Norepinephrine plays an important role in motor functional recovery after a brain injury caused by ferrous chloride.Inhibition of norepinephrine release by clonidine is correlated with motor deficits after motor cortex injury.The aim of this study was to analyze the role ofα-adrenergic receptors in the restoration of motor deficits in recovering rats after brain damage.The rats were randomly assigned to the sham and injury groups and then treated with the following pharmacological agents at 3 hours before and 8 hours,3 days,and 20 days after ferrous chloride-induced cortical injury:saline,clonidine,efaroxan(a selective antagonist ofα-adrenergic receptors)and clonidine+efaroxan.The sensorimotor score,the immunohistochemical staining forα-adrenergic receptors,and norepinephrine levels were evaluated.Eight hours post-injury,the sensorimotor score and norepinephrine levels in the locus coeruleus of the injured rats decreased,and these effects were maintained 3 days post-injury.However,20 days later,clonidine administration diminished norepinephrine levels in the pons compared with the sham group.This effect was accompanied by sensorimotor deficits.These effects were blocked by efaroxan.In conclusion,an increase inα-adrenergic receptor levels was observed after injury.Clonidine restores motor deficits in rats recovering from cortical injury,an effect that was prevented by efaroxan.The underlying mechanisms involve the stimulation of hypersensitiveα-adrenergic receptors and inhibition of norepinephrine activity in the locus coeruleus.The results of this study suggest thatαreceptor agonists might restore deficits or impede rehabilitation in patients with brain injury,and therefore pharmacological therapies need to be prescribed cautiously to these patients.

Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Vulva: Case report and Literature review

Background: Neuroendocrine neoplasms are those that develop from a neuroendocrine cell. They most commonly affect the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and pancreas, being rare conditions in the female genital tract. When present, these neoplasms often manifest with nonspecific signs and symptoms such as pain, itching, swelling, single-focus lesions, bleeding, and enlargement of inguinal lymph nodes, in addition to the presence of progressively enlarging vulvar nodules. Consequently, the diagnostic investigation involves histopathological examination and confirmation through immunohistochemistry. Objective: To present a comprehensive understanding of this rarely studied pathology. The primary objective is to provide valuable insights that could aid in the future development of universally applicable treatment guidelines. Case Presentation: A 57-year-old female, with no prior comorbidities, menopause at 36, who presented with a left vulvar nodule accompanied by intense pain and swelling, later diagnosed with small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the vulva. Conclusion: This case report highlights the importance of enhancing our knowledge regarding small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the vulva, given its scarcity in medical literature. The information presented here underscores the need for standardized diagnostic and treatment approaches, paving the way for future consensus on managing this uncommon but challenging neoplasm.

Coccidiosis is a disease caused by intracellular protozoan parasites, specifically belonging to the genus Eimeria. These parasites target the gastrointestinal tract in different types of hosts, causing sores in the intestinal lining. The presence of these lesions reduces the animal’s ability to digest and absorb nutrients, significantly impacting their overall performance. The current study aimed to explore the potential correlation between seasonal variations and the incidence of Eimeria spp-induced lesions in broiler chickens’ gastrointestinal tracts in Brazil from 2012 to 2018. A total of 8,607 broiler chickens, aged 14 to 42 days, were sampled from 103 poultry integrated companies in Brazil to conduct intestinal health examinations. The sampling process involved selecting 3 to 6 chickens from each poultry house for examination. The assessment included various abnormalities such as shedding of intestinal cells and excessive fluid and mucus presence, thickening and tension of the intestines, food movement, roughened mucosal surface resembling a Turkish towel in the small intestine, tissue death, duodenal inflammation, intestinal inflammation, gizzard erosion, presence of worms and bedding material, and ingestion of mealworms. During the seasons, winter exhibited the highest average occurrence of Eimeria maxima microorganisms at 52.83%, with E. acervulina following closely at 26.42% in second place. In spring, E. maxima had an occurrence of 11.31%, while in fall, E. tenella had the lowest occurrence at 6.74%. When analyzing the seasonal occurrence of Eimeria, it was observed that E. maxima micro was more common during winter compared to summer (P = 0.0491). However, no discernible variation was observed in the occurrence of the remaining species across different seasons. research findings suggest that subclinical coccidiosis is most prevalent during the winter season in Brazil. Personalized Federated Learning for Individual Consumer Load Forecasting

Installation of smart meters enables electricity retailers or consumers to implement individual load forecasting for demand response.An individual load forecasting model can be trained either on each consumer’s own smart meter data or the smart meter data of multiple consumers.The former practice may suffer from overfitting if a complex model is trained because the dataset is limited;the latter practice cannot protect the privacy of individual consumers.This paper tackles the dilemma by proposing a personalized federated approach for individual consumer load forecasting.Specifically,a group of consumers first jointly train a federated forecasting model on the shared smart meter data pool,and then each consumer personalizes the federated forecasting model on their own data.Comprehensive case studies are conducted on an open dataset of 100 households.results verify the proposed method can enhance forecasting accuracy by making full use of data from other consumers with privacy protection.

Enhanced biological wastewater treatment using sodium alginate-immobilized microorganisms in a fluidized bed reactor

In this study,a microbial consortium isolated from an activated sludge tank of a conventional wastewater treatment plant was immobilized using sodium alginate(SA)as a support material for contaminant biodegradation in wastewater.A volume of 500 mL of activated sludge was immobilized in the SA beads(with a mass concentration of 25 g/L).The resulting SA beads were characterized,introduced into a fluidized bed reactor,fed with 1000 mL of the sample,and characterized again after the treatment process.The SA-immobilized microorganisms were tested first for degradation of organic matter(expressed as chemical oxygen demand)and total phosphorous in domestic wastewater,achieving removal efficiencies of 71%and 93%,respectively,after 12 h.Subsequently,the SA-immobilized microorganisms were tested for degradation of a basic blue 9(BB9)textile dye in a condition that simulated textile wastewater.The efficiency of the BB9 degradation was found to be as high as 99.5%after 2 h.According to these results,SA-immobilized microorganisms were found to be an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative for treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater effluents.

Dosing low-level ferrous iron in coagulation enhances the removal of micropollutants, chlorite and chlorate during advanced water treatment

Drinking water utilities are interested in upgrading their treatment facilities to enhance micropollutant removal and byproduct control.Pre-oxidation by chlorine dioxide(ClO_(2))followed by coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation and advanced oxidation processes(AOPs)is one of the promising solutions.However,the chlorite(ClO_(2)^(-))formed from the ClO_(2) preoxidation stage cannot be removed by the conventional coagulation process using aluminum sulfate.ClO_(2)^(–)negatively affects the post-UV/chlorine process due to its strong radical scavenging effect,and it also enhances the formation of chlorate(ClO_(3)^(–)).In this study,dosing micromolar-level ferrous iron(Fe(II))into aluminum-based coagulants was proposed to eliminate the ClO_(2)^(–)generated from ClO_(2) pre-oxidation and benefit the post-UV/chlorine process in radical production and ClO_(3)^(–)reduction.results showed that the addition of 52.1-μmol/L FeSO_(4) effectively eliminated the ClO_(2)^(-)generated from the pre-oxidation using 1.0 mg/L(14.8μmol/L)of ClO 2.reduction of ClO_(2)^(-)increased the degradation rate constant of a model micropollutant(carbamazepine)by 55.0%in the post-UV/chlorine process.The enhanced degradation was verified to be attributed to the increased steady-state concentrations of HO^(-)·and ClO_(2)·by Fe(II)addition.Moreover,Fe(II)addition also decreased the ClO_(3)^(–)formation by 53.8%in the UV/chlorine process and its impact on the formation of chloroorganic byproducts was rather minor.The findings demonstrated a promising strategy to improve the drinking water quality and safety by adding low-level Fe(II)in coagulation in an advanced drinking water treatment train.

Immunological mechanisms of fecal microbiota transplantation in recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection

Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)is a successful method for treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile(C.difficile)infection(rCDI)with around 90%efficacy.Due to the relative simplicity of this approach,it is being widely used and currently,thousands of patients have been treated with FMT worldwide.Nonetheless,the mechanisms underlying its effects are just beginning to be understood.Data indicate that FMT effectiveness is due to a combination of microbiological direct mechanisms against C.difficile,but also through indirect mechanisms including the production of microbiota-derived metabolites as secondary bile acids and short chain fatty acids.Moreover,the modulation of the strong inflammatory response triggered by C.difficile after FMT seems to rely on a pivotal role of regulatory T cells,which would be responsible for the reduction of several cells and soluble inflammatory mediators,ensuing normalization of the intestinal mucosal immune system.In this minireview,we analyze recent advances in these immunological aspects associated with the efficacy of FMT.

Oxidative effects of glyphosate on the lipophobic intracellular environment in the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris

The studied hypothesis is that the herbicide glyphosate(GLY)can affect the oxidative balance in the hydrophobic intracellular medium in non-target Chlorella vulgaris cells.Analytical GLY and roundUp(rUP)supplementation,affected the growth profile.A significant 42%decrease in the cellular biomass in stationary(St)phase was observed in cultures supplemented with either 5μM of GLY or rUP,as compared to control cultures.The treatment with 0.3μM of GLY generated non-significant effects on the oxidation rate of 2’,7’dichlorofluorescein diacetate(DCFH-DA),neither in exponential(Exp)nor in St phase of development,as compared to control cultures.However,the treatment with either 5μM GLY or 0.3 and 5μM rUP lead to a significant decrease in the DCFH-DA oxidation rate,as compared to control cultures.The lipid radical(Lr●)generation rate,detected by Paramagnetic resonance Spectroscopy(EPr),was significantly increased in the presence of rUP,in Lag and Exp phase of growth.The non-enzymatic antioxidants,α-Tocopherol(α-T)andβ-Carotene(β-C),are aimed to protect membranes against the damage produced by the radical reactions.The content ofβ-C was not significantly affected,as compared to control cultures,by any of the treatments,in both growth phases of cellular development.The content ofα-T was significantly decreased by the supplementation with either 0.3 or 5μM of rUP or 5μM GLY.The Lr●/α-T ratio,used as indicator of the oxidative balance in the hydrophobic cellular media,was significantly different between samples obtained from control and rUP-exposed microalgae in both,Exp and St phase of development,with either 0.3 or 5μM rUP.The data presented here showed evidence that suggested that oxidative balance in the hydrophobic environment was affected by either GLY or rUP.

Finding a role for cancer vaccines in pancreatic cancer:a model of resilience

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy with folinic acid,5-fluorouracil,irinotecan and oxaliplatin(FOLFIrINOX)or gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel(Gem-nabP)for 4 to 6 months,potentially followed by chemoradiotherapy and an attempt for surgical resection for select patients,represents the multidisciplinary care standard for borderline resectable(BrPC)and locally advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(LAPC)patients with good performance status(1,2).With neoadjuvant therapy,resection rates average 65%and survival ranges from 22-29 months for BrPC,whereas LAPC patients have resection rates of 15-20%and survival of 16-24 months,respectively(3-5).

Early detection of tomato bacterial canker by reflectance indices

Early detection of infected asymptomatic plants could prevent the dissemination of tomatobacterial canker throughout the crop and, thus, reduce associated economic losses. reflectance spectroscopy has been proposed for the detection of diseases in plants, mainlycaused by foliar fungal pathogens. In contrast, bacterial canker is a vascular disease thatdoes not produce visible foliar symptoms until it is too late to avoid contagion to otherplants. The effects of the disease on the conductivity of the xylem have an impact onthe water content of the leaves;initially, a subtle effect that cannot be assessed with thenaked eye but can be evaluated by reflectance spectroscopy. The objective of this workwas to identify indices, based on the reflectance spectral signature of the plants, for thedetection of tomato plants affected by bacterial canker prior to the appearance of symptoms. To verify that the proposed methodology is applicable to a broad range of tomatogenotypes, two experiments were carried out with different tomato cultivars grown in potsand another on the ground in a greenhouse. Plants were inoculated with the pathogenicbacteria and the reflectance spectrum of the apical leaflet of two leaves per plant wereobtained before symptoms expression;several spectral indices were calculated from thereflectance spectra. Three indices, of the shortwave-infrared zone, allowed the detectionof bacterial canker inoculated plants in a fast and non-destructive way, up to one weekbefore symptoms were visible: Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Simple ratioof Water Index (SrWI) and Water Index 1 180 (WI1180). Our research demonstrates, forthe first time, the usefulness of spectral indices sensitive to water content for the identifi-cation of diseased plants. These indices arise as a promising tool for the early detection ofvascular plant diseases, that could be integrated into sustainable management plans.
