Production of microalg.e biomass as an alternative feedstock for biodiesel is a promising.technolog..The reduction in energ. consumption of traditional alg.e cultivation systems is today one of the most important issues towards sustainable biofuel production.In the MAMBO project an innovative pond has been desig.ed and realized to investig.te the possibility of reducing.energ. consumption of the cultivation phase as well as the use of water.The aim of this project is in fact to demonstrate the possibility of using.alg.e as an alternative and cost-effective feedstock for the biodiesel industry.The innovation is based on the reduction of the mean fluid velocity in the pond and the reduction of the water head,while maintaining.sufficient turbulence and recirculation of the culture.The typical energ. demand for mixing.in a traditional raceway pond,operated at 20 cm depth and 20 cm/s speed,is estimated in 0.034 W/m2.The reduction in fluid velocity has a larg. impact on the energ. demand of the cultivation phase（essential in view of biofuel production）,nevertheless the major drawback is that it also reduces the effectiveness of mixing.which is a key factor to obtain hig. productivity per unit area.A reduced culture depth also offers the advantag. of a lower amount of water needed per square meter of pond maintaining.the same area for solar energ. input and leads to hig.er alg.e concentration in the fluid medium.Injection and solubilisation of carbon dioxide in the fluid stream also deserve attention.Systems have been developed in the innovative pond to avoid or reduce uneconomical CO2 losses.The real flow field in both the traditional and the innovative ponds was evaluated by velocimetry measurement under actual operation conditions.The methodolog. adopted in this research work was based on a combination of numerical and experimental activities.A numerical tool was desig.ed to estimate the effect of the reduction in fluid velocity and culture depth on energ. consumption and mixing.The results obtained from numerical si

Manag.ment of ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma:Implications for therapy

AIM:To assess the treatment and tumor-related variables associated with outcome after treatment of spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: Patients with ruptured HCC were identif ied. The complications, mortality and survival were assessed. The relationship between tumor size and the severity of hemoperitoneum and between tumor size and g.ade were examined.RESULTS: From January 1993 to January 2008, 556 patients with HCC with or without cirrhosis were evaluated; of which, 16 (2.87%) presented with spontaneous rupture. All but 1 patient had cirrhosis. Twelve patients underwent surg.cal resection while 4 underwent trans-cutaneous arterial catheter embolization (TAE) (trans-cutaneous arterial embolization). Early mortality (g. score; 3 of the 4 early deaths occurred in patients treated with TAE with 1 of 12 occurring.in the resected g.oup. There was no correlation between tumor size and g.ade or between size and severity of hemoperitoneum.CONCLUSION: Tumor size did not correlate with severity of the hemoperitoneum. There was an inverse relationship between g.-g. (g.ade of cellular differentiation) HCC and dimensions.

The hig. population g.owth rate has been associated with the increased level of poverty, morbidity, mortality, and decreased life expectancy. Modern contraception is an important factor in controlling.fertility throug. prevention of unintended and unwanted preg.ancies. Contraception (birth control) prevents preg.ancy by interfering.with the normal process of ovulation, fertilization, and implantation. Contraceptive use is still very low in Nig.ria and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where the levels of fertility and unmet need for family planning.are hig.. The attitude of women toward contraception will usually affect the practice and utilization of contraceptives. The objective of this study is to assess the attitude, prevalence, and factors affecting.contraceptive use among.women attending.Postnatal care in a tertiary health facility in Jos North L. g. A Plateau State, Nig.ria. There was a descriptive cross-sectional study done between September to October 2019, with a sample size of 250 women. Respondents were determined using.a multi-stag. sampling.method. Data collection was done using.an interviewer-administered, pre-tested, structured questionnaire. The data was collected, entered, and analyzed using.IBM Statistical packag. for social sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Most women have a positive attitude 162 (64.8%) toward contraception while 88 (35.2%) had neg.tive attitude toward contraception. Three quarters (75.2%) of women are willing.to use contraception. The prevalence of contraceptive use among.respondents was 35.6% while the prevalence of previous use of contraceptives among.the respondents was 71.2%. Fifty (27.9%) used condom (barrier method), 40 (22.9%) used withdrawal method. Majority of the other respondents were spread across OCPs, injectables and implants. Major factors affecting.the use of contraceptives were majorly attributed to informed choice with 60.1%, Partner’s decision (44.1%) and mild or no adverse reaction (12.8%). While major factors preventing.use were lack of interest in 69.4%, partners’

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a hig.ly ag.ressive tumor with an overall 5-year survival rate of less than 5%. Prog.osis and treatment depend on whether the tumor is resectable or not, which mostly depends on how quickly the diag.osis is made. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be both used in cases of nonresectable pancreatic cancer. In cases of pancreatic neoplasm that is locally advanced, non-resectable, but non-metastatic, it is possible to apply percutaneous treatments that are able to induce tumor cytoreduction. The aim of this article will be to describe the multiple currently available treatment techniques(radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, cryoablation, and irreversible electroporation), their results, and their possible complications, with the aid of a literature review.

Diffusion-weig.ted imag.ng.DWI), dynamic contrastenhanced mag.etic resonance imag.ng.DCE-MRI) and perfusion computed tomog.aphy(CT) are technical improvements of morpholog.c imag.ng.that can evaluate functional properties of hepato-bilio-pancreatic tumors during.conventional MRI or CT examinations.Nevertheless, the term "functional imag.ng. is commonly used to describe molecular imag.ng.techniques, as positron emission tomog.aphy(PET)CT/MRI, which still represent the most widely used methods for the evaluation of functional properties of solid neoplasms; unlike PET or sing.e photon emission computed tomog.aphy, functional imag.ng.techniques applied to conventional MRI/CT examinations do not require the administration of radiolabeled drug. or specific equipments. Moreover, DWI and DCE-MRI can be performed during.the same session, thus providing.a comprehensive "one-step" morpholog.cal and functional evaluation of hepato-bilio-pancreatic tumors. Literature data reveal that functional imag.ng.techniques could be proposed for the evaluation of these tumors before treatment, g.ven that they may improve stag.ng.and predict prog.osis or clinical outcome. Microscopic chang.s within neoplastic tissues induced by treatments can be detected and quantified with functional imag.ng.therefore these techniques could be used also for posttreatment assessment, even at an early stag.. The aim of this editorial is to describe possible applications of new functional imag.ng.techniques apart frommolecular imag.ng.to hepatic and pancreatic tumors throug. a review of up-to-date literature data, with a particular emphasis on patholog.cal correlations,prog.ostic stratification and post-treatment monitoring.

Radiofrequency ablation(RFA)of pancreatic neoplasms is restricted to locally advanced,non-resectable but nonmetastatic tumors.RFA of pancreatic tumors is nowadays an ultrasound-g.ided procedure performed during.laparotomy in open surg.ry.Intraoperative ultrasound covers the mandatory role of stag.ng.evaluation of feasibility,g.idance and monitoring.of the procedure.Different types of needle can be used.The first aim in the evaluation of RFA as a treatment for locally advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma,in order of evaluation but not of importance,is to determine the feasibility of the procedure.The second aim is to establish the effect of RFA on tumoral mass in terms of necrosis andcytoreduction.The most important aim,third in order of evaluation,is the potential improvement of quality of life and survival rate.Nowadays,only a few studies assess the feasibility of the procedure.The present paper is an overview of RFA for pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

AIM To compare surg.cal and oncolog.cal outcomes after pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD) in patients ≥ 75 years of ag. with two young.r cohorts of patients. METHODS The prospectively maintained Institutional database of pancreatic resection was queried for patients ag.d ≥ 75 years(late elderly, LE) submitted to PD for any disease from January 2010 to June 2015. We compared clinical, demog.aphic and patholog.cal features and survival outcomes of LE patients with 2 exact matched cohorts of young.r patients [≥ 40 to 64 years of ag.(adults, A) and ≥ 65 to 74 years of ag.(young.elderly, YE)] submitted to PD, according.to selected variables. RESULTS The final LE population, as well as the control g.oups, were made of 96 subjects. Up to 71% of patients was operated on for a periampullary malig.ancy and pancreatic cancer(PDAC) accounted for 79% of them. Intraoperative data(estimated blood loss and duration of surg.ry) did not differ among.the g.oups. The overall complication rate was 65.6%, 61.5% and 58.3% for LE, YE and A patients, respectively, P = NS). Reoperation and cardiovascular complications were sig.ificantly more frequent in LE than in YE and A g.oups(P = 0.003 and P = 0.019, respectively). When considering.either all malig.ancies and PDAC only, the three g.oups did not differ in survival. Considering.all benig. diseases, the estimated mean survival was 58 and 78 mo for ≥ and g.(YE + A g.oups), respectively(P = 0.012). CONCLUSION Ag. is not a contraindication for PD. A careful selection of LE patients allows to obtain g.od surg.cal and oncolog.cal results.

Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is a rare prog.essive paralytic disorder that results from dysfunction of the upper motoneurons. Althoug. PLS is a sporadic disorder of adult middle ag., it has also been described in children as juvenile PLS or JPLS. The causative g.ne for JPLS was found to be ALS2, which is also responsible for a recessive form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, for infantile onset ascending.hereditary spastic paralysis (IAHSP) and for a form of complicated hereditary spastic parapleg.a (cHSP). ALS2 g.ne encodes a protein termed alsin, containing.multiple g.anine nucleotide exchang. factor domains, specifically binding.to small g.Pase Rab5 and acting.as a g.F for Rab5. In vitro studies performed with full-leng.h and truncating.forms of alsin protein support its role in endosomal dynamics and trafficking.of mitochondria. All ALS2 mutations so far reported g.nerate alsin protein truncation. Here, we describe the first homozyg.us missense mutation in ALS2, p.g.40E. The mutation, which falls within the RCC1 domain, was identified in a 34-year-old patient with typical sig.s of JPLS such as ascending.g.neralized and severe spasticity involving.the limbs and the bulbar reg.on, dysphag.a, limb atrophy, preserved cog.ition and sensation. The father and two proband’s sisters were found to be heterozyg.us carriers of the mutation with no sig.s of the disease. (Studies in the neuronal cell line SK-N-BE indicated that the known subcellular localization of wild-type alsin with the early endosome antig.n 1, in enlarg.d endosomal structures, and transferrin receptor is completely lost by the mutant protein, thus indicating.that this mutation leads to protein delocalization.) Mutant alsin induced neuronal death itself and also sig.ificantly enhanced the apoptog.nic effect of NMDA and staurosporine. This effect was associated with decreased Bcl-xL : Bax ratio. Mag.etic resonance imag.ng.MRI) is a reliable and accurate imag.ng.method for the evaluation of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC). Diffusion-weig.ted imag.ng.DWI) is a relatively recent technolog.cal improvement that expanded MRI capabilities, having.broug.t functional aspects into conventional morpholog.c MRI evaluation. DWI can depict the random diffusion of water molecules within tissues(the so-called Brownian motions). Modifications of water diffusion induced by different factors acting.on the extracellular and intracellular spaces, as increased cell density, edema, fibrosis, or altered functionality of cell membranes, can be detected using.this MR sequence. The intravoxel incoherent motion(IVIM) model is an advanced DWI technique that consent a separate quantitative evaluation of all the microscopic random motions that contribute to DWI, which are essentially represented by molecular diffusion and blood microcirculation(perfusion). Technolog.cal improvements have made possible the routine use of DWI during.abdominal MRI study. Several authors have reported that the addition of DWI sequence can be of value for the evaluation of patients with PDAC, especially improving.the stag.ng. nevertheless, it is still unclear whether and how DWI could be helpful for identification, characterization, prog.ostic stratification and follow-up during.treatment. The aim of this paper is to review up-to-date literature data reg.rding.the applications of DWI and IVIM to PDACs.
