Downregulation of the Basic Peroxidase Isoenzyme from Zinnia elegans by gibberellic Acid

Hypocotyl formation during the epigeal germination of seedlings is under strict hormonal regulation. In a 3 d old Zinnia elegans seedling system, gibberellic acid （gA3） exerts an opposite effect to that exerted by light on hypocotyl photomorphogenesis because gAz promotes an etiolated-like growth with an inhibition of radial （secondary） growth. For this reason, the effect of gA3 on the basic peroxidase isoenzyme from Z. elegans （ZePrx）, an enzyme involved in hypocotyl lignin biosynthesis, was studied. The results showed that gA3 reduces ZePrx activity, similarly to the way in which it reduces seedling secondary growth. This hormonal response is supported by the analysis of the ZePrx promoter, which contains four types of gA3-responsive ***： the W Box/O2S; the Pyr Box; the gARE; and the Amy Box. Taken together, these results suggest that ZePrx is directly regulated by gA3, with this effect matching the inhibitory effect of gA on the hypocotyl secondary growth.

Minimization of methabenzthiazuron residues in leaching water using amended soils and photocatalytic treatment with TiO_2 and ZnO

In the present work, potential groundwater pollution by methabenzthiazuron （MTBU） and the effect of three different amendments （composted sheep manure, composted pine bark and spent coffee grounds） on its mobility were investigated under laboratory conditions. The efficiency of ZnO and TiO2 suspensions in the photocatalytic degradation of MTBU in leaching water was also investigated. The relative and cumulative breakthrough curves were obtained from disturbed soil columns. The presence and/or addition of organic matter drastically reduced the movement of the herbicide. On other hand, photocatalytic experiments showed that the addition of ZnO and TiO2 strongly enhances the degradation rate of this herbicide compared with the results of photolytic experiments under artificial light. ZnO appeared to be more effective in MTBU oxidation than TiO2. The results obtained point to the interest of using organic wastes and heterogeneous photocatalysis for reducing the pollution of groundwater by pesticide drainage.

Failure Analysis of Austenitic Stainless Steel Implant Screws and Prospection of Chemical Composition Using Artificial Intelligence

In this work, austenitic stainless steel screws employed in a locking compression plate for veterinarian use were investigated. These types of implants are widely utilized in bone fractures healing. Two surgical screws were extracted due to the observation of slight superficial red rust colorizing on one of the screw implants, visual evidence of probable screw rusting. From the same implant, another screw was extracted simultaneously without visual evidence of rusting. In order to characterize and analyze the different behavior of both screws, the chemical composition was characterized by atomic absorption and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) coupled to a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also, the screws were studied by metallography, optical microscopy (OM), Vickers microhardness tests, and SEM analysis. On the other hand, a prospection for alloy chemical composition limits of these types of implants was performed based on the Schaeffler-Delong diagram and the ASTM F-138 standard. To analyze the effect of the chemical composition, heat treatment, microstructure, pitting resistance equivalent number (PRE) and stacking fault energy (SFE), a genetic algorithm (gA) and an artificial neural network (ANN) were used. In accordance with the elemental analysis, the surgical screws do not fulfill the ranges of the chemical composition established by the ASTM F-138 standard. Furthermore, there were found differences between the microstructures of the screws. In regard to the prospection, the results of gA and ANN support the proposed chemical composition region on the Schaeffler-Delong diagram. The corrosion failure was associated with severe plastic deformation and the presence of precipitates. The proposal can minimize the cause of failures in these types of austenitic stainless steel implants.

Robust flat filtering DSP based control of the boost converter

The article deals with the design and implementation of a flat filter tracking digital controller for a boost DC-DC power converter. A highly perturbed switched boost converter circuit is shown to be efficiently controlled, in a trajectory tracking task for its non-minimum phase output, by means of a suitable linear filter, here addressed as a flat filter. Flat filtering is a natural robust version of generalized proportional integral control （gPIC） by which the effects of arbitrary time varying exogenous disturbances, unknown endogenous nonlinearities and un-modeled dynamics can be jointly attenuated in a conceptually similar fashion to observer-based active disturbance rejection control （ADRC） and algebraic identification based model free control （MFC） but： a） without using extended state observers and b） respecting the original system order in a time-varying simplified model while avoiding algebraic estimation techniques. The proposed control technique based on the TMS320F28335 digital signal processor chip is tested by means of realistic simulations and experimental setup.

Endogenous Norepinephrine Desensitizes α_1D-Adrenoceptors in Cultured Rat Aorta

Desensitization is a process characterized by the loss of cellular response to an agonist when this is present for a long time. α1D-adrenergic receptor (α1D-AR) desensitization is important since this receptor is involved in the contraction of large caliber arteries, such as the aorta. The aim of this research was to evaluate the desensitization of α1D-AR due to the endogenous release of norepinephrine in cultured rat aorta. Wistar rat aorta was incubated for 2 h or 24 h in DMEM at 37°C, and then subjected to isometric tension and the action of added norepinephrine, in concentration-response curve (CRC). In some experiments, BMY-7378 (α1D-AR antagonist) or 5-methylurapidil (α1A-AR antagonist) was used to identify the α1-AR involved in the response, or BMY-7378 to protect the α1D-AR from desensitization. Results showed that α1D-AR was desensitized when the aorta was incubated for 24 h, since the CRC to exogenous norepinephrine showed lower maximal contraction and the curve was displaced to the right, indicating that the receptor involved in contraction was not the α1D-AR, as compared to the aorta incubated 2 h. The receptor stimulated by norepinephrine at 24 h was neither the α1A-AR, as shown by the lack of displacement of the curve by 5-methylurapidil, but rather it seems that α1B-AR is inducing contraction. When the aorta was incubated with BMY-7378 for 24 h, the α1D-AR antagonist protected the receptor from desensitization. Endogenous norepinephrine desensitizes α1D-AR in the cultured aorta, and the α1D-AR is protected by BMY-7378.

Field-based fire studies in the equatorial Andes indicate that fires are strongly associated with biophysical and anthropogenic ***,fire controls and fire regimes at the regional scale remain ***,this paper describes spatial and temporal burned-area patterns,identifies biophysical and anthropogenic fire drivers,and quantifies fire probability across 6°of latitude and 3°of longitude in the equatorial *** spatial and temporal burned-area analysis was carried out based on 18 years(2001-2018)of the MCD64 A1 MODIS burned-area ***,topography,vegetation,and anthropogenic variables were integrated in a logistic regression model to identify the significance of explanatory variables and determine fire occurrence probability.A total of 5779 fire events were registered during the 18 years of this study,located primarily along the western cordillera of the Andes and spreading from North to ***-eight percent of these fires took place within two fire hotspots located in the northwestern and southwestern corners of the study ***-nine percent occurred during the second part of the year,between June and *** largest density of fires was primarily located on herbaceous vegetation and *** show that mean monthly temperature,precipitation and NDVI during the prefire season,the location of land cover classes such as forest and agriculture,distance to roads and urban areas,slope,and aspect were the most important determinants of spatial and temporal fire *** logistic regression model achieved a good accuracy in predicting fire probability(80%).Probability was higher in the southwestern and northern corners of the study area,and lower towards the north in the western and eastern piedmonts of the *** analysis contributes to the understanding of fires in mountains within the *** results here presented have the potential to contribute to fire management and control in the regi

Cucurbita ficifolia Bouché Regulates the Metabolism of Carbohydrates and Lipids in Liver by Activation of PPARα without Affectation on PPARγ in Vivo and in Vitro

Diabetes mellitus control in Mexico is practiced by using antidiabetic agents and, by empirical way using medicinal plants. Cucurbita ficifolia (C. ficifolia) has been attributed with hypoglycemic, hypotriglyceridemic, and anti-inflam- matory effects, and D-chiro-inositol (DCI), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and β-sitosterol were proposed as active principles. The last two compounds were suggested as activators of two transcription factors, PPARα and PPARγ, in C2C12 myocytes, which participate in β-oxidation of fatty acids and insulin sensitivity. However, the involvement of the hepatocytic and adipocytic PPARs in the effects of C. ficifolia has not yet been explored. This research aimed to determine the effects of C. ficifolia on PPARα, PPARγ, and inflammatory cytokines in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mice, Hepg2 hepatocytes and 3T3-L1 adipocytes, implicating two additional cell types associated with metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids. STZ-induced diabetes mice received C. ficifolia (200 mg/kg/day) for 30 days, measuring serum cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6). RNA was extracted from liver. Besides, Hepg2 and 3T3-L1 cells were incubated (24 h) with C. ficifolia (0.078 mM DCI), using pioglitazone or fenofibrate as controls. RNA was also extracted from cells and PCR in real-time was performed to determinate PPARα and PPARγ expression. In diabetic animals, C. ficifolia decreased glycemia and body weight, decreasing the expression level of TNF-α and IL-6. In addition, C. ficifolia increased PPARα expression in liver of diabetic animals, in Hepg2 and 3T3-L1 cells;PPARγ expression only significantly increased in Hepg2 cells. The data suggest that the effects on the glycemia and lipids of C. ficifolia and its anti-inflammatory effects imply, besides skeletal muscle cells, hepatic and adipocytic PPARα activation, without affectation on PPARγ. A technical and socioeconomic approach to estimate forest residues as a feedstock for bioenergy in northern Mexico

Background: Forest residues can be a feasible alternative for converting energy into fuels, electricity, or *** to other second-generation bioenergy sources, they do not compete for food, are relatively cheap,abundant in forest-rich areas, and more importantly their energy balance is close to zero. Biomass estimations can help design energy strategies to reduce fossil fuels dependency. Because of the land property distribution in Mexico,biomass estimations should consider not only the physical availability, but also the willingness of landowners to extract such raw ***: This study presents a methodological approach for evaluating the potential use of forest residues as a feedstock to generate bioenergy in northern Mexico. Remote sensing and field forest inventory were used to estimate the quantity and distribution of forest residues. In addition, a discrete choice analysis evaluated landowners’ preferences towards bioenergy development, including the most important factors that influence their willingness to extract their products and the expected *** and conclusions: Considering both physical and socio-economic aspects, results showed that about59,000 metric tons per year could be available in the study area. The vast majority of landowners surveyed are willing to extract forest residues, as long as they are presented with extraction plans with the highest income. However, many showed concerns about the environmental impacts this activity can have on soils,plants, and fauna. These results can help evaluate the potential of these resources for bioenergy development.

Mathematical Model to Elaborate the Table of Thermodynamic Properties

Purpose: The aim of this scientific contribution is to show the potential that integral calculus has offered to the analysis of thermodynamic processes. Method: Application of Integral Calculus. In this context, the document covers the theoretical principles of integral calculus, such as Theoretical framework and background, geometric interpretation of the primitive, Primitive existence theorem. Results: Integral calculus and generalized thermodynamic models, and their applications in various thermodynamic analysis contacts such as the generalized Enthalpy Model, the generalized Entropy Model, and the generalized Model applied to gas mixtures and the general Model to elaborate the properties table. Conclusion: The mathematical analysis developed in this document is very useful in engineering and applied physics environments, a fact that supports its common pedagogical practice in university institutions.
