EnsO impacts on litter stocks and water holding capacity in secondary forests in eastern Amazonia

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El niño south-ern Oscillation(EnsO)responsible for El niño and La niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of EnsO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El niño(2019)and least in La niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of EnsO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

The effectiveness of monitoring and early-warning systems for ground deformation phenomena,such as sinkholes,depends on their ability to accurately resolve the ongoing ground displacement and detect the subtle deformation preceding catastrophic *** sinkholes with a slow subsidence rate and diffuse edges pose a significant challenge for subsidence monitoring due to the low deformation rates and limited lateral strain *** this work,we satisfactorily illustrate the practicality of the Brillouin optical time domain analysis(BOTDA)to measure the spatial-temporal patterns of the vertical displacement in such challenging slow-moving sagging *** assess the performance of the approach,we compare the strain recorded by the distributed optical fiber sensor with the vertical displacement measured by high-precision *** results show a good spatial correlation with the ability to identify the maximum subsidence *** is also a good temporal correlation with the detection of an acceleration phase in the subsidence associated with a flood event.

We calculate numerically the optical chiral forces in rectangular cross-section dielectric waveguides for potential enantiomer *** study considers force strength and time needed for separating chiral nanoparticles,mainly via quasi-TE guided modes at short wavelengths(405 nm)and the 90°-phase-shifted combination of quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes at longer wavelengths(1310 nm).Particle tracking simulations show successful enantiomer separation within two *** results suggest the feasibility of enantiomeric separation of nanoparticles displaying sufficient chirality using simple silicon photonic integrated circuits,with wavelength selection based on the nanoparticle size.

Purpose:This study aimed to examine the associations of accelerometer-derived steps volume and intensity with hospitalizations and all-cause mortality in older ***:This prospective cohort study involved 768 community-dwelling spanish older adults(78.8±4.9 years,mean±sD;53.9% females)from the Toledo study for Healthy Aging(2012-2017).The number of steps per day and step cadence(steps/min) were derived from a hip-mounted accelerometer worn for at least 4 days at *** were followed-up over a mean period of 3.1 years for hospitalization and 5.7 years for all-cause *** proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the individual and joint associations between daily steps and stepping intensity with hospitalizations and all-cause ***:Included participants walked 5835± 3445 steps/day with an intensity of 7.3± 4.1 steps/*** adjusting for age,sex,body mass index(BMI),education,income,marital status and comorbidities,higher step count(hazard ratio(HR)=0.95,95% confidence interval(95%CI:0.90-1.00,and HR=0.87,95%CI:0.81-0.95 per additional 1000 steps) and higher step intensity(HR=0.95,95%CI:0.91-0.99,and HR=0.89,95%CI:0.84-0.95 per each additional step/min) were associated with fewer hospitalizations and all-cause mortality risk,*** to the group having low step volume and intensity,individuals in the group having high step volume and intensity had a lower risk of hospitalization(HR=0.72,95%CI:0.52-0.98) and all-cause mortality(HR=0.60,95%CI:0.37-0.98).Conclusion:Among older adults,both high step volume and step intensity were significantly associated with lower hospitalization and all-cause mortality *** step volume and intensity may benefit older people.

Cover crops have long been proposed as an alternative soil management for minimizing erosion rates in olive stands while providing additional ecosystem ***,the trade-off between these benefits and the competition for water with the trees makes the definition of optimal management practices a challenging task in semiarid *** work presents an improved version of OliveCan,a process-based simulation model of olive orchards that now can simulate the main impacts of cover crops on the water and carbon balances of olive *** simple in its formulation,the new model components were developed to deal with different cover crop management *** are presented for simulation runs of a traditional olive orchard in the conditions of southern spain,evaluating the effects of different widths for the strip occupied by the cover crop(Fcc)and two contrasting mowing *** revealed that high Fccresulted in lower olive yields,but only when mowing was applied at the end of *** this regard,late mowing and high Fccwas associated with lower soil water content from spring to summer,coinciding with olive flowering and the earlier stages of fruit *** also negatively correlated with surface runoff irrespective of the mowing *** the other hand,net ecosystem productivity(nEP)was substantially affected by both Fccand mowing *** simulations under future climate scenarios comparing the same management alternatives are also presented,showing substantial yield reductions by the end of the century and minor or negligible changes in nEP and seasonal runoff.
