SCOUR mITIgATION AT BRIDgE PIERS USINg SACRIFICIAL PILES

To mitigate scour around bridge piers, sacrificial piles are economic method where natural processes are involved. The arrang.m.nt should be such that scoured materials from the sacrificial piles should have enough volume to fill the scour hole created upstream of the pier in such a way that sediments are trapped inside the scour hole. This concept differs from earlier study made with sacrificial piles that mainly deals to reduce the strength of horseshoe vortex. To determine the effect of sacrificial piles for scour mitigation, alternative arrang.m.nts of piles were tested in front of a rectangular pier under clear-water condition and found that when the group of piles is placed at a distance of twice the projected width of the pier, for which percentage of blockage of the pier width is 60%, the scour volume can be reduced upto 61% while the maximum scour depth can be reduced upto 50%.

This paper presents the experimental results on the distribution of sediments at channel bifurcation. The experiments have been conducted in a physical model of channel bifurcation. It consists of a straight main channel which bifurcates into two branch channels of different widths. The test rig is a mobile bed with fixed bank. Four different noses have been used to study the phenomenon. For each nose, three upstream discharges viz. 20 l/s, 30 l/s and 40 l/s have been employed. From the measured data, discharges and sediment transport ratios per unit width are calculated in the downstream branches. These data have been set to the general nodal point relation and a set of equations has been developed to describe the distribution of sediments to the downstream branches for different nose angles.

Pre- and Post-Urban Wetland Area in Dhaka City,Bangladesh: A Remote Sensing and gIS Analysis

Landscape of Dhaka city - one of the fastest growing.m.ga cities in the world, is undergoing continuous changes and modifications due to progressive urbanization. Pre- and post-urban changes of water bodies in the city were studied using aerial photographs and SPOT images in gIS environment. In 1968, the total area of marshy and peaty inundated low-lying areas was 133 km2, which was depicted to be 67 km2 in the year 2001. The total area of inland lakes as estimated from the aerial photos of 1968 was 5.1 km2 which became 1.8 km2 in the year 2001 as seen in SPOT image. more than 50% of the wetland area reduced over the period 1968 to 2001. Changes of the water body mostly occurred in the regions where majority of the urban expan-sion took place. The urban infrastructures filled and/or compartmentalized the water bodies, causing water loggings problem during wet-season in various part of the city. Development and alteration of the existing water bodies should consider the natural hydrological conditions so that the changes can cope with the artifi-cial intervention.
