Growth and Biochmical Studies of Mrigal Fish (Cirrhinus mrigala) Fed Graded levels of Oil

A 45-day experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth performance, digestive enzymes activity and biochemical response of Cirrhinus mrigala fed graded levels of oil. Three isonitrogenous purified diets （6%, 8% and 10% of oil） were formulated. A total of 108 juveniles of Cirrhinus mrigala （5.95±0.25） g were equally distributed in triplicate groups in nine plastic tanks of 100 l capacity and fed under natural light cycle. Growth performance of the fish significantly reflected the effect of inclusion levels of oil tested but the diet with 8% lipid had the best significant growth performance [% weight gain, Feed Conversion Ratio （FCR） and Specific Growth Rate （SGR）], across different experimental groups. levels of secretion of digestive enzymes in the fish fed different experimental diets resulted in significant values of （p〈0.05） amylase and lipase, while Aspartate transaminase （AST）, Alanine transaminase （AlT）, lactate dehydrogenase （lDH） and Malate dehydrognnase （MDH） values in the muscle and liver decreased significantly （F〈0.05） as the levels of oii in the diet increased. However, serum biochemical parameters did not record any significant difference 6o〉0.05） with the exception of the total lipid across diets. The study confirmed the inclusion effect of graded levels ofoil in juvenile Mrigal diet, but the inclusion should not be more than 8% to avert growth depression.

Risk of clinically significant prostate adenocarcinoma （CAP） varies worl.w.de,although there is a uniform prevalence of latent disease. A hormone-responsive tissue,the prostate possesses the metabolizing capacity to biotransform a variety of environmental procarcinogens or endogenous hormones. whether such metabolizing capacity or estrogen receptor （ER） status underlies these demographic differences in susceptibility to CaP remains unclear. with appropriate ethical permission,verified-benign tissues were obtained foll.w.ng transurethral resection of the prostate from a high-risk region （n = 12 UK-resident Caucasians） and a typically l.w.risk region （n = 14 India-resident Asians）. Quantitative gene expression analysis was employed for cytochrome P450 （CYP）1B1,N-acetyltransferase （NAT）1,NAT2,catechol-O-methyl transferase （ COMT）,sulfotransferase （ SUlT） 1A1,ERα,ERβ and aromatase （CYP To quantify the presence or absence of CYP1B1,ERα or ERβ,and to identify ther in situ localization,immunohistochemistry was carried out. The two cohorts had reasonably well-matched serum levels of prostate-specific antigen or hormones. Expression levels for the candidate genes investigated were ***,clear differences in protein levels for CYP1B1 and ERβ were noted. Staining for CYP1B1 tended to be nuclear-associated in the basal glandular epithelial cells,and in UK-resident Caucasian tissues was present at a higher （P = 0.006） level compared with that from India-resident Asians. In contrast,a higher level of positive ERβ staining was noted in prostates from India-resident Asians. These study findings point to differences in metabolizing capacity and ER status in benign prostate tissues that might modulate susceptibility to the emergence of clinically significant CaP in demographically distinct populations.

Background： The development of forestry as a scientific and management discipline over the last two centuries has mainly emphasized intensive management operations focused on increased commodity production, mostly wood. This conventionar＇ forest management approach has typically favored production of even-aged, single-species stands. while alternative management regimes have generally received less attention, this has been changing over the last three decades, especially in countries with developed economies. Reasons for this change include a combination of new information and concerns about the ecological consequences of intensive forestry practices and a willingness on the part of many forest owners and society to embrace a wider set of management objectives. Alternative silvicultural approaches are characterized by a set of fundamental principles, including avoidance of clearcutting, an emphasis on structural diversity and small-scale variability, deployment of mixed species with natural regeneration, and avoidance of intensive site-preparation methods. Methods： Our compilation of the authors＇ experiences and perspectives from various parts of the world aims to initiate a larger discussion concerning the constraints to and the potential of adopting alternative silvicultural practices. Results： The results suggest that a wider adoption of alternative silvicultural practices is currently hindered by a suite of ecological, economic, logistical, informational, cultural, and historical constraints. Individual contexts display their own unique combinations and relative significance of these constraints, and accordingly, targeted efforts, such as regulations and incentives, may help to overcome specific challenges. Conclusions： In a broader context, we propose that less emphases on strict applications of principles and on stand structures might provide additional flexibility and facilitate the adoption of alternative silvicultural regimes in a broader set of circumstanc

Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Activities of Binuclear Metal Complexes of 2-Benzoylpyridine and Phenyl(Pyridin-2-yl) Methanediol Derived from 1-Phenyl-1-(Pyridin-2-yl)-N-(Pyrimidin-2-yl) Methanimine Dihydrate Schiff Base

The Schiff base, 1-phenyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(pyrimidin-2-yl)methanimine dihydrate (l1) has been synthesized by the condensation reaction between 2-aminopyrimidine and 2-benzoylpyridine and characterized using 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, microanalysis, FT-IR, DEPT-135, HSQC, HMBC, COZY, NOESY. The reaction of 1-phenyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(pyrimidin-2-yl)methanimine dihydrate (l1) with salts of V(IV), Co(II) and Cu(II), however, resulted in the hydrolysis of l1 to give binuclear metal complexes of 2-benzoylpyridine (l2) and phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanediol (l3) which were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, and TGA. The single crystal x-ray structure determined for the Copper(II) complex revealed that we obtained a compound previously obtained using a different method of synthesis. The Schiff base ligand (l1) is soluble in methanol, ethanol, DMSO, acetone and DMF. Microanalysis and Spectroscopic studies indicated that binuclear metal complexes were obtained by the coordination of metal ion to 2-benzoylpyridine (l2) and phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanediol (l3) from the hydrolysis of l1. Spectroscopic and elemental analysis reveal the formation of square pyramidal complexes of Co(II) and Cu(II) and a square planar complex of V(IV). In vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity against three bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus) and three fungal stains (Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Candida parapsilosis) showed moderate biological activity. Antioxidant studies reveal that only the binuclear Co(II) and oxovanadium(II) complexes are potent to eliminate free radicals.

Detection Methods for MEMS-Based Xylophone Bar Magnetometer for Pico Satellites

Initially studied and developed by students in universities, the very small pico satellites （with a mass l.w.r than 1 kg） are more and more considered for science applications. In particular, there are plans to use them in constellations of small spacecraft for remote sensing of various regions of the magnetosphere. They require a payload with specific size, weight and power consumption. In order to respond to this demand, new instruments have to be developed. Those instruments should exhibit at least the same performances as those used in larger satellites while fulfilling the specific requirements imposed by the satellites size. For this reason, the authors currently develop a xylophone bar magnetometer （XBM） based on micro-electromechanical systems （MEMS） with integrated detector electronics. The principle of this magnetometer is based on a classical resonating xylophone bar. A sinnsoidal current oscillating at the fundamental bending resonant frequency of the bar is applied through the device, and when an external magnetic field is present, the resulting lorentz force yields the bar to vibrate at its fundamental mode with a displacement directly proportional to the amplitude in one direction of the ambient magnetic field. when designing a MEMS XBM, the detection method is a crucial aspect. The measurement method largely influences the geometry of the magnetometer as well as the manufacturing technology. Due to the constraints in terms of size, weight and power consumption, the two most promising measurement methods are capacitive and piezoelectric ones. Several designs including these measurement techniques are presented and simulated under realistic conditions. First, designs including lateral electrodes for capacitive measurement are tackled based on Silicon-On-Insulator （SOI） process. The microvascular supply of the biliary tree, the peribiliary plexus （PBP）, stems from the hepatic artery branches and fl.w. into the hepatic sinusoids. A detailed three-dimensional study of the PBP has been performed by using the Scanning Electron Microscopy vascular corrosion casts （SEMvcc） technique. Considering that the PBP plays a fundamental role in supporting the secretory and absorptive functions of the biliary epithelium, their organization in either normalcy and pathology is explored. The normal liver shows the PBP arranged around extra-and intrahepatic biliary tree. In the small portal tract PBP was characterized by a single layer of capillaries which progressively continued with the extrahepatic PBP where it showed a morecomplex vascular network. After common duct ligation （BDl）, progressive modifications of bile duct and PBP proliferation are observed. The PBP presents a three-dimensional network arranged around many bile ducts and appears as bundles of vessels, composed by capillaries of homogeneous diameter with a typical round mesh structure. The PBP network is easily distinguishable from the sinusoidal network which appears normal. Considering the enormous extension of the PBP during BDl, the possible role played by the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor （VEGF） is evaluated. VEGF-A,VEGF-C and their related receptors appeared highly immunopositive in proliferating cholangiocytes of BDl rats. The administration of anti-VEGF-A or anti-VEGF-C antibodies to BDl rats as well as hepatic artery ligation induced a reduced bile duct mass. The administration of rVEGF-A to BDl hepatic artery ligated rats prevented the decrease of cholangiocyte proliferation and VEGF-A expression as compared to BDl control rats. These data suggest the role of arterial blood supply of the biliary tree in conditions of cholangiocyte proliferation, such as it occurs during chronic cholestasis. Development of weed Management Strategies for Cashew Cultivation in Ghana

Three field trials, one for establishment and two for mature phases respectively, were conducted to develop weed management strategies for cashew cultivation in Ghana. The treatments for the establishment phase consisted of hoe weeding of whole plot, hoe weeding of cashew lines and slashing of inter-rows, herbicide application with glyphosate of whole plot or cashew lines with slashing of inter-rows, relay cropping of the cashew plot with sorghum and a legume and intercropping with a legume. In one trial of the mature phase, the treatments were hoe weeding of whole plot two or three times a year, high slashing of whole plot three times a year, herbicide application （glyphosate） of whole plot and ring application of herbicide （glyphosate） plus high slashing of inter-rows twice a year. In the other trial, which was carried out on farmers＇ fields, glyphosate （Roundup） at 2.0 l/ha was tested against manual slashing. In the study of the establishment phase, neither the girth nor height of the cashew seedlings was significantly affected by the treatments. The first year and four year cumulative cashew yields were significantly affected by treatments with the intercrops giving higher yields than the glyphosate-treated plots. Intercropping as a weed control measure was generally more costly than glyphosate application or manual.w.eding. In the mature trials, chemical.w.ed control slightly improved cashew nut yield and was cheaper to apply. It is recommended to adopt chemical.w.ed control in cashew cultivation in Ghana.
