Let v be a positive integer and let K be a set of positive integers. A （v, K, 1）-mendelsohn design, which we denote briefly by （v, K, 1）-mD, is a pair （X, B） where X is a v-set （of points） and B is a collection of cyclically ordered subsets of X （called blocks） with sizes in the set K such that every ordered pair of points of X are consecutive in exactly one block of B. If for all t =1, 2,..., r, every ordered pair of points of X are t-apart in exactly one block of B, then the （v, K, 1）-mD is called an r-fold perfect design and denoted briefly by an r-fold perfect （v, K, 1）-mD. If K = {k） and r = k - 1, then an r-fold perfect （v, （k）, 1）-mD is essentially the more familiar （v, k, 1）-perfect mendelsohn design, which is briefly denoted by （v, k, 1）-PmD. In this paper, we investigate the existence of 4-fold perfect （v, （5, 8}, 1）-mendelsohn designs.

Introduction: middle ear volume(mEV) is a clinically relevant parameter across middle ear diseases. mEV values between these techniques have never before been tested for agreement in ears with perforated tympanic membranes(Tms).methods: middle ears were identified from 36 patients ranging 18-89 years of age with Tm perforations who underwent tympanometry and temporal bone computed tomography(CT) between 2005 and 2015. mEVs calculated by both tympanometry and three-dimensional volume reconstruction(3DVR) were analyzed for agreement using Bland Altman plots. The differences between tympanometric and 3DVR mEV values for each given middle ear were characterized across mEV quartiles(1= smallest; 4= largest) and across increasing states of middle ear disease using Kruskale Wallis and Wilcoxon testing with Bonferroni ***: Bland Altman plots demonstrated significant disagreement between mEV measurement techniques. Differences between tympanometric(T) and 3DVR mEV values were significantly greater with increasing average(i.e.(Tt3DVR)/2)) mEV per linear regression(p monstrated between fourth and first average mEV quartiles(p= 0.0024), fourth and second quartiles(p= 0.0024), third and first quartiles(p= 0.0048), and third and second quartiles(p= 0.048). Absolute mEV difference was not significantly different across varying states of middle ear disease(p= 0.44).Conclusion: Statistically and clinically significant disagreement was demonstrated between tympanometric and 3DVR mEV values. Studies that vary in mEV estimation techniques may be expected to demonstrate significantly different results. These preliminary results suggest that clinicians should endeavor to seek further confirmation when interpreting high tympanometric mEV values.

Objectives: Recent studies have introduced middle ear volume(mEV) as a novel determinant of perforation-induced conductive hearing loss(CHL) in a mechanism driven by trans-tympanic membrane pressure differences. The primary aims of this preliminary report are to: 1) correlate CHL with perforation size; 2) describe the relationship between CHL and mEV; and 3) compare CHL across a range of cholesteatoma ***: A retrospective pilot study was performed in 31 subjects with audiometry indicative of conductive hearing loss, temporal bone CT scans,and no prior middle ear surgery. Perforation size and mEV were analyzed with respect to CHL in a cohort of 10 perforated ears with no cholesteatoma. CHLs were compared in 3 groups defined by extent of cholesteatoma ***: Ears with large and small perforations showed mean ABG values of 32.0 ± 15.7 dB and 16.0 ± 16.4 dB, respectively. A direct relationship was observed between mEV and CHL for ears with large perforations across all frequencies, whereas this relationship for small perforations was frequency-dependent. Finally, a statistically significant increase in CHL was found across ears with increasing cholesteatoma involvement at 1000 Hz(X^2(2) = 9.786, p = 0.008),2000 Hz(x^2(2) = 8.455, p = 0.015),and 4000 Hz(x^2(2)= 8.253, p = 0.016).Conclusions: These pilot data suggest that greater perforation-induced conductive hearing losses may be associated with larger perforation sizes and cholesteatoma. The correlation between mEV and CHL may require additional study.

Trans-acting small interfering RNAs （ta-siRNAs） are plant-specific siRNAs released from TAS precursor tran- scripts after microRNA-dependent cleavage, conversion into double-stranded RNA, and Dicer-dependent phased process- ing. Like microRNAs （miRNAs）, ta-siRNAs direct site-specific cleavage of target RNAs at sites of extensive complementarity. Here, we show that the DICER-LIKE 4 protein of Physcomitrella patens （PpDCL4） is essential for the biogenesis of 21 nucleotide （nt） ta-siRNAs. In APpDCL4 mutants, off-sized 23 and 24-nt ta-siRNAs accumulated as the result of PpDCL3 activity. APpDCL4 mutants display severe abnormalities throughout Physcomitrella development, including sterility, that were fully reversed in APpDCL3/APpDCL4 double-mutant plants. Therefore, PpDCL3 activity, not loss of PpDCL4 function per se, is the cause of the APpDCL4 phenotypes. Additionally, we describe several new Physcomitrella trans-acting siRNA loci, three of which belong to a new family, TA56. TAS6 loci are typified by sliced miR156 and miR529 target sites and are in close proximity to PpTAS3 loci.

maize leaves are produced from polarized cell divisions that result in clonal cell lineages arrayed along the long axis of the leaf. We utilized this stereotypical division pattern to identify a collection of mutants that form chloroplast pigmentation sectors that violate the clonal cell lineages. Here, we describe the camouflage1 （cfl） mutant, which develops nonclonal, yellow-green sectors in its leaves. We cloned the cfl gene by transposon tagging and determined that it encodes porphobilinogen deaminase （PBGD）, an enzyme that functions early in chlorophyll and heme biosynthesis. While PBGD has been characterized biochemically, no viable mutations in this gene have been reported in plants. To investigate the in vivo function of PBGD, we characterized the cfl mutant. Histological analyses revealed that cfl yellow sectors display the novel phenotype of bundle sheath cell-specific death. Light-shift experiments determined that constant light suppressed cfl sector formation, a dark/light transition is required to induce yellow sectors, and that sectors form only during a limited time of leaf development. Biochemical experiments determined that of 1 mutant leaves have decreased PBGD activity and increased levels of the enzyme substrate in both green and yellow regions. Furthermore, the cfl yellow regions displayed a reduction in catalase activity. A threshold model is hypothesized to explain the cfl variegation and incorporates photosynthetic cell differentiation, reactive oxygen species scavenging, and PBGD function.

The aim of this report was to describe the feasibility, overall survival and quality of life of combining multimodal therapy with a complementary therapy concept called LOTUS Care Cure program. The peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) working group described their observations on the combination of multimodal therapy with a complementary therapy concept based on 132 patients with different cancer entities with suspected PC. PC was not confirmed by laparoscopy in 32.5% of the patients included in the working group of patients with suspected PC. Patient compliance and the feasibility were high. For Ki67, there is a cut-off at 45% with a slower progression at 45%. The higher the Karnofsky index, the more improved the therapy and tolerability, with a cut-off of 80%. Overall, 72.0% of patients died. The median survival time in the overall population was 3.74 years (95% CI, 2.57 to 4.91) with a sharp decline in the first 16 weeks. The quality of life of patients can be improved with the implementation of the complementary LOTUS Care Cure Project. Overall, the therapy of PC requires a multi-professional team of therapists and a multimodal therapy concept. The multimodal concept together with the Lotus Care Cure project shows very good feasibility with high compliance and ultimately leads to better and low-risk patient care.

The association between sexual function and prostate cancer risk in US veterans

Sexual dysfunction and prostate cancer are common among older men. Few studies explored the association between these two illnesses. We examined whether sexual function is associated with prostate cancer risk among older men. Among 448 men undergoing prostate biopsy at the Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital, sexual function was ascertained from the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite sexual assessment. We tested the link between sexual function and prostate cancer risk adjusting for multiple demographic and clinical characteristics using logistic regression. multinomial logistic regression was used to test the associations with risk of low-grade （Gleason 〈6） and high-grade （Gleason 〉7 or 〉4 ＋ 3） disease versus no cancer. Of 448 men, 209 （47%） had a positive biopsy; these men were less likely to be white （43% vs 55%, P=0.013）, had higher prostate-specific antigen （PSA）（6.0 vs 5.4 ng ml-1, P 〈 0.001）, but with lower mean sexual function score （47 vs 54, P = 0.007）. There was no difference in age, BmI, pack years smoked, history of heart disease and/or diabetes. After adjusting for baseline differences, sexual function was linked with a decreased risk of overall prostate cancer risk （OR. 0.91 per lO-point change in sexual function, P= 0.004） and high-grade disease whether defined as Gleason ≥7 （OR： 0.86, P= 0.001） or 〉4 ＋ 3 （OR： 0.85, P= 0.009）. Sexual function was unrelated to low-grade prostate cancer （OR： 0.94, P = 0.13）. Thus, among men undergoing prostate biopsy, higher sexual function was associated with a decreased risk of overall and high-grade prostate cancer. Confirmatory studies are needed.
