Solid Particle Erosion of AISI 304 SS Caused by Alumina Particles

This research work was carried out with the aim of continuing to expand knowledge on the behaviour of AISI 304 stainless steel against solid particle erosion. In this particular case, the steel was subjected to the impact of alumina particles, which are hard abrasives with irregular and angular shapes. Different characterization techniques were applied to gain a better understanding of alumina. For instance, particle size distribution was obtained using the Analysette 28 Image Sizer and the particle size was between 300 - 400 µm. SEM and EDS analysis were used to know the morphology and chemical composition of both the abrasive particles and AISI 304 stainless steel. Additionally, mechanical properties values such as the hardness and Young’s modulus of AISI 304 steel were attained using a Berkovich indenter (model TTX-NHT, CSM Instruments). On the other hand, two tests were carried out for each impact angle used, 30˚, 45˚, 60˚ and 90˚, with a particle velocity of 24 ± 2 m/s and an abrasive flow rate of 63 ± 0.5 g/min, employing a test rig based on ASTM G76-95 standard. SEM images using two detectors, Backscattered Electron Detector (BED) and Low Electron Detector (LED), were employed to identify the wear mechanisms on the AISI 304 eroded surfaces at 30˚ and 90˚. Finally, the erosion rates of AISI 304 compared to those results reached by AISI 1018 steel and AISI 420 stainless steel tested under identical conditions in previous works.

Renewable resources based polymers provides a sustainable alternative to petroleum derived polymeric *** a part of our series on synthesis of vanillin based renewable polymers,we report the synthesis of poly(hydrovanilloin-furfural)[poly(HVL-Fur)]and poly(hydrovanilloin–5-hydromethylfurfural)[poly(HVL-5-HMF)].Vanillin was dimerized to a mixtures of meso/DL-hydrovanilloins with 94%meso product by electrochemical reductive coupling in aqueous sodium hydroxide using lead electrodes in quantitative *** sodium hydroxide catalyzed condensation of hydrovanilloin with furfural in water at 80℃for 72 h was used to synthesize poly(HVL-Fur)with Mw=8600 g mol^(−1),PDI=1.28 in 78%***,condensation of hydrovanilloin with 5-hydroxymethylfurfural at 80℃for 48 h produced poly(HVL-5-HMF)with Mw=12,100 g mol−1,PDI=1.27 in 68%***(HVL-Fur)and poly(HVL-5-HMF)showed similar Tg values of 59℃and 60℃,respectively;whereas melting behaviors are dissimilar with Tm 171℃–173℃and 148℃–182℃,respectively.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized heterogeneous catalysts have been evaluated in the catalytic dehydration of C(,monosaccharides into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF) using dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO)as *** commercial resin Amberlyst-70 was the most active catalyst,which was ascribed to its higher concentration of sulfonic acid sites as compared with the other catalysts,and it gave 93 mol%yield of HMF from fructose in 1 *** glucose as the starting material,which is a much more difficult reaction,the reaction conditions(time,temperature,and catalyst loading) were optimized for Amberlyst-70 by a response surface methodology,which gave a maximum HMF yield of 33 mol%at 147 °C with 23 wt%catalyst loading based on glucose and 24 h reaction *** promotes the dehydration of glucose into anhydroglucose,which acts as a reservoir of the substrate to facilitate the production of HMF by reducing side *** reuse without a regeneration treatment showed a gradual but not very significant decay in catalytic activity.

A POSTERIORI ERROR ANALYSIS OF A FULLY-MIXED FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FOR A TWO-DIMENSIONAL FLUID-SOLID INTERACTION PROBLEM

In this paper we develop an a posteriori error analysis of a fully-mixed finite element method for a fluid-solid interaction problem in 2D. The media are governed by the elas-todynamic and acoustic equations in time-harmonic regime, respectively, the transmission conditions are given by the equilibrium of forces and the equality of the corresponding normal displacements, and the fluid is supposed to occupy an annular region surrounding the solid, so that a Robin boundary condition imitating the behavior of the sommerfeld condition is imposed on its exterior boundary. Dual-mixed approaches are applied in both domains, and the governing equations are employed to eliminate the displacenent a of the solid and the pressure p of the fluid. In addition, since both transmission conditions become essential, they are enforced weakly by means of two suitable lahrange multipliers The unknowns of the solid and the fluid are then approximated by a conforming galerkin scheme defined in terms of PEERS elements in the solid, Raviart-Thomas of lowest order in the fluid, and continuous piecewise linear functions on the boundary, As the main con-tribution of this work, we derive a reliable and efficient residual-based a posteriori error estimator for the aforedescribed coupled problem. Some numerical results confirming the properties of the estimator are also reported.

The paper discusses the results of a field study carried out in four cities in Mexico： Hermosillo, Mexicali, Merida and Colima, during the warmest seasons of 2006-2007. The survey is according to the adaptive approach of thermal comfort. The cities＇ climates are hot dry, hot sub-humid and hot humid. The respondents were inhabitants of low cost housings without air conditioning. The research was performed during warm seasons and according to ISO 10551. The measurements were processed by the common method of linear regression and also by alternative methods, useful for asymmetric climates. Individuals declared comfort at very high temperatures, either high or low humidity, therefore, the resulting neutral temperatures are higher than 30 ℃, except in Colima （28.8 ℃）. The upper limits of comfort ranges achieved temperatures up to 35 ℃. The results suggest how great is the capacity of humans to adapt to conditions as extreme as those measured in the study.

Photomechanical Ablation of 304L Stainless Steel, Aluminum Oxide (Al₂O₃) Thin Film, and Pure Silicon

Recently, a number of studies have focused on micro-manufacturing processes, which find use in a variety of applications, including the production of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). The process of ablation in materials is mainly governed by the laser source and scanning speed. The rate of material ablation is influenced by chemical and physical properties. In this work, the energy from a CO2 laser was used to ablate three different materials, namely, stainless steel 304L, a thin film of amorphous aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and pure silicon, due to their wide use in MEMS technology. The laser parameters used were an average power of 18 W and a spot size of 200 μm. The maximum depth during the photomechanical ablation process was 72 μm in the case of 304L steel and 77 μm in the case of the Al2O3 thin film for a scan rate of 24 mm/min. However, at the same scan rate, silicon did not exhibit any penetration. As expected, while increasing scanning speed the ablation depth decreases due to reduced interaction time between laser and material. The theoretical ytterbium fiber laser shown in this study can thus be employed in the manufacturing of a wide variety of materials used in the production of MEMS as well as those used in clean energy technologies.

Endotoxins(also known as lipopolysaccharides(LPS)) are undesirable by-products of recombinant proteins,purified from Escherichia *** can be considered stable under a wide range of temperature and pH,making their removal one of the most difficult tasks in downstream processes during protein *** inherent toxicity of LPS makes their removal an important step for the application of these proteins in several biological assays and for a safe parenteral *** metal affinity chromatography(IMAC) enables the affinity interactions between the metal ions(immobilized on the support through the chelating compound) and the target molecules,thus enabling high-efficiency separation of the target molecules from other components present in a *** chromatography is applied with Ca2+-iminodiacetic acid(IDA) to remove most of the LPS contaminants from the end product(more than90%).In this study,the adsorption of LPS on an IDA-Ca2+ was *** adsorption Freundlich isotherm of LPS-IDA-Ca2+ provides a theoretical basis for LPS *** was found that LPS is bound mainly by interactions between the phosphate group in LPS and Ca2+ ligands on the *** factors such as pH(4.0 or 5.5) and ionic strength(1.0 mol/L) are essential to obtain effective removal of LPS for contaminant levels between endotoxin' concentration values less than100 EU/mL and 100 000 EU/*** new protocol represents a substantial advantage in time,effort,and production costs.

Optimal Parameters for in Vitro Development of the Fungus Hydrocarbonoclastic Penicillium sp.

México has extensive areas that have been impacted by oil spills for several decades. Current bioremediation technologies mostly used microorganisms to decontaminate sites with hydrocarbons. This research evaluated the conditions for the optimal development of the strain of a hydrocarbonoclastic fungus, which was found in samples of soil contaminated with 4.0 × 105 mg·kg-1 of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). A completely randomized experimental design with a 3 × 3 × 4 factor arrangement was used: three levels of temperature (T1 = 29℃, T2 = 35℃ and T3 = 40℃), three of pH (pH1 = 3.5, pH2 = 5.0 and pH3 = 6.0) and four nutrients (N1 = Urea, N2 = Triple-17, N3 = Nitrophoska-Blue and N4 = Pure-Salts). Total fungi were isolated from the sampled soil and were sown in a combined carbon medium for hydrocarbonoclastic fungi and a strain was selected to be adapted to a liquid mineral medium. The selected strain was classified as Penicillium sp. Analyses of variance and mean tests were performed, using the SPSS-11.0 statistical software. The microorganisms showed the highest population growth in the treatment N2pH2T1, which reached a value of 2.1 × 106 CFU·mL-1 in a biorreactor. To reach it, by bioaugmentation, the same development of Penicillium sp. in a conditioned soil would allow to implement a bioremediation strategy with great potential to retrieve soil contaminated with hydrocarbons both in Tabasco and in general in Mexico.

Neoadjuvant Therapy for Locally Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma with Sorafenib in a Reference Center in Mexico

Background: neo - adjuvant therapy is usually indicated in locally advanced tumors, the aim is to decrease the tumoral burden and enhance overall survival. Renal cell carcinoma is a chemo and radio resistant neoplasm and this type of approach is not as effective as in other solid tumors. On the other hand immunotherapy is indicated in metastatic disease, demonstrating a better overall survival. Sorafenib is an antiangiogenic drug approved for locally advanced or metastatic RCC. We postulated that it can be used in a neoadjuvant way to decrease the vascularization of selected tumors. Report of the case: 57 years old male referred to our service with a right renal mass and metastatic disease to lumbar spine and suprarenal gland. He was treated with three months of sorafenib previous to the surgery. Results: The patient went into surgery three months after initiating the antiangiogenic drug, during the surgery we found less neo-formance vessels;the dissection was subjectively easier, due to peri-renal edema. The pathologic analysis of the specimen was renal cell carcinoma. Interestingly, 40% of central ischemic (coagulative) necrosis was found. Conclusion: There are no neoadjuvant drugs accepted for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma;using an antiagiogenic drug to decrease the vascular burden characteristic of this type of tumors could be a viable option in selected cases. We used a lower dose of the drug with an acceptable safety profile.
