A foreign body in the urethra is the presence of an object in the urethra. They are often secondary, either to an erotic curiosity, û or to psychiatric disorders. The diagnosis remains clinically aided by imagery. Treatment is most often endoscopic, but in some cases the use of open surgery is necessary. We reported the case of an 80-year-old man with no history of behavioral disorders;a wooden rod was inserted into the urethra to empty his bladder. The care consisted of a meatoplasty under locoregional anesthesia. Upon discharge, the patient had a good urine flow.

Intestinal Resection: Indications and Prognostic Factors at the General Surgery Department of Kankan Regional Hospital

Introduction: Intestinal resection is the disconnection or removal of part of the intestine with its meso. The aim was to describe the indications and prognostic factors for intestinal resections at the surgical department of Kankan Regional Hospital. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study covering the files of patients who had undergone intestinal resections in the surgery department of the Kankan regional hospital over a period of 4 years from 1st January 2019 to December 31, 2022. Results: We collected 164 cases of intestinal resection representing 4.19% of all surgical procedures. (N = 3909). The average age of our patients was 37.78 years with extremes of 1 and 90 years. The male gender was predominant (64.6%) and the sex ratio was 1.8. The majority of patients consulted after 72 hours. Acute intestinal obstruction was the pathology motivating the most intestinal resection 42.90% followed by acute peritonitis 33%, digestive fistula 4.3%, tumors 3.6% and wounds 2.4%. Intestinal necrosis with 91 cases (56.5%) constituted the first indication for resection in our study followed by intestinal perforations 41 cases (24.9%). We performed an anastomotic resection of the small intestine in 70 cases (42.9%), an ileostomy in 4 cases (2.4%), a right hemi colectomy in 26 cases (15.9%), a left hemi colectomy in 2 cases (1.2%), segmental colectomy plus immediate anastomosis in 57 cases (34.2%) and 5 cases of colostomy. We recorded 48 deaths (29.3%). Conclusion: Intestinal resection is a common procedure in our context. These indications are multiple. An improvement in the prognosis should be achieved by reducing the diagnostic and treatment time associated with the training of surgical staff.

In Burkina Faso, agricultural land degradation, including soil fertility decline, has prompted the implementation of agricultural innovations to address this challenge. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the contribution of four Papilionaceous ecotypes in enhancing the fertility of degraded soils. Experiments were conducted in Noumousso and Arbollé from July to December 2024, using a randomized split-plot design combining ecotypes and organic matter and/or Burkina Phosphate amendments. Amendments were applied in four treatments: T0 (control), T1 (Organic Matter), T2 (OM + Burkina Phosphate), and T3 (BP). Determined physico-chemical properties were: particle size distribution, pH, carbon (C), nitrogen (Nt), total Phosphorus (Pt), available P (P_Bray), potassium (Kt), exchangeable bases (EB), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and saturation rate (SR). The evaluated agronomic parameter was total biomass. Results revealed that the soils at both sites were characterized by acidic sandy-clay texture and low levels of C, N, P, K, EB, and CEC. Cultivating papilionaceous and applying organo-mineral amendments contributed to increased levels of C, available P, and Mg2+, as well as improved SR. Acidity decreased at Arbollé, while showing a slight increase at Noumousso. Interaction between the two factors helped reduce acidity at both sites and significantly increased C, N, and available P contents. The organo-mineral amendment also enhanced biomass production across all ecotypes. At Noumousso, compared to T0, OM, OM + BP, and BP treatments resulted in biomass increases of 64.8%, 73.1%, and 38.6%, respectively. At Arbollé, the corresponding increases were 33.5%, 47%, and 23.4%. On both sites, OM + BP amendment had the greatest impact on improving biomass production, followed by organic amendment. In this work, mineral oil and synthetic esters were selected at different ageing factors (based on acidity values). Fresh and aged oils have been subjected to high-energy discharges (repeated 100 breakdowns) to simulate electric faults of highly vulnerable intensity. The intent of this work is to understand the influence of high-energy electric faults on oil degradation and gassing tendency at different ageing conditions. In this study, the influence of the high-energy discharges on degradation and gassing tendency at different ageing factors is reported for mineral oil and synthetic esters. Oil degradation is reported by adopting ultraviolet spectroscopy, turbidity and particle counter as per american society for testing and materials (ASTM) standard test methods. Gassing tendencies and fault gas analysis are understood by dissolved the gas analysis using Duval's triangle and Duval's pentagon methods for mineral and non-mineral oils. It is found that the influence of high-energy discharges on oil degradation is higher in mineral oils to that of the synthetic esters. The intensity of the gassing tendency is higher for ester fluids;however, as per the Duval methods, the faulty conditions are at lower levels as compared to mineral oils.

Introgression of Two Drought QTLs into FUNAABOR-2 Early Generation Backcross Progenies Under Drought Stress at Reproductive Stage

FUNAABOR-2 is a popular Ofada rice variety grown in a large area under rainfed upland condition across western states of Nigeria. We used the combination of phenotypic and marker-assisted selection(MAS) to improve grain yield of FUNAABOR-2 under drought stress(DS) at the reproductive stage via introgression of two drought quantitative trait loci(QTLs), qDTY12.1 and qDTY2.3. Foreground selection was carried out using peak markers RM511 and RM250, associated with qDTY12.1 and qDTY2.3, respectively, followed by recombinant selection with RM28099 and RM1261 distally flanking qDTY12.1. Furthermore, BC1 F2-derived introgressed lines and their parents were evaluated under DS and non-stress(NS) conditions during the 2015–2016 dry season. Overall reduction of grain yield under DS compared to NS was recorded. Introgressed lines with qDTY12.1 and qDTY2.3 combinations showed higher yield potential compared to lines with single or no QTL under DS, indicating significant positive interactions between the two QTLs under the FUNAABOR-2 genetic background. Pyramiding of qDTY12.1 and qDTY2.3 in the FUNAABOR-2 genetic background led to higher grain yield production under DS and NS.
