This article presents a historical perspective of foundational studies utilizing near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)to measure the hemodynamics,oxygenation,and activation of the human brain cortex during cognitive tasks,called functional NIRS(fNIRS).It discusses studies representative of the diagnostic power and potential that fNIRS has shown for providing increased understanding of cognitive changes with aging and *** concludes by discussing challenges that continue to confront the implementation of NIRS and fNIRS in clinical and translational research,in particular,the challenges to measure cognitive function and impairment in aged,chronically ill,and fragile subjects with or without *** is written specifically in memoriam,honoring Britton Chance,therefore papers authored by him and his collaborative research family are weighted to illustrate the significant foundation and legacy he has left to this world.

Biological properties of differently-aged human keratinocytes:population doubling time growth curve and cell cycle analysis

Objective To explore the biological properties of keratinocytes from differently-aged healthy human beings. methods Keratinocytes from fetus,teenager and middle-aged groups were separated and cultured. The population doubling time (PDT) and cell growth curve in different cells were compared,and the cell cycles were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results ① In primary culture of keratinocytes,the adherence time in middle-aged group was longer than that in fetus and teenager groups. However,all cell morphology showed no obvious differences. In subculture of keratinocytes,with donator’s age increasing,time of cell adherence prolonged,passage number decreased and differences in cell morphology were obvious. ② The average PDT of keratinocytes was shorter in fetus group than in teenager and middle-aged groups. But difference in cell growth curve between different passages was not observed. ③ Keratinocytes showed G2/m period in fetus group but G0/G1 period in teenager and middle-aged groups mainly. Conclusion As age increases,the biological properties of keratinocytes change obviously.

Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating: Longer Term Perspectives of Adults with Type 1 Diabetes

Aim:?To explore the longer term blood glucose self-monitoring outcomes and frequency of monitoring for outpatients with diabetes type 1 after completion of the Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) course. The hypothesis was that DAFNE outcomes would differ according to frequency of glucose ***:?A?sequential data-triangulation design using existing?baseline (T0) and 12-months (T12)?DAFNE course data and interview data from 12 randomly selected participants who had completed the course two years ago.?Results: Age range was 23 to 70 years with HbA1c 6.1% to 12.6% at T0?and 6.1% to 11.4% at T12. Comparisons of HbA1c, PAID, HAD subscales?anxiety?and?depression,?and covariate data between T0?and T12indicatedsignificant reductions in the mean depression and PAID scores (both?P?mes or three or more times per day, changes were not significantly different. For both groups, the trend between T0?and T12?was downwards for change in mean blood glucose level and all survey scales. The proportion of all participants with T12?HbA1c at or below their T0?value was greater than 50% (Proportion = 69%, 95% CI: 56% - 79%) but only the highest HbA1c tertile group showed a significant difference (P?= 0.003). There was an average decrease in the incidence of hypoglycaemic events of 0.6 overall: The greatest change was for the high HbA1c tertile with a mean decrease of 0.8. The interview data suggested that DAFNE graduates experimented more with food, exercise, and insulin;gained knowledge;learnt personal body needs;increased awareness of blood glucose level;gained confidence and improved their quality of life. Conclusions: There was insufficient evidence to conclude that frequency of blood glucose monitoring influenced metabolic control. 为确保环境氡浓度监测结果可靠,探讨RAD7测氡仪在不同工作模式下连续监测结果之间的差异是十分必要的。根据RAD7在不同工作模式下的测氡原理,利用正常模式下的氡浓度监测数据,提出了吸气模式下的氡浓度计算公式,并对这两种模式下所得结果进行了比较分析。结果表明,在100 Bq·m^(-3)左右氡浓度水平下单一测量周期时间内,两种模式所得氡浓度的最大相对偏差接近60%;当连续监测时间短于6 h,两种模式测量结果的相对合成扩展不确定度均超过25%,不能满足相关标准要求;当连续监测时间超过12 h,两种模式之间氡浓度均值差异没有统计学显著性(p>0.05)。为缩小不同工作模式下RAD7测量结果差异,设置合适的连续监测时间并采用氡浓度均值无疑是较好的办法。
