Dear Editor,Monkeypox is a zoonosis caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV)infection first reported in Central and West Africa[1]. The first outbreak of monkeypox outside of Africa was reported in2003[2].Afterthat,Israel,theUnitedKingdom(UK),Singapore, and other countries have reported monkeypox cases among travelers back from Nigeria since 2018[3].

Previously,it was assumed that peripheral neutrophils are a homogeneous population that displays antimicrobial functions.However,recent data have revealed that neutrophils are heterogeneous and are additionally involved in tissue damage and immune regulation.The phenotypic and functional plasticity of neutrophils has been identified in patients with cancer,inflammatory disorders,infections,and other diseases.Currently,neutrophils,with their autocrine,paracrine,and immune modulation functions,have been shown to be involved in liver diseases,including viral hepatitis,nonalcoholic steatohepatitis,alcoholic liver disease,liver fibrosis,cirrhosis,liver failure,and liver cancer.Accordingly,this review summarizes the role of neutrophils in liver diseases.

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic poses a great threat to public health.Individuals who are immunocompromised because of the progression of the primary disease or receiving immunosuppressive medications are prone to severe COVID-19 complications and poor outcomes.Abundant data have shown that many COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective in large-scale populations;however,these clinical trials have excluded immunocompromised populations.Available evidence indicates that immunocompromised populations have a blunted immune response to other vaccines,raising concerns regarding the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccination in these populations.Thus,there is an urgent need to delineate the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines in these vulnerable populations.Here,we review the characteristics of specific humoral and cellular responses to COVID-19 vaccination in immunocompromised populations,including HIV-infected patients and those receiving immunosuppressive treatment,especially solid organ transplant recipients and those undergoing anti-CD20 treatment.We also addressed the challenges that immunocompromised populations will face in the future pandemic and the need for basic and clinical translational studies to highlight the best vaccination strategies for these populations.

Virtual memory T(TVM)cells were first described 13 years ago in mice as a specialized subset of CD8+T cells that are semi-differentiated,antigen-naïve,and characterized by a memory phenotype and functionality[1].A putative TVM cell subset has been identified in humans for its presence in cord blood,indicating that it does not necessarily have to be antigen experienced[2].

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection has resulted in numerous confirmed cases and deaths worldwide.Recent studies have shown that people living with HIV(PLWH)are prone to develop severe illness and poor outcomes if they experience coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),especially those with uncontrolled viremia and low CD4 T-cell count.Therefore,many countries prioritized PLWH for COVID-19 vaccination.However,lower magnitude or faster waning humoral immune responses elicited by other vaccines have been documented in PLWH,raising concerns regarding the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine in these specific populations.Here,we summarize the current progress in the immunogenicity and efficacy of different types of SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations in PLWH and highlight several challenges faced by PLWH in the current COVID-19 pandemics.

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has caused a tremendous burden on public health and world economies.An efficient host immune response to acute SARS-CoV-2 infection requires rapid and early activation of the innate immune system.Natural killer(NK)cells represent a critical component of the innate immunity.Here,the appearance of CD56-CD16+NK cells and unconventional CD56^(dim) CD16^(neg) NK cells during the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection,and the phenotype and effector functions of NK cells during SARS-CoV-2 infection were summarized.The involvement of the dysregulated NK cells in the immunopathogenesis of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)and clinical trials of adoptive NK cell–based therapies against COVID-19 were also discussed.

Middle East respiratory syndrome(MERS),severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS),and SARS-CoV-2 infection(causing coronavirus disease 2019[COVID-19])are serious diseases.To date,no effective post-exposure prophylaxis,prevention,or therapeutic agents are recommended as effective for these diseases.Convalescent plasma(CP),donated by individuals with established humoral immunity to the virus after recovering from coronavirus infection,has been successfully applied to treat several infectious diseases,including SARS,MERS,and COVID-19.Nonetheless,there are obstacles and challenges to using CP that should be taken into account.In this review,we summarize the evidence derived from clinical attempts to treat COVID-19 with CP,which represents a promising therapy for severe coronavirus infection.furthermore,we outline the remaining challenges and general issues that should be considered when using CP treatment for therapeutic or prophylactic purposes.

The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 has threatened humans for more than one and a half years.In particular,viral mutation like delta strain has led to third-or fourth-wave transmission among the countries in Asia,Europe,and North America.Although large-scale vaccination has been carried out in many countries,the incidence of reinfection and vaccine-past breakthrough infection is becoming an emerging challenge to humans worldwide.The related mechanisms underlying the reinfection and breakthrough infection remain unknown.In this review,we summarized the challenge and related reasons for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 reinfection and breakthrough infection.Simultaneously,we addressed some critical contents of the study in future.

A recent study revealed that the inhibition of the farnesoid X receptor using ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA)significantly reduces angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2)expression.Therefore,considerable attention has been paid to the use of UDCA to prevent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection and reduce the severity of the disease.This review compre-hensively summarizes the role of ACE2 in SARS-CoV-2 infection and the potential role and mechanisms of UDCA in the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection or reinfection.It also discusses unresolved issues and the potential use of UDCA in the treatment of patients with coronavirus disease.
