Clinical outcomes with a new design in multifocal intraocular lens:a pilot study

Purpose:To evaluate the clinical and visual outcomes,quality of near vision and the influence of photic phenomena in patients bilaterally implanted with a new Precizon Presbyopic multifocal intraocular lens(IOL).Methods:In this prospective consecutive case series,20 eyes of 10 patients were included(mean age 63.80±12.55 years).Uncorrected and corrected visual acuity(far,intermediate and near),subjective refraction,binocular defocus curve,contrast sensitivity(CSV-1000)and quality of vision and satisfaction questionnaires were *** follow-up was 12 months after ***:At 12 months after surgery,uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDva)improved with surgery(p=0.001)with a value of 0.08±0.08 *** near visual acuity(UNva)was 0.22±0.12 logMAR and distance corrected near visual acuity(DCNva)was 0.16±0.13 *** distance visual acuity(UIva)was 0.22±0.10 *** sensitivity outcomes were similar to normal population in photopic conditions and slightly reduced in mesopic conditions of *** curve showed that this multifocal IOL was able to provide a visual acuity(va)equal or better to 0.16 logMAR between defocus levels of+1.00 to−2.50 *** patient satisfaction was obtained in quality of vision and satisfaction questionnaires ***:The Precizon Presbyopic Nva IOL(OPHTEC bV)provides good visual *** multifocal IOL provides a high percentage of spectacle independence due to good va at far,intermediate and near distances and satisfactory contrast *** patient satisfaction was observed in quality of vision and satisfaction questionnaires with a low percentage of patients manifesting photic phenomena.

Accuracy of biometric formulae for intraocular lens power calculation in a teaching hospital

AIM: To evaluate the accuracy of three commonly used biometric formulae across different axial lengths(ALs) at one United States Veterans Affairs teaching ***: A retrospective chart review was conducted from November 2013 to May 2018. One eye of each patient who underwent cataract surgery with a monofocal intraocular lens(IOL) was included. The range of postoperative follow-up period was from 3 wk to 4 mo. The Holladay 2, barrett Universal II, and Hill-Radial basis Function(Hill-RbF) formulae were used to predict the postoperative refraction for all cataract surgeries. For each formula, we calculated the prediction errors [including mean absolute prediction error(MAE)] and the percentage of eyes within ±0.25 diopter(D) and ±0.5 D of predicted refraction. We performed subgroup analyses for short(ALg eyes(AL>25.0 mm).RESULTS: A total of 1131 patients were screened, and 909 met the inclusion criteria. Resident ophthalmologists were the primary surgeons in 710(78.1%) cases. We found no statistically significant difference in predictive accuracy among the three formulae over the entire AL range or in the short, medium, and long eye subgroups. Across the entire AL range, the Hill-RbF formula resulted in the lowest MAE(0.384 D) and the highest percentage of eyes with postoperative refraction within ±0.25 D(42.7%) and ±0.5 D(75.5%) of predicted. All three formulae had the highest MAEs(>0.5 D) and lowest percentage within ±0.5 D of predicted refraction(gery patients at our teaching hospital, three commonly used biometric formulae demonstrate similar refractive accuracy across all ALs. Short eyes pose the greatest challenge to predicting postoperative refractive error.

The incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) has dramatically increased in the United States as well as Western European countries. The majority of esophageal adenocarcinomas arise from a backdrop of barrett’s esophagus (bE), a premalignant lesion that can lead to dysplasia and cancer. because of the increased risk of EAC, gI society guidelines recommend endoscopic surveillance of patients with bE. The emphasis on early detection of dysplasia in bE through surveillance endoscopy has led to the development of advanced endoscopic imaging technologies. These techniques have the potential to both improve mucosal visualization and characterization and to detect small mucosal abnormalities which are difficult to identify with standard endoscopy. This review summarizes the advanced imaging technologies used in evaluation of bE.

The focus of this study was to investigate the macroinvertebrate community in surface mine wetlands. Nine wetlands were sampled for macroinvertebrates from July 1993 through May *** sites represented a range of physical,chemical, and biological parameters. Macroinvertebrates were found in all sites;a total of 14 orders, 40 families,and 70 genera were identified in the samples. Insects were the most common invertebrates,and most functional feeding groups were represented. Predators dominated with 63% of the taxa, followed by the collector/gathers with 20%,shredders 14%, and scrapers 3%. Sites differed in the number of taxa inhabiting *** ranged from 10 genera to *** lowest richness was found in two seasonal wetlands that were dry for the majority of the year. A permanently flooded site with no water quality problems and a dense growth of aquatic plants had the highest richness.

The complex genetic architecture of quality traits has hindered efforts to modify seed nutrients in soybean. genome-wide association studies were conducted for seed composition, including protein, oil, fatty acids, and amino acids, using 313 diverse soybean germplasm accessions genotyped with a high-density SNP array. A total of 87 chromosomal regions were identified to be associated with seed composition, explain- ing 8%-89% of genetic variances. The candidate genes gmSAT1, AK-HSDH, SACPD-C, and FAD3A of known function, and putative MtN21 nodulin, FATb, and steroid-5-^-reductase involved in N2 fixation, amino acid biosynthesis, and fatty acid metabolism were found at the major-effect loci. Further analysis of additional germplasm accessions indicated that these major-effect loci had been subjected to domes- tication or modern breeding selection, and the allelic variants and distributions were relevant to geographic regions. We also revealed that amino acid concentrations related to seed weight and to total protein had a different genetic basis. This helps uncover the in-depth genetic mechanism of the intricate relationships among the seed compounds. Thus, our study not only provides valuable genes and markers for soybean nutrient improvement, both quantitatively and qualitatively, but also offers insights into the alteration of soybean quality during domestication and breeding.

Using data from previous editions, plus 3,283 new measurements from 899 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as heavy neutrinos, supersymmetric and technicolor particles, axions, dark photons, etc. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Supersymmetry, Extra Dimensions, Particle Detectors, Probability, and Statistics. Among the 112 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised including those on： Dark Energy, Higgs boson Physics, Electroweak Model, Neutrino Cross Section Measurements, Monte Carlo Neutrino generators, Top Quark, Dark Matter, Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry breaking, Accelerator Physics of Colliders, High-Energy Collider Parameters, big bang Nucleosynthesis, Astrophysical Constants and Cosmological Parameters. A booklet is available containing the Summary Tables and abbreviated versions of some of the other sections of this full Review. Purpose:To investigate the effect of different levels of visual field defect in glaucoma on utilities and to test if utilities could be assessed using a general questionnaire such as the ***:cross-sectional study in 199 patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma grouped into 5 severity stages according to visual field defects was performed in 4 specialized ophthalmic *** analysis was performed for the sample and by stage,and the effect of vision loss on utility was investigated with multiple step-wise regression ***:The mean age of the sample was 70 and the mean MD in the worse eye was-13.1 db(SD 10.2).Visual acuity(va)was 0.63 and 0.87 in the worse and better eye,respectively,and the mean utility was 0.80(SD 0.23).Utility decreased with increasing glaucomatous damage,ranging from 0.84 for mild disease to 0.72 for severe damage(MD-2.5 to-28.1),but the difference between the groupswas not statistically significant when controlling for co-morbidity,except for the most severe stage(p gression analysis,visual field in the better eye was significantly correlated with utility,and therewas an indirect correlation between visual field in the worse eye and utility:the effect of total va on utility was significant,and MD in the worse eye was correlated with total ***:Utility is strongly correlated with overall *** results suggest a relationship between glaucomatous damage and utility,and patients with severe damage have a significantly lower ***,this should be further investigated in larger samples that include more patients with moderate-severe bilateral damage.
