Testing semiochemicals from aphid, plant and conspecific： attraction of Harmonia axyridis

Harmonia axyridis Pallas （Coleoptera： Coccinellidae） is an invasive specie affecting the dynamics and composition of several guilds. Nowadays, no biological control method is available to reduce the populations of this harmful coccinellid. Attractants and semiochemicals seem to be the best alternative but only few studies have tested the impact of semiochemicals on this Asian lady beetle. In this work, through wind- tunnel experiments, semiochemicals from aphids （Z,E-nepetalactone, [E]-β-farnesene, a-pinene and β-pinene）, from coccinellids （[-]-β-earyophyllene） and from the nettle Urtica dioica l. were evaluated as potential attractants. The nettle volatile compounds （[Z]-3- hexenol and [E]-2-hexenal） were extracted using a Clevenger Apparatus and identified by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. In the wind-tunnel experiments, the main components of the aphid alarm pheromone as well as a component of the aphid sexual pheromone strongly attracted both sexes of the Asian lady beetle while （-）-β- caryophyllene only attracted few individuals and had no impact on the males. The nettle extract as well as the （Z）-3-hexenol oriented both males and females to the odor source. The （E）-2-hexenal.w.s shown to have no effect on females even if this green leaf volatile attracted males. Because Z,E-nepetalactone was identified as the most efficient attractant in the wind-tunnel experiments, this volatile was also tested in a potato field where H. axyridis has been showed to respond to this semiochemical. This study highlighted that Z,E-nepetalactone orientated the Asian lady beetle H. axyridis under natural condi- tions, indicating that this volatile compound could certainly help for an efficient biological control approach against this invasive specie.

Retention of <i>β</i>-Carotene in Cream-Fleshed Sweetpotato-Based Complementary Food Stored in Different Containers under Simulated Tropical Temperature and Humidity

The stability of β-carotene in cream-fleshed sweetpotato-based complementary food stored in three different containers under simulated tropical temperature of 32°C and 85% relative humidity in an environmental chamber for 24 weeks was investigated. The formulation stored in a metallised polyester film in a refrigerator (approximately 3.0°C and 95% relative humidity) retained about 81% of β-carotene at 24 weeks, with no significant change in the moisture content. The formulation stored in either a metallised polyester film or a translucent polypropylene container placed in the environmental chamber retained approximately half of the β-carotene at 24 weeks, with a slight increase in moisture content. However, the formulation held in a transparent l.w.density polyethylene bag had the l.w.st β-carotene retention (37%) and the highest moisture content at week 24. within the limits of this study, it has been demonstrated that β-carotene in cream-fleshed sweetpotato-based complementary food was well retained when moisture uptake was minimised.

Heterologous expression of lamA gene encoded endo-β-1,3- glucanase and CO2 fixation by bioengineered Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002

The gene for the catalytic domain of thermostable endo-β-1,3-glucanase （laminarinase） lamA was cloned from Thermotoga maritima MSB8 and heterologously expressed in a bioengineered Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002. The mutant strain was cultured in a photobioreactor to assess biomass yield, recombinant laminarinase activity, and CO2 uptake. The maximum enzyme activity was observed at a oH of 8.0 and a temoerature of 70℃. At a CO2 concentration of 5%, we obtained a maximum specific growth rate of 0.083 h^-1 a biomass productivity of 0.42 g· l^-1·d^-1 a blomass concentration of 3.697 g.l^-1 , and a specific enzyme activity of the mutant strain of 4.325 ***^- 1 dry mass. All parameters decreased as CO2 concentration increased from 5% to 10% and further to 15% CO2, except enzyme activity, which increased from 5% to 10% CO2. However, the mutant culture still 1 1 grew at 15% CO2 concentration, as reflected by the blomass productwlty （0.26 g.l .d ）, biomass concentration （2.416 g.l^- 1）, and specific enzyme activity （3.247 ***^-1 dry mass）.

Assessment of Environmental Sources, levels and Distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons within Nzoia Catchment Area in Kenya

Continuous concerns about Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) presence in the environment have raised concern because of their toxic effects to various organisms. Sugarcane farming and cane processing industries are major economic activities within River Nzoia catchment area in Kenya. For instance, the sugar industries produce wastes and by products which can cause PAHs emission and environmental contamination in addition to activities related to rapid urbanization that is being observed within the catchment. This study presents a report on sources and distribution of PAHs levels in sugarcane by products waste, sediments, water and soils within the River Nzoia catchment area. Soil and sediment samples were extracted by soxhlet extraction using dichloro-methane and with C-18 catridges. Analyte separation and identification was done by GC-MS. Fourteen PAHs were detected with concentration ranges of;0.6 μg/l - 80 μg/l for water, 0.01 μg/kg - 1200 μg/kg for soils and 0.13 μg/kg - 19.6 μg/kg for sediments. Bagasse waste had PAHs concentrations in the range of 0.4 - 14 μg/kg, and filter cake in the range of 1.7 - 30 μg/kg. Boiler waters reported the presence of 8 PAHs. The ratio of concentrations of PAHs in boiler water, filter cake and bagasse waste to the soils and water samples within the vicinity to the sugar processing companies did not indicate a point source of contamination;rather it pointed to diffuse sources. The same results were observed for water and sediment samples obtained in the vicinity of waste dumpsite. Variation of PAHs concentrations from sugar manufacturing processes corresponded to the kind and conditions of the processes. l.w.r molecular weight PAHs dominated in water sample. The presense of benz: 1) pyrene, benz 2) flourancene and Indeno(123,cd)pyrene in both water and sludge soils are of concern since this water is abstracted for domestic use, while sludge soil is used as fertilizer in agricultural farms. Background: Preoperative portal vein embolization (PVE) is currently the standard technique used routinely to increase the size of the future remnant liver (FRl) before major hepatectomies. The degree of hypertrophy (DH) is approximatively 10% and requires on average six weeks. AlPPS is faster and achieves a good DH but with a higher morbidity and mortality. One method recently proposed to increase the FRl is liver venous deprivation (lVD), but its clinical and operative impact is still unknown. The aim of this study is to compare intra- and postoperative morbidity/mortality and the histological evaluation of the liver parenchyma between PVE and lVD in patients undergoing anatomic right hepatectomy. Methods: Fifty-three consecutive patients undergoing PVE and lVD before a major hepatectomy were retrospectively analysed between 2015 and 2017. In order to reduce the bias, only potential standard right hepatectomies were selected. Surgical resections and the radiologic procedures were performed by the same Institution. Intra-operative parameters (transfusions, perfusions, bleeding, operative time), postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo and ISGlS criteria), and histological findings were compared. Results: To induce FRl growth 16 patients underwent PVE and 13 lVD. One patient of the PVE group was not resected due to peritoneal metastases. Surgery was performed for hepatocellular carcinoma (PVE =9, lVD=3), metastases (PVE =5, lVD =10), or others diseases (PVE =2, lVD =0). Per- and post-operative morbidity/mortality rates after PVE and lVD procedures were null. No differences between the two groups were found in terms of intraoperative bleeding (median: 550 vs. 1,200 ml;P=0.36), hepatic pedicle clamping (5 vs. 3 patients;P=0.69), intraoperative red blood cells transfusions (median: 622 vs. 594;P=0.42) and operative time (median:270 vs. 330 min;P=0.34). 媒介产品的跨文化传播是以本土的方式进行接受。本研究认为经济绩效中的文化折扣及跨文化预测性是媒介产品本土接受的两个数量反映。尽管普遍化是行之有效的解决策略,媒介产品在本土接受过程中价值的损失以及票房绩效的预测,还是成为生产者最为关心的问题。本文通过分析1989年到2004年在香港上映的好莱坞影片票房数据,检验了不同电影类型在香港的文化折扣及预测性的缺失。研究结果表明,喜剧的文化特定性最高,科幻片最为普遍,其他电影类型的结果较为混合。

Usefulness of the Surgical Apgar Score to Predict the Occurrence of Major Complications in the Early Post-Operative Period of Major Surgeries: Experience of Two Second-Category Hospitals in Cameroon

Objective: The Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) is a tool for intraoperative stratification of the risk of serious complications in the early postoperative period. It varies from 0 to 10 points divided into three risk categories (0 to 4 high, 5 to 7 moderate, 8 to 10 l.w.. The aim of the study was to evaluate its relevance in predicting the appearance of these complications. Material and methods: This descriptive and analytical study was carried out at the “laquintinie” Hospital in Douala and at the Central Hospital in Yaounde, Cameroon. The main data were collected on a population of patients over 18 years old and recorded on a survey form. They consisted of variables of main interest and exposure variables. Univariate and multivariate statistical analysis using top-down logistic regression models made it possible to evaluate the association of each variable of main interest and each exposure variable. The association was significant at P Results: Of the 88 patients studied, the SAS was 3 hours. In multivariate, this link persisted only and strongly for the SAS OR (IC) 0.1 (0.1 - 0.2) and p = 000. Conclusion: The study found a specific and powerful link between the SAS score lications in the early postoperative period, in favor of its relevance in predicting them.

Background: Hepatic tumors with complex vascular supply or poor relative perfusion are prone to decreased rates of objective response. This is compounded in the setting of Yttrium-90(Y90) transarterial radioembolization(TARE), which is minimally embolic and fl.w.dependent, relying on high threshold dose for complete ***: we describe our experience with intrahepatic fl.w.diversion(FD) prior to TARE of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) with challenging vascular *** and methods: Between April 2014 and January 2020, 886 cases of coinciding MAA or TARE and bland embolization or temporary occlusion were *** embolizations performed for more routine purposes were excluded. FD was performed by bland embolization or temporary occlusion of vessels supplying non-malignant parenchyma in cases where fl.w.was not preferential to target tumor. lesion characteristics, vascular supply, treatment approach, angiography, and adverse events(AEs) were reviewed. Radiographic response was assessed using mRECIST ***: 22 cases of FD of focal HCC were identified. Embolics included calibrated microspheres(n = 11), microcoils(n = 4), gelfoam(n = 3), temporary balloon occlusion(n = 2) and temporary deployment of a microvascular plug(n = 1). Post-treatment SPECT-CT dosimetry coverage was concordant with target lesions in all cases. Mean foll.w.up was 16.7 months(1.4–45 mos). Tumor-specific response per m RECIST was 41% complete response, 50% objective response, and 59% disease control rate. No major adverse events or grade 3/4 hepatotoxicity were ***: Our findings suggest that FD prior to TARE is safe and potentially effective in treating HCC with complex vascular supply or poor tumor perfusion.
