Spatio-temporal cross-shore profiles and textural characteristics are the key parameters for understanding dynamics of the inter-tidal sedimentary *** study describes short-term dynamics of the inter-tidal sedimentary environment at beaches along the micro-tidal *** a correlation is estimated in cross-shore morphodynamics and textural characteristics of surface *** sedimentary environment is examined for a complete annual cycle using monthly collected cross-shore profiles and sediment *** Devbag beach(northern side) and Ravindranath Tagore beach(southern side) at the Kali river mouth,Karwar,west coast of India are characterized from extremely gentle to average slope,and broadly composed of unimodal *** sedimentary environment is significantly composed of textures having fine to medium sand,well to moderately sorted,fine to coarse skewed,and platykurtic to leptokurtic in *** the annual cycle a reversal pattern is observed between the two adjacent beaches,where a slower rate of sediment accretion is observed at Devbag beach while Ravindranath Tagore beach exhibited *** beach dynamics along with the propagation of south-west(SW) and south-west-west(SWW) waves towards the coast significantly exhibit a dominance of northward sediment transport with the existence of a northerly alongshore *** addition,the study reveals that an eroded beach may not be significantly identified composed of coarse *** poor correlation in morpho-sedimentary characteristics reveals the prediction of grain characteristics based on beach profile and vice-versa is unrealistic.

grain character analysis of beach sediments along three selected beaches(Pavinkurve,Kundapura and Padukare)of Karnataka coast,west coast of India is carried out in the present *** objective was to identify the textural behavior of beach sediments during an annual cycle from March 2008 to February *** characteristics such as central tendency,sorting,kurtosis and skewness were estimated using gRADISTAT and *** maximum(62%)sediment samples were medium sand with unimodal and bimodal characters at all the three *** median values varied in between-0.04φand 2.74φwith an average value of 1.61φ.The beaches were characterized as well sorted,moderately well sorted and moderately sorted sediment *** were identified as fine skewed to coarse skewed with platykurtic,mesokurtic and leptokurtic characters. grain characteristics varied spatially and temporally along with beach orientation,foreshore slope and wave action.A negative correlation between mean and sorting is identified for maximum number samples along the study region but not very *** study shows that the sedimentary environment at Kundapura were influenced by relatively high wave action compared to Padukare and Pavinkurve beach and the beaches were under erosion or non-deposition with strong winnowing process.

The study of the palaoseismic events in the karst terrains of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is a very important up-to-date problem. The investigated region is one of the highest-energy regions in Bulgaria with established and recorded catastrophic historic and contemporary earthquakes. The terrain is subjected to the influence not only of its own earthquake foci but also of those in Romania and Russia. The palaeoearthquakes that caused considerable disturbances in the karst terrains along the Northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast have left significant traces. They caused disturbances in the environment and the relief (rearrangement of the surface and ground water karst basins, partially or entirely collapsed caves, deformed caves, oil, gas and salt intrusions and gravitationally formed caves). The ecological consequences in historic and contemporary aspects were catastrophic. The palaeoseismic dislocations were formed as a result of global, regional and local geodynamic events related with the destruction of the Moezian platform and the regional extension of the Black Sea basin. The time of their display and their spatial interrelations were established as a result of complex investigations accompanied by original documents.

The mechanical properties of Miura-ori foldcore metamaterials were studied using finite element *** responses of foldcores with various topological parameters to quasi-static out-of-plane compression and shear loading were analyzed using the relative density as a governing *** non-unique relationships between the core density and the materials'strength in the examined loading directions were revealed,pointing out the strong influence of the Miura-ori *** relationships were established between the elastic moduli and relative densities of the Miura-ori metamaterials while power-law functions of the relative density with different exponent constants were established for the strength in different loading *** was shown that the Miura-ori materials possess the highest strength under shear in the X1-X3 plane and it increases with the increase in the relative ***,this characteristic is strongly influenced by the sector angleα.In general,the difference between the two shear strengths increases when increasing the relative density by using thicker cell *** is noted that the strength of the Miura-ori materials as a function of the relative density is nearly constant with respect to the cell dimensions if the values of folding angleγ0 and sector angleαare *** mechanical characteristics of the Miura-ori material with equal relative density,which exhibits the highest strength among the analyzed origami models,are compared with the out-of-plane compression and shear responses of prismatic hexagonal *** is observed that compression and shear responses of the honeycomb outperform the Miura-ori foldcore in all loading directions when considering large deformations.

Quantitative Estimation of Coastal Changes Along Selected Locations of Karnataka, India: A gIS and Remote Sensing Approach

Qualitative and quantitative studies on changes of coastal geomorphology and shoreline of Karnataka, India have been carried out using toposheets of Survey of India and satellite imageries (IRS-P6 and IRS-1D). Changes during 30 years period are studied at each station. Significant morphological changes in landforms like spit, channel Island, coastal plain, tidal flat, lateritic plain, alluvial plain and sand bar within and adjcent to estuarine river mouths of Kali, Sharavathi, Kollur-Chakkara - Haladi and Udyavara Rivers are observed. The study indicates that gradual erosion is observed at i) Karwar spit along the northern side of the Kali river mouth, ii) the spit at the southern side of the Sharavathi river mouth and iii) at some regions of Kundapur.

Hydrodynamic characteristics of fluidization in a conical or tapered bed differ from those in a columnar bed because the superficial velocity in the bed varies in the axial direction. Fixed and fluidized regions could coexist and sharp variations in pressure drop could occur, thereby giving rise to a noticeable pressure drop-flow rate hysteresis loop under incipient fluidization conditions. To explore these unique properties, several experiments were carried out using homogeneous, well-mixed, ternary mixtures with three dif- ferent particle sizes at varying composition in gas-solid conical fluidized beds with varying cone angles. The hydrodynamic characteristics determined include the minimum fluidization velocity, bed fluctuation, and bed expansion ratios. The dependence of these quantities on average particle diameter, mass fraction of the fines in the mixture, initial static bed height, and cone angle is discussed. Based on dimensional analysis and factorial design, correlations are developed using the system parameters, i.e. geometry of the bed （cone angle）, particle diameter, initial static bed height, density of the solid, and superficial velocity of the fluidizing medium. Experimental values of minimum fluidization velocity, bed fluctuation, and bed expansion ratios were found to agree well with the developed correlations.

Variations in Swells along Eastern Arabian Sea during the Summer Monsoon

A study was carried out to find the variation in wave characteristics along the eastern Arabian Sea and the influence of swells in the nearshore waves at 3 locations during summer monsoon in 2010. Percentage of swells in the measured waves was 75% to 79% at the locations with higher percentage of swells in the northern portion of Arabian Sea com-pared to that at the southern side. The significant wave height up to 4.7 m and maximum wave height up to 7.4 m was observed. The wave height was increasing from south to north with the average significant wave height at the northern location 20% more than that at the southern location due to the increase in the swell height. Waves having spectral peak period less than 6 s were not present during the summer monsoon period. There was no change in the average value of wave statistical parameters for data collected at 1/2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h interval.
