy. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that assessment of HBV serum markers in workers potentially exposed to hospital infections is useful to identify small numbers of unvaccinated subjects or vaccinated subjects with low antibody titre, all of whom should be referred for a booster series of vaccinations.

Robotic radiosurgery in pancreatic cancer: A systematic review

AIM: To present a systematic review of techniques and clinical ***: A systematic review of published literature was performed. Only studies reporting patient outcome after radiosurgery(single fraction) delivered with robotic devices [i.e.,robotic radiosurgery(RRS)] have been ***: A total of 96 patients from 5 studies were included. The studies are characterized by small series and different methods in terms of dose,target definition,combination with chemotherapy and/or standard fractionated radiotherapy and evaluation modalities. Preliminary results are positive in terms of tumor response(ORR = 56%) and local control of the tumor(crude rate of local progressions: 19.5%).Results for median overall survival(11.4 mo) seem comparable with the ones of prolonged chemoradiation(range: 8.6-13.0 mo). However,gastrointestinal toxicity seems to be the main limitation of RRS,especially at the duodenal ***: RRS allows for local treatment in a shortened time(1 fraction) compared to traditional treatments(about 1 mo),providing the possibility for an easy integration with systemic therapies. Preliminary results did not show any outcome differences compared to standard chemoradiation. Thus,further efforts to reduce gastrointestinal toxicity are strongly needed.

Larynx Organ Preservation in Patients with Hypopharyngeal-Laryngeal Cancer

Object: The therapeutic options for advanced laryngeal-hypopharyngeal cancer have broadened in the last decades, in the attempt to cure the cancer sparing laryngeal functions and to improve quality of life (functional surgery, chemo- radiotherapy, combined therapy). Methods: We propose a single-centre based retrospective study on the results of the treatment of larynx-hypopharynx cancer on the basis of the different therapies offered, focusing on advanced-stage cancers. Among 146 patients with laryngeal-hypopharyngeal cancer treated in the period 1999-2006, we focused on 64 patients with advanced stage resectable cancer. In the larynx cancer group ?n = 40-, 32 patients had surgery and 8 patients had CT-RT (refusal of laryngectomy or relative contraindications to surgery). In the hypopharynx cancer group ?n = 24-, 16 patients underwent surgery and 8 patients had CT-RT. The outcome measure considered has been overall survival. Results: Larynx cancer group. Overall survival: after surgery we observed a 3-year survival of 62%, and a 5-year survival of 44%, while after CT-RT we had a 3-year survival of 25% and a 5-year survival of 12%. Hypopharynx cancer group. Overall survival: surgery: 3-year survival: 40%, 5-year survival 32%;CT-RT: 3-year survival: 50%, 5-year survival: 34%. Conclusion: The results emphasize the use of larynx-preserving approaches for appropriately selected patients without a compromise in survival;in our case series, surgery had better outcome than CT-RT in advanced-stage larynx cancer;whilst no significant differences were observed in the treatment of hypopharynx cancer.

Objective:Pulmonary ground glass opacity(GGO)nodules represent a significant dilemma in oncology since its diagnosis in clinical practice has increased because of growing application of low dose computed tomography and screening *** aim of this study is to analyze the clinical and pathological features,the overall survival(OS)and disease-free interval(DFI)in surgically resected solitary ground glass nodules in order to assess the surgical treatment of ***:We retrospectively analyzed 49 patients(M/F=25/24)with a mean age of 67.7(range,40-81)years who underwent lung resection for solitary GGO nodules among 570 reviewed CT of patients who were treated for lung neoplasms between 2010 and *** cohort included 22 pure GGO nodules and 27 part solid GGOs(also called mixed GGOs).Results:Median maximum diameter of GGOs,defined as the largest axial diameter of the lesion on the lung-window setting,was 17(range,5-30)*** nodules were removed by wedge resection,segmentectomy,or lobectomy in 17(35%),9(18%),and 23(47%)cases,*** diagnosis was atypical adenomatous hyperplasia(AAH),adenocarcinoma in situ(AIS),minimally invasive adenocarcinoma(MIA),invasive adenocarcinoma(IA)or multifocal adenocarcinoma(MAC)in 4(8.2%),9(18.4%),11(22.4%),22(44.9%)and 3(6.1%)cases,*** a median follow up of 47 months the OS and DFI of the entire cohort was 46.3 and 43 months,*** histotype(P=0.008),the dimension of GGO(P=0.014)and the PET-SUV max(P=0.001)were independent prognostic factors of worse ***,age,previous lung surgery,type of surgical resection and the mediastinal lymph-node evaluation did not impact on OS and *** the 22 pure GGO nodules,we found a 3-year OS and DFI of 98%and 100%respectively,significantly different from 80%and 75%respectively of part-solid GGOs(log-rank P=0.043 and P=0.011).Conclusion:Our data suggest an indolent behaviour of tumour presenting as solitary GGO nodules,especially in case of
