Aeration and sawdust application effects as structural material in the bioremediation of clayey acid soils contaminated with diesel oil

Soil contamination, due to the leakage of petroleum or its by-products, is a reason for concern nowadays. Technologies, such as bioremediation, have been developed to remove these pollutants from the environment. This paper aims to evaluate the bioremediation of clayey acid soils contaminated with diesel oil, comparing the effect of aeration use and the addition of different sawdust ratios (5% and 10%) as bulking material. This research was developed in three phases, with experiments of (a) natural attenuation (exclusively natural processes), (b) sawdust-amended soil and (c) aeration combined with sawdust addition. The manometric respirometry test was applied to monitor CO2 production during biodegradation experiments and sodium hydroxide (naOH) was used as an absorbent solution. The contamination of the samples was carried out by the addition of diesel oil (5% w/w (gg-1)) into the soil. The results indicated that natural attenuation presented a slower bioremediation process when compared to the treatments with sawdust addition. The addition of 5% of sawdust was beneficial to the microbial activity of the soil, but a proportion above 5% caused a negative effect on the samples, reducing the microbial activity. Statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis test) showed significant oil removals on experiments with the combination of sawdust and aeration. The aeration was considered the main agent in increasing oil biodegradation in the soil. The degradation rate reactions followed a zero-order linear model. The highest contaminant degradation rate was observed in the samples with 5% of sawdust and aeration (24.79 mgO2 kg-1dry soil day-1), which also improved microbial activity and diesel oil removal.

AIM： TO assess the effect of iron reduction after phlebotomy in rats with ＂normal＂ hepatic iron concentration （HIC） on the progression of hepatic fibrosis, as a result of bile duct ligation （BDL）. METHODS： Rats underwent phlebotomy before or after sham operation or BDL. Animals undergone only BDL or sham operation served as controls. Two weeks after surgery, indices of hepatic damage and fibrosis were evaluated. RESULTS： Phlebotomy lowered HIC. Phlebotomy after BDL was associated with body weight increase, lower hepatic weight, less portal hypertension, less periportal necrosis, less portal inflammation, lower hepatic activity index score and higher albumin levels. On the other hand, phlebotomy before BDL was associated with body weight decrease and hepatic activity index score increase. Phlebotomy after sham operation was not associated with any hepatic or systemic adverse effects. COnCLUSIOn： Reduction of HIC after induction of liver damage may have beneficial effects in BDL rats. However, iron deficiency could induce impairment of liver function and may make the liver more susceptible to insults like BDL.

Drinking water utilities are interested in upgrading their treatment facilities to enhance micropollutant removal and byproduct ***-oxidation by chlorine dioxide(ClO_(2))followed by coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation and advanced oxidation processes(AOPs)is one of the promising ***,the chlorite(ClO_(2)^(-))formed from the ClO_(2) preoxidation stage cannot be removed by the conventional coagulation process using aluminum ***_(2)^(–)negatively affects the post-UV/chlorine process due to its strong radical scavenging effect,and it also enhances the formation of chlorate(ClO_(3)^(–)).In this study,dosing micromolar-level ferrous iron(Fe(II))into aluminum-based coagulants was proposed to eliminate the ClO_(2)^(–)generated from ClO_(2) pre-oxidation and benefit the post-UV/chlorine process in radical production and ClO_(3)^(–)*** showed that the addition of 52.1-μmol/L FeSO_(4) effectively eliminated the ClO_(2)^(-)generated from the pre-oxidation using 1.0 mg/L(14.8μmol/L)of ClO *** of ClO_(2)^(-)increased the degradation rate constant of a model micropollutant(carbamazepine)by 55.0%in the post-UV/chlorine *** enhanced degradation was verified to be attributed to the increased steady-state concentrations of HO^(-)·and ClO_(2)·by Fe(II)***,Fe(II)addition also decreased the ClO_(3)^(–)formation by 53.8%in the UV/chlorine process and its impact on the formation of chloroorganic byproducts was rather *** findings demonstrated a promising strategy to improve the drinking water quality and safety by adding low-level Fe(II)in coagulation in an advanced drinking water treatment train.

Standardization of choroidal thickness measurements using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography

AIM: To describe and evaluate a standardized protocol for measuring the choroidal thickness(Ch T) using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography(EDI OCT).METHODS: Single 9 mm EDI OCT line scans across the fovea were used for this study. The protocol used in this study classified the EDI OCT images into four groups based on the appearance of the choroidal-scleral interface and suprachoroidal space. Two evaluation iterations of experiments were performed: first, the protocol was validated in a pilot study of 12 healthy eyes. Afterwards, the applicability of the protocol was tested in 82 eyes of patients with diabetes. Inter-observer and intra-observer agreements on image classifications were performed using Cohen’s kappa coefficient(κ). Intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) and Bland-Altman’s methodology were used for the measurement of the Ch ***: There was a moderate(κ=0.42) and perfect(κ =1) inter- and intra-observer agreements on image classifications from healthy eyes images and substantial(κ =0.66) and almost perfect(κ =0.86) agreements from diabetic eyes images. The proposed protocol showed excellent inter- and intra-observer agreements for the Ch T measurements on both, healthy eyes and diabetic eyes(ICC >0.90 in all image categories). The Bland-Altman plot showed a relatively large Ch T measurement agreement in the scans that contained less visible choroidal outer boundary. COnCLUSIOn: A protocol to standardize Ch T measurements in EDI OCT images has been developed;the results obtained using this protocol show that the technique is accurate and reliable for routine clinical practice and research.

AIMTo develop a simplified bioartificial liver (BAL) device prototype, suitable to use freshly and preserved liver Microorgans (LMOs) as biological component. METHODSThe system consists of 140 capillary fibers through which goat blood is pumped. The evolution of hematocrit, plasma and extra-fiber fluid osmolality was evaluated without any biological component, to characterize the prototype. LMOs were cut and cold stored 48 h in BG35 and ViaSpan® solutions. Fresh LMOs were used as controls. After preservation, LMOs were loaded into the BAL and an ammonia overload was added. To assess LMOs viability and functionality, samples were taken to determine lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and ammonia detoxification capacity. RESULTSThe concentrations of ammonia and glucose, and the fluids osmolalities were matched after the first hour of perfusion, showing a proper exchange between blood and the biological compartment in the minibioreactor. After 120 min of perfusion, LMOs cold preserved in BG35 and ViaSpan® were able to detoxify 52.9% ± 6.5% and 53.6% ± 6.0%, respectively, of the initial ammonia overload. no significant differences were found with Controls (49.3% ± 8.8%, P ® cold preserved LMOs, respectively (n = 6, P COnCLUSIOnThis prototype relied on a simple design and excellent performance. It’s a practical tool to evaluate the detoxification ability of LMOs subjected to different preservation protocols.

Partial flap loss(skin involved)or fat necrosis following autologous breast reconstruction remains a dreaded postoperative complication despite significant advances in microsurgical *** strategies have been proposed in the preoperative and intraoperative period to prevent this complication ranging from preoperative imaging,intra-operative tissue perfusion assessment,appropriate perforator selection(location and number),maximizing inflow and outflow with additional anastomoses and/or pedicles,and minimizing ischemia *** management of partial flap loss(when there is skin involvement)and fat necrosis remains a challenge,with very little published data focusing on classification,timing,and *** intervention versus close observation may depend on multiple patient factors and the degree or volume of *** intervention options include hyperbaric oxygen therapy,fat aeration with a needle,liposuction,fat grafting,addition of another flap or implant,depending on the nature of the *** review summarizes the current evidence for each of these strategies to help the current surgeon understand their options in preventing and managing patients suffering from partial flap loss.

Early detection of infected asymptomatic plants could prevent the dissemination of tomatobacterial canker throughout the crop and, thus, reduce associated economic losses. Reflectance spectroscopy has been proposed for the detection of diseases in plants, mainlycaused by foliar fungal pathogens. In contrast, bacterial canker is a vascular disease thatdoes not produce visible foliar symptoms until it is too late to avoid contagion to otherplants. The effects of the disease on the conductivity of the xylem have an impact onthe water content of the leaves;initially, a subtle effect that cannot be assessed with thenaked eye but can be evaluated by reflectance spectroscopy. The objective of this workwas to identify indices, based on the reflectance spectral signature of the plants, for thedetection of tomato plants affected by bacterial canker prior to the appearance of symptoms. To verify that the proposed methodology is applicable to a broad range of tomatogenotypes, two experiments were carried out with different tomato cultivars grown in potsand another on the ground in a greenhouse. Plants were inoculated with the pathogenicbacteria and the reflectance spectrum of the apical leaflet of two leaves per plant wereobtained before symptoms expression;several spectral indices were calculated from thereflectance spectra. Three indices, of the shortwave-infrared zone, allowed the detectionof bacterial canker inoculated plants in a fast and non-destructive way, up to one weekbefore symptoms were visible: normalized Difference Water Index (nDWI), Simple Ratioof Water Index (SRWI) and Water Index 1 180 (WI1180). Our research demonstrates, forthe first time, the usefulness of spectral indices sensitive to water content for the identifi-cation of diseased plants. These indices arise as a promising tool for the early detection ofvascular plant diseases, that could be integrated into sustainable management plans.

AIMTo verify how malnutrition is related to health-related quality of life (HRQL) impairment in patients with cirrhosis. METHODSData was retrospectively abstracted from medical records and obtained by direct interview. We included patients with cirrhosis from any etiology, evaluated at the Liver Clinic from Gastroenterology Department in a tertiary healthcare center, from June 2014 to June 2016. Child-Pugh score, data about complications, and demographic, clinical and anthropometric characteristics of patients were obtained. nutritional status was evaluated by the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). HRQL was evaluated through the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire. Patients were requested to assess their global HRQL with the following code: 0 = impairment of HRQL, when it was compared with other healthy subjects; 1 = good HRQL, if it was similar to the quality of life of other healthy subjects. To compare the primary outcome between malnourished and well-nourished groups, the χ2 test, Fisher’s exact test or Student’s t-test were used, based on the variable type. Associations between predictor variables and deterioration of HRQL were determined by calculating the hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval using Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTSA total of 127 patients with cirrhosis were included, and the mean age was 54.1 ± 12.3 years-old. According to Child-Pugh scoring, 25 (19.7%) were classified as A (compensated), 76 (59.8%) as B, and 26 (20.5%) as C (B/C = decompensated). According to SGA, 58 (45.7%) patients were classified as well-nourished. Sixty-nine patients identified HRQL as good, and 76 patients (59.8%) perceived impairment of their HRQL. Multivariate analysis to determine associations between predictor variables and self-perception of an impairment of HRQL found strong association with malnutrition (P P COnCLUSIOnMalnutrition is a key factor related to impairment of HRQL in patients with cirrhosis.

The present work investigates the entropy and the excitation inversion of a coupled system that consists of a qubit represented by a Cooper pair box （CPB） interacting with a transmission line working as a circuit quantum eleetrodynamics （CQED）. The proposed scheme uses the Buck-Sukumar model with a time dependent frequency in the presence of losses to study the evolution of the entropy and the excitation inversion of the system. We have shown that the CQED is much more sensitive to the presence of losses than the CPB. The results also show that it is possible to monitor properties of the subsystems through appropriate choices of the time-dependent parameters.
