Background and Aims:Hepatocellular ballooning is a common finding in chronic liver disease,mainly characterized by rarefied cytoplasm that often contains Mallory-denk bodies(MDB).Ballooning has mostly been attributed to degeneration but its striking resemblance to glycogenotic/steatotic changes characterizing preneoplastic hepatocellular lesions in animal models and chronic human liver diseases prompts the question whether ballooned hepatocytes(BH)are damaged cells on the path to death or rather viable cells,possibly involved in neoplastic ***:Using specimens from 96 cirrhotic human livers,BH characteristics were assessed for their glycogen/lipid stores,enzyme activities,and proto-oncogenic signaling cascades by enzyme-and immunohistochemical approaches with serial paraffin and cryostat ***:BH were present in 43.8%of cirrhotic *** pronounced excess glycogen storage of(glycogenosis)and/or lipids(steatosis)were characteristic,ground glass features and MDB were often *** glucose-6-phosphatase,increased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and altered immunoreactivity of enzymes involved in glycolysis,lipid metabolism,and cholesterol biosynthesis were ***,components of the insulin signaling cascade were upregulated along with insulin dependent glucose transporter glucose transporter 4 and the v-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homolog/mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway associated with de novo ***:BH are hallmarked by particularly pronounced glycogenosis with facultative steatosis,many of their features being reminiscent of metabolic aberrations documented in preneoplastic hepatocellular lesions in experimental animals and chronic human liver ***,BH are not damaged entities facing death but rather viable cells featuring metabolic reprogramming,indicative of a preneoplastic nature.

Background: The evolutionary profile of patients operated for peptic ulcer perforation in Bujumbura. Perforated peptic ulcer is a serious complication of peptic ulcer with potential risk of grave complications. Aim: To study the early morbidity and mortality of surgery for peptic ulcer perforation in Bujumbura City Hall hospitals: Kamenge University Hospital Center (CHUK), Kamenge Military Hospital (HMK) and Prince Louis Rwagasore Clinic (CPLR). Patients and methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study carried out in the three hospitals of Bujumbura over a period of three years from January 1, 2020 to december 31, 2022. It involved 57 cases (n = 57) of peptic ulcer perforation. Results: The frequency of surgery for peptic ulcer perforation was 2.7% with a mean age of 43.6 years +/- 15.3 years and a male predominance with a sex ratio of 3.7. Eight percent of patients presented with shock, 24.5% were smokers, and 67.9% had taken non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The mean hospital stay was 15.2 days with a standard deviation of 12.1. The morbidity rate was 30.2%, 32% were classified in grade IIIb of the Clavien-Dindo Surgical Complications Scale. There were 9 deaths (17%). Seven patients who underwent surgery and received late consultations died. Conclusion: Surgery for peptic ulcer perforation remains an intervention associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality in Bujumbura. Surgery for peptic ulcer perforation remains a procedure associated with a high morbidity and mortality rate in Bujumbura. The time before consultation was the only factor associated with early morbidity and mortality of Surgery for peptic ulcer’s perforations.

In view of its use as reactivity theory,Conceptual density Functional Theory(DFT),introduced by Parr et al.,has mainly concentrated up to now on the E = E[N,v] ***,different ensemble representations can be used involving other variables also,such as ρ and μ.In this study,these different ensemble representations(E,?,F,and R) are briefly *** attention is then given to the corresponding second-order(functional) derivatives,and their analogieswith the second-order derivatives of thermodynamic state functions U,F,H,and G,which are related to each other via Legendre transformations,just as the DFT functionals(Nalewajski and Parr,1982).Starting from an analysis of the convexity/concavity of the DFT functionals,for which explicit proofs are discussed for some cases,the positive/negative definiteness of the associated kernels is derived and a detailed comparison is made with the thermodynamic *** stability conditions in thermodynamics are similar in structure to the convexity/concavity conditions for the DFT ***,the DFT functionals are scrutinized based on the convexity/concavity of their two variables,to yield the possibility of establishing a relationship between the three second-order reactivity descriptors derived from the considered *** two ensemble representations,F and ?,F is eliminated as it has two dependent(extensive)variables,N and ρ.For ?,on the other hand,which is concave for both of its intensive variables(μ and υ),an inequality is derived from its three second-order(functional) derivatives:the global softness,the local softness,and the softness *** with the negative value of the diagonal element of the linear response function,this inequality is shown to be compatible with the Berkowitz-Parr relationship,which relates the functional derivatives of ρ with υ,at constant N and μ.This was recently at stake upon quantifying Kohn's Nearsightedness of Electronic *** analogy

Background:Data from RNA-seq experiments prov.de a wealth of information about the transcriptome of an ***,the analysis of such data is very *** this study,we aimed to establish robust analysis procedures that can be used in clinical ***:We studied RNA-seq data from triple-negative breast cancer ***,we investigated the subsampling of RNA-seq ***:The main results of our investigations are as follows:(1) the subsampling of RNA-seq data gave biologically realistic simulations of sequencing experiments with smaller sequencing depth but not direct scaling of count matrices;(2) the saturation of results required an average sequencing depth larger than 32 million reads and an individual sequencing depth larger than 46 million reads;and(3) for an abrogated feature selection,higher moments of the distribution of all expressed genes had a higher sensitivity for signal detection than the corresponding mean ***:Our results reveal important characteristics of RNA-seq data that must be understood before one can apply such an approach to translational medicine.
