Androgens have potent anabolic effects on skeletal muscle and decline with age in parallel to losses in muscle mass and strength. This loss of muscle mass and function, known as sarcopenia, is the central event in development of frailty, the vulnerable health status that presages adverse outcomes and rapid functional decline in older adults. The potential role of falling androgen levels in the development of frailty and their utility as function promoting therapies in older men has therefore attracted considerable attention. This review summarizes current concepts and definitions in muscle ageing, sarcopenia and frailty, and evaluates recent developments in the study of androgens and frailty. Current evidence from observational and interventional studies strongly supports an effect of androgens on muscle mass in ageing men, but effects on muscle strength and particularly physical function have been less clear. Androgen treatment has been generally well-tolerated in studies of older men, but concerns remain over higher dose treatments and use in populations with high cardiovascular risk. The first trials of selective androgen receptor modulators （SARMs） suggest similar effects on muscle mass and function to traditional androgen therapies in older adults. Important future directions include the use of these agents in combination with exercise training to promote functional ability across different populations of older adults, as well as more focus on the relationships between concurrent changes in hormone levels, body composition and physical function in observational studies.

Quality evaluation of synthetic quorum sensing peptides used in R&D

Peptides are becoming an important class of molecules in the pharmaceutical field. Closely related peptide-impurities in peptides are inherent to the synthesis approach and have demonstrated to potentially mask biomedical experimental results. Quorum sensing peptides are attracting high interest in R＆D and therefore a representative set of quorum sensing peptides, with a requested purity of at least 95.0%, was evaluated for their purity and nature of related impurities. In-house quality control （QC） revealed a large discrepancy between the purity levels as stated on the supplier＇s certificate of analysis and our QC results. By using our QC analysis flowchart, we demonstrated that only 44.0% of the peptides met the required purity. The main compound of one sample was even found to have a different structure compared to the desired peptide. We also found that the majority of the related impurities were lacking amino acid（s） in the desired peptide sequence. Relying on the certificates of analysis as provided by the supplier might have serious consequences for peptide research, and peptide-researchers should implement and maintain a thorough in-house QC.

采用颗粒流PFC数值模拟方法,生成符合标准砂室内单元试验结果的离散元数值试验试样。运用重力沉积法建立不规则砂土颗粒单元的平面双轴试验模型,给定不同沉积步数对试样不同初始原生状态进行模拟,然后分别从水平和竖直方向上施加荷载增量,得到不同沉积条件下不同加载方向上砂土试样宏观应力应变曲线和力学参数。数值试验结果显示,重力沉积步数对颗粒微观长轴定向排列、平均配位数有显著影响;初步建立了砂土微观结构变化和宏观应力应变曲线及力学参数的联系;分析了砂土试样表现出的宏观原生各向异性力学特性与内部颗粒结构的关系。

Androgens have important effects on .multiple organ systems, which play critical roles in the regulation of a myriad of male sexual, somatic, and behavioral functions critical to lifelong health. Androgen deficiency is a multisystem syndrome, presenting with typical clinical features in association with a confirmed low serum testosterone level. The clinical presentation of androgen deficiency is modified by age and other patient-specific characteristics such as comorbidities, genetic, environmental, and sociocultural factors.

Carcinoid of the ampulla of Vater: Morphologic features and clinical implications

Carcinoids involving the ampulla of Vater are rare le- sions that may produce painless jaundice. The published data indicate that these tumors, in contrast to their midgut counterparts, metastasize in approximately half of cases irrespective of primary tumor size. Therefore, radical excision in the form of pancreaticoduodenectomy is recommended regardless of tumor size. As with other gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors, biological treatment with octreotide analogues can be applied to symptomatic patients. Tumor-targeted radioactive therapy is a newly emerging treatment option. We here report case of a carcinoid tumor of the ampulla of Vater presenting as painless jaundice in a 65-year old man and review the relevant literature, giving special attention to the mor- phologic features, clinical characteristics, and treatment modalities associated with this disease process.

Resistive random access memory (RRAM or ReRAM) is a non-volatile memory (NVM) technology that consumes minimal energy while offering sub-nanosecond switching. In addition, the data stability against high temperature and cycling wear is very robust, allowing new NVM applications in a variety of markets (au- tomotive, embedded, storage, RAM). Based on sudden conduction through oxide insulators, the characteristics of RRAM technology have still yet to be fully described. In this paper, we present our current understanding of this very promising technology.

ACTIVATION OF NATURAL KILLER CELLS WITH 3,6-BIS (2-PIPERIDINOETHOXY) ACRIDINE TRIHYDROCHLORIDE (CL 246, 738)

The mechanism of action of 3,6-bis(***-thoxy) acridine trihydrochloride (CL 246,738) in the potentiation of natural killer (NK) cells was investigated. Orally administered CL 246,738 consistently produced enhancement of NK cell activity in mice. Using anti-asialo GM-1 (ASGM-1) antibody as an NK cell marker, it was determined that the compound increased the number of ASGM-1 positive cells in mice as indicated by immunofluorescence staining. The compound at concentrations of 0.02-0.2 μg/ml also induced NK cell activity in vitro. This effect was dependent upon the presence of macrophages and was inhibited by anti-IFN (alpha+beta), but not anti-lFN (beta) antibody. Taken together, it is postulated that the compound functions by stimulating macrophages to release IFN (alpha) which subsequently activates NK cells. As an effective stimulator of IFN and NK cells, CL 246,738 may prove clinically useful in the immunotherapy of certain types of malignancy.
