Glycated hemoglobin and antidiabetic strategies as risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To evaluate the relationship between glycemic control [assessed by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)], antidiabetic therapies and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: We recruited 465 patients with HCC, 618 cases with liver cirrhosis and 490 controls with no liver disease. Among subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), the associations between the antidiabetic strategies and HbA1c level with HCC were determined through 2 series of multivariate logistic regression models using cirrhotic patients and controls as comparison groups. RESULTS: DM2 prevalence was 31.2% in patients with HCC, 23.2% in cirrhotic patients and 12.6% in controls (P < 0.0001). In 86% of study subjects, DM2 had been diagnosed for more than 1 year before the HCC diagnosis. HCC patients with DM2 had a 1.52.5fold increased risk of liver cancer. The HbA1c mean levels were signif icantly higher in DM2 patients with HCC than in cirrhoticand control DM2 patients. Antidiabetic treatment with metformin was more common among cirrhotic and control DM2 subjects than among cases with HCC. In both series of multivariate analyses, treatment with metformin signif icantly reduced the risk of HCC by more than 80% compared with sulphonylureas and insulin therapy. No signif icant differences were seen between sulphonylureas and insulin treatment. Elevated HbA1c levels were positively related to the risk for HCC in diabetic patients, with a 26%50% increase in risk for each 1% increase in HbA1c ***: In patients with preexisting DM2, the risk of HCC is positively associated with poor chronic glycemic control and significantly decreased by metformin therapy.

Light and heavy clusters in warm stellar matter

Light and heavy clusters are calculated for warm stellar matter in the framework of relativistic mean-field models, in the single-nucleus approximation. The cluster abundances are determined from the minimization of the free energy. In-medium effects of light cluster properties are included by introducing an explicit binding energy shift analytically calculated in the Thomas–Fermi approximation, and the coupling constants are fixed by imposing that the virial limit at low density is recovered. The resulting light cluster abundances come out to be in reasonable agreement with constraints at higher density coming from heavy-ion collision data. Some comparisons with microscopic calculations are also shown.

During the past three decades, the Wingless-type MMTV integration site （Wnt） signaling cascade has emerged as an essential system regulating multiple processes in developing and adult brain. Accumulating evidence points to a dysregulation of Wnt signaling in major neurodegenerative pathologies including Parkinson＇s disease （PD）, a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the pro- gressive loss of midbrain dopaminergic （mDA） neurons and deregulated activation of astrocytes and microglia. This review highlights the emerging link between Wnt signaling and key inflammatory pathways during mDA neuron damage/repair in PD progression. In particular, we summarize recent evidence documenting that aging and neurotoxicant exposure strongly antagonize Wnt/β-catenin signaling in mDA neurons and subventricular zone （SVZ） neuroprogenitors via astrocyte-microglial interactions. Dysregulation of the crosstalk between Wnt/β-catenin signaling and anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory pathways delineate novel mechanisms driving the decline of SVZ plasticity with age and the limited nigrostriatal dopaminergic self-repair in PD. These findings hold a promise in devetoping therapies that target Wnt/β-catenin signaling to enhance endogenous restoration and neuronal outcome in age-dependent diseases, such as PD.

Closed-loop hydrometallurgical treatment of end-of-life lithium ion batteries: Towards zero-waste process and metal recycling in advanced batteries

This work presents an enhanced hydrometallurgical process for recycling lithium ion batteries. First, endof-life batteries were processed in a physical pre-treatment plant to obtain a representative electrode material. The resulting leachate was purified forth by iron-precipitation, liquid–liquid extractions, and an innovative Li–Na separation, in order to obtain valuable products. These products include high-grade graphite, cobalt oxide(Co3O4, purity 83%), cobalt oxalate(CoC2O4, purity 96%), nickel oxide(Ni O, purity89%), and lithium carbonate(Li2CO3, purity 99.8%). The recovery rate was quantitative for graphite, between 80% and 85% for cobalt depending on the nature of the recovery method, 90% for nickel, and 72%for lithium. Secondary streams were also valorized to obtain sodium sulfate(Na2SO4, purity 96%), and MnCoFe2O4 magnetic nano-sorbents according to the zero-waste concept. In order to close the loop, recycled Co3O4 and NiO were used as conversion-type anode materials for advanced lithium ion batteries showing promising performances.

In this paper we extend the reduced-form setting under model uncertainty introduced in[5]to include intensities following an affine process under parameter uncertainty,as defined in[15].This framework allows us to introduce a longevity bond under model uncertainty in a way consistent with the classical case under one prior and to compute its valuation ***,we price a contingent claim with the sublinear conditional operator such that the extended market is still arbitrage-free in the sense of“no arbitrage of the first kind”as in[6].

Ampullary neoplasms,although rare,present distinctive clinical and pathological features from other neoplastic lesions of the periampullary *** specific guidelines about their management are available,and they are often assimilated either to biliary tract or to pancreatic *** to their location,they tend to become symptomatic at an earlier stage compared to pancreatic *** behaviour results in a higher resectability rate at *** a pathological point of view they arise in a zone of transition between two different epithelia,and,according to their origin,may be divided into pancreatobiliary or intestinal *** classification has a substantial impact on *** most cases,pancreaticoduodenectomy represents the treatment of choice when there is an overt or highly suspicious malignant *** rate of potentially curative resection is as high as 90% and in high-volume centres an acceptable rate of complications is *** selected situations less invasive approaches,such as ampullectomy,have been advocated,although there are some concerns mainly because of a higher recurrence rate associated with limited resections for invasive ***,these methods have the drawback of not including an appropriate lymphadenectomy,while nodal involvement has been shown to be frequently present also in apparently lowrisk *** ampullectomy is now the procedure of choice in case of low up to high-grade dysplasia providing a proper assessment of the T status by endoscopic *** the present paper the evidence currently available is reviewed,with the aim of offering an updated framework for diagnosis and management of this specific type of disease.

Understanding of animal spatial behavior is essential for informed management *** southern Africa,reintroduction of lions(Panthera leo)to small reserves(60 separate visits)around the largest dam and along rivers suggest the importance of water and its surrounding vegetation in the lions’space utilization *** home range size did not differ with season or sex of the individuals,whereas shifts in locations of home ranges revealed differences in the response of the 2 sexes to territorial conflicts and management *** study shows a dynamic home range utilization pattern and highlights the importance of both fine-scale space use patterns(frequency and duration of visits)and broadscale home range changes in understanding the ranging behavior of reintroduced animals.
