Selective C3-alkenylation of oxindole with aldehydes using heterogeneous CeO2 catalyst

We report herein that a commercially available CeO2 is an active and reusable catalyst for the C3-selective alkenylation of oxindole with aldehydes under solvent-free conditions. This catalytic method is generally applicable to different aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes, giving 3-alkyledene-oxindoles in high yields(87%–99%) and high stereoselectivities(79%–93% to E-isomers). This is the first example of the catalytic synthesis of 3-alkenyl-oxindoles from oxindole and various aliphatic aldehydes. The Lewis acid-base interaction between Lewis acid sites on CeO2 and benzaldehyde was studied by in situ IR. The structure-activity relationship study using CeO2 catalysts with different sizes suggests that defect-free CeO2 surface is the active site for this reaction.

The present era has witnessed tremendous growth of the Internet and various applications that are supported by it. There is an enormous pressure on Internet Service providers (ISps) to make available adequate services for the traffics like VoIp and Video on demand. Since the resources like computing power, bandwidth etc. are limited, the traffic needs to be engineered to properly exploit them. Due to these limitations, terms like Traffic Engineering, Quality of Service (QoS) came into existence. Traffic Engineering broadly includes techniques like multipath routing & traffic splitting to balance the load among different paths. In this document, we survey various techniques proposed for load balancing that are available on the Internet. We here try not to be exhaustive but analyze the important techniques in the literature. present survey would help to give a new direction to the research in this realm.

Exercise training and antioxidant supplementation independently improve cognitive function in adult male and female gFAp-ApOE mice

purpose： The purpose of this study was to determine if antioxidant supplementation, moderate exercise, and the combination of both treatments could ameliorate cognitive performance in adult mice and whether the apolipoprotein E （ApOE） genotype as well as sex could influence the functional outcomes of the treatments. Methods： For a period of 16 weeks, separate groups of male and female mice expressing either the human ApOE3 or ApOE4 isoforms were fed either a control diet （NIH-31） or the control diet supplemented with vitamins E and C （1.12 IU/g diet a-tocopheryl acetate and 1.65 mg/g ascorbic acid）. The mice were further separated into a sedentary group or a group that followed a daily exercise regimen. After 8 weeks on the treatments, the mice were administered a battery of functional tests including tests to measure cognitive and affective function. Results： There was no effect of genotype or treatment on the learning performance in the Morris water maze. In the discriminated avoidance task, ApOE4 mice performed better in learning the discrimination component of the task. Overall, exercise improved performance of ApOE4 and ApOE3 mice on various aspects of the active avoidance task. Antioxidant supplementation improved performance only in the ApOE4 mice. On the test for anxiety, ApOE4 mice spent more time in the open arms and supplementation with antioxidant reversed that effect. Conclusion： Exercise was the most effective treatment at improving cognitive function in both genotypes and sex, while antioxidants seemed to be effective only in the ApOE4. In young adult mice only non-spatial learning and memory were improved. The combination of the two treatments did not yield further improvement in cognition, and there was no antagonistic action of the antioxidant supplementation on the beneficial effects of exercise.

Structural and Electrical Characterization of gaN Thin Films on Si(100)

The gallium Nitride (gaN) layers grown on silicon substrates by electron beam evaporation technique. X- ray diffraction revealed that polycrystalline gaN was obtained indicating the enhance crystallinity of the films with annealing temperature at 600oC. Crystalline quality of the gaN films was determined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The crystalline size increases with increasing annealing temperature. The fab- ricated MIS structures were characterized using Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) measurements, the capacitance remains nearly constant over a large range in higher negative as well as over a large range in higher positive gate voltages and Current-Voltage (I-V) measurements shows low forward and reverse current possibly due to high density defect formation in the thin layer of gallium nitride during its *** film is characterized by X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XpS). The XpS spectra show that formation of pure gaN with- out presence of elemental gallium and ga2O3 in this film.

Objective: To estimate the relationship of Food Craving (FC) behavior with females’ Body Mass Index (BMI), and body-composition. Design, setting and participants: A cross-sectional study of 302 reproductive-age women from middle-socioeconomic class was conducted at the Health & Occupational-Environmental Laboratory. Variable Measures: A FC behavior questionnaire (FCQ) was designed and validated in 151 female subjects. This questionnaire evaluated five dimensions: FC-leisure, FC-psychological reactance, FC-depression, FC-anxiety/stress, and FC-anger. Dependent variables were Body Mass Index (BMI, kg/m2) and the body fat mass. Interventions: A second group of 151 women completed the FCQ. Anthropometrical variables were recorded using the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry procedure. Analysis: A multiple regression-analysis using STAT- ISTICS version 7 was performed to determine the relationship of FC behavior with anthropometrical variables described. Results: We demonstrated that 98.7% of women had FC behavior. Women with higher BMI had higher scores of FC-depressions (p = 0.02) and FC-anger (p = 0.007). Food craving behavior (p psychological-reactance (p = 0.006), were positive predictors of BMI;food psychological reactance was also a positive predictor of upper and lower-body fat mass (p = 0.005) and (p = 0.008), respectively. Conclusion and Implications: The food craving behavior is a common problem in the female population. Food psychological reactance, in addition to another affective alteration that present the population of women are predictor variables for the increase in BMI and in body-fat mass. It is important that health professionals are aware of the affective states of their patients.

A silicon-based photonic switch is proposed and simulated based on the multimode interference （MMI） principle and the free-carrier plasma dispersion effect in silicon-germanium. The proposed switch, designed for 1.55μm window operation,is useful for DWDM optical networks. The switch consists of two input single-mode ridge waveguide ports,a MMI section, and three output single-mode ridge waveguide ports. In the MMI section, two index-modulation regions are placed to divert input optical signals from the two input ports to each of the three output ports. Switching characteristics are demonstrated theoretically by a beam propagation method for 1.55μm operation. The simulated results show that the insertion loss of the switch is less than 1.43dB, and the crosstalk is between - 18 and - 32.8dB.

The ZrO2 thin films deposited on Si (100) were successfully synthesized by solgel process and deposited by using spin-coating *** structural properties of ZrO2 thin films were investigated by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and electrical properties were studied by conventional techniques like Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) measurement and Current–Voltage (I–V) measurement. The XRD of ZrO2 films shows the films crystallized and exists in two phases at 700℃ calcinations temperature. The C–V characteristics of all the dielectric films that involved distinct inversion, depletion, and accumulation were clearly revealed in MIS structure. I-V characteristics of ZrO2 thin films on Si shows decreased saturation current on calcinations temperatures. The XpS measurement reveals that a zirconium silicate interfacial layer has formed in the ZrO2/Si Systems.
