Impacts of fire and phosphorus on sawgrass and cattails in an altered landscape of the Florida Everglades

Introduction:Although fire as a critical ecological process shapes the Florida Everglades landscape,researchers lack landscape-based approach for fire *** interactive effect of fire,nutrients,water depth,and invasive cattails(Typha spp.)on vegetation communities is of special concern for ecosystem *** particular,questions concerning the effect of fire on nutrient release and,by extension,the potential thereof to stimulate sawgrass(Cladium jamaicense Crantz)re-growth and cattail expansion under varying hydrological conditions are of immediate relevance to ecologists and land managers who work to restore the ***:In late April of 1999,a 42,875 ha surface fire,including a 100 ha peat fire,burned the northern section of Water Conservation Area 3A(WCA-3A)in the *** this study,total phosphorus(TP)in soil,surface water,pore-water,and vegetation was sampled at non-burned,surface-burned and peat-burned areas within one and five months after the *** years after the initial fire,field data were collected in a large scale survey to analyze how the 1999 fire affected cattail distribution in the altered landscape of high soil TP and cattail *** GIS maps were utilized to select field sampling locations and to provide additional information for the ***:The analyses showed that five months after the fire,sawgrass biomass re-growth was about 5 times higher in burned areas(611±47 g/m^(2))than in non-burned areas(102±18 g/m^(2)).Sawgrass re-growth in water depths less than 30 cm was 4.9±0.4 g/m^(2)/day while sawgrass re-growth in water depths deeper than 60 cm decreased to 0.5±0.3 g/m^(2)/*** biomass re-growth in peat-burned areas was as high as 1,079±38 g/m^(2).The data also showed that post-fire cattail expansion could be related to cattail stands existing before the ***,post-fire cattail appeared more significant expansion in the areas with soil TP above 900 mg/kg than in that with so

Rumen liquor from slaughtered cattle as inoculum for feed evaluation

Use of nonlinear mathematical models has been majorly based on in vitro gas production(GP) data generated when substrates are incubated with rumen liquor from fistulated steers. however,existing evidence suggests that rumen liquor from slaughtered cattle of unknown dietary history also generates quantifiable in vitro GP data. Fitting and description of GP data obtained from 4 diets incubated with rumen liquor from slaughtered cattle was evaluated using single-pool exponential model with discrete lag time(EXPL), logistic(LOG), Groot's(GRTS) and Gompertz(GOMP) models. Diets were formulated by varying proportions of Rhodes grass(Chloris gayana) hay and a concentrate mixed on dry matter basis to be: 1,000 g/kg Rhodes grass hay(RGh) and 0 of the concentrate(D1), 900 g/kg RGh and 100 g/kg concentrate(D2), 800 g/kg RGh and 200 g/kg concentrate(D3), 700 g/kg RGh and 300 g/kg concentrate(D4). Dietary kinetics for the models were determined by measuring GP at 2,4.8,10.18,24.36,48.72,96 and 120 h. Model comparison was based on derived GP kinetics, graphical analysis of observed versus predicted GP profiles plus residual distribution and goodness-of-fit from analysis of root mean square error(RMSE), adjusted coefficient of determination(Adj-R^2) and Akaike's information criterion(AIC). Asymptotic GP, half-life and fractional rate of GP differed(P he 4 models. The RMSE, Adj-R^2 and AIC ranged from 1.555 to 4.429,0.906 to0.984 and 2.452 to 15.874, respectively, forall diets compared across the 4 models. Based on the goodness-of-fit statistical criterion, GP profiles of D1 were more appropriately fitted and described by GRTS and GOMP than the EXPLand LOG models. The GRTS model had the lowest AIC value for D2(2.452). “I Want to Feel That I Live in China”:Imaginaries and hospitality in International Students’(mis-)Encounters at a Top Chinese University

Research on international students’experiences abroad has tended to rely on models of adjustment,integration and/or acculturation to describe their(mis-)encounters with different kinds of people(e.g.,co-nationals,locals and other international students).This paper proposes to use the more fluid concepts of imaginaries and hospitality,leaving behind stages and phases of adaption and acculturation,and focusing on the influence of the Structure on their *** on a discursive pragmatic analysis of interview data with 20 international students at a top Chinese university,the authors review how the students describe the kind of hospitality experienced at this institution and the influence that it has on their(mis-)***,differentialist and essentialist imaginaries(static and fixed views of Chineseness)are often used to justify the lack of encounters and the“segregation”and somewhat“positive discrimination”that they ***,the paper shows that,amongst others,the institutional hospitality management for international students leads to closed contexts of encounters and feelings of *** the study serves as a case study and cannot be generalized to the many and varied experiences of international students in other universities in China,some recommendations are made to solve,at least in part,misconceptions about what interculturality and hospitality entail in the internationalization of higher education.

Identifying grey-rhino in eminent technologies via patent analysis

Purpose:Following the typical features of the grey-rhino event as predictability and profound influence,we attempt to find a special pattern called the grey-rhino in eminent technologies via patent ***/methodology/approach:We propose to combine triadic patent families and technology life cycle to define the grey-rhino ***,we design the indicator rhino-index Rh=ST/SP and descriptor sequence{Rh},where ST and SP are the accumulative number of triadic patent families and all patent families respectively for a specific ***,according to the two typical features of the grey-rhino event,a grey-rhino is defined as a technology that meets both qualitative and quantitative ***,this technology has a profound ***,in the emerging stage,Rh≥Rae,where Rae is the average level of the proportion of triadic patent ***,this model is verified in three datasets,namely Encyclopedia Britannica’s list for the greatest inventions(EB technologies for short),MIT breakthrough technologies(MIT technologies)and Derwent Manual Code technologies(MAN technologies).Findings:The result shows that there are 64.71%EB technologies and 50.00%MIT technologies meeting the quantitative standard of the grey-rhino model,but only 14.71%MAN technologies fit the quantitative *** falling trend indicates the quantitative standard of the grey-rhino model is *** technologies and MIT technologies have profound influence on society,which means they satisfy the qualitative standard of the grey-rhino ***,64.71%EB technologies and 50.00%MIT technologies are *** 14.71%MAN technologies meeting the quantitative standard,we make some qualitative judgments and deem U11-A01A,U12-A01A1A,and W01-A01A as grey-rhino *** addition,grey-rhinos and non-grey-rhinos have some *** values of grey-rhinos have a downward trend,while Rh values of non-grey-rhinos have a contrary *** valu

Robust h_∞ control for aseismic structures with uncertainties in model parameters

This paper presents a robust h∞ output feedback control approach for structural systems with uncertainties in model parameters by using available acceleration measurements and proposes conditions for the existence of such a robust output feedback controller. The uncertainties of structural stiffness, damping and mass parameters are assumed to be norm-bounded. The proposed control approach is formulated within the framework of linear matrix inequalities, for which existing convex optimization techniques, such as the LM1 toolbox in MATLAB, can be used effectively and conveniently. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust h∞ strategy, a six-story building was subjected both to the 1940 E1 Centro earthquake record and to a suddenly applied Kanai-Tajimi filtered white noise random excitation. The results show that the proposed robust h∞ controller provides satisfactory results with or without variation of the structural stiffness, damping and mass parameters.

The pristine point of zero charge(p.p.z.c)and zeta potential as a function of ph of boehmite oxide/hydroxide(α-Al_(2)O_(3)·h_(2)O)have been determined for three filter *** active component in the first two filter media is boehmite nanofibers,only 2 nm in diameter and about 300 nm *** nanofibers create high zeta potential(ζtrue≥46 mV)in aqueous solutions in the ph range of 3–*** *** were determined to be 11.60±0.15 for nanofibers grafted onto microglass fibers and 11.40±0.15 for agglomerated *** the third filter media,a boehmite nanolayer in the form of monocrystalline oxide/hydroxide with a thickness of approximately 1.2 nm is electroadhesively deposited onto siliceous support material with large surface area of about 50 m^(2)/g,therefore forming a highly electropositive composite of boehmite nanolayer on the second highly electronegative ***’s oxide-hydroxide nanolayer surface creates high zeta potential(ζtrue≥50 mV)in aqueous solutions in the ph range of 3–*** *** was determined to be 11.38±*** reported values are within accuracy,but they are much higher than the values reported in the literature.X-ray powder diffraction data were supplemented by microscopy,infrared spectroscopy in order to characterize fully synthetic boehmite surfaces.
