Growth characteristics and reproductive output of dwarf m.stletoeinfected Juniperus polycarpos in Iran

Dwarf m.stletoes are parasitic flowering plants that infect conifers, resulting in substantial loss of growth and m.rtality. Recently, forest m.nagers in Iran are contem.lating whether infection of Juniperus polycarpos C. Koch forests by dwarf m.stletoe, Arceuthobium.oxycedri （DC.） m. Bieb, influences tree vigor and contributes to insuffieient natural regeneration. The present study aim.d at assessing the severity of infection and its im.act on growth and reproductive output of./., polycar- pos. Infected and uninfected trees （n =20 each） were selected for assess- m.nt of diam.ter, height, crown area, and crown volum. as well as quantity and quality of cones and seeds. The severity of infection of trees was determ.ned by Hawksworth＇s 6-class dwarf m.stletoe rating （Dm.） system. The Dm. system.revealed that 40% of the infected sam.le trees were lightly infected （Dm. =1-2） and 60% were m.derately infected （Dm. =3--4）. Growth characteristics did not differ significantly （p 〉 0.05） between infected and uninfected trees. However, m.derate infec- tion affected the reproductive output of./. polycarpos by significantly （p 〈0.05） reducing the m.an num.er of cones per unit area of the crown, increasing the num.er of dam.ged seeds, and reducing seed size and seedgerm.nation capacity. we conclude that reproductive output of J.. poly- carpos is m.re sensitive than growth characters to m.derate infection by juniper dwarf m.stletoe, and this m.ght partly account for poor natural regeneration.

Soil seed bank assem.ly following secondary succession on abandoned agricultural fields in Nicaragua

The com.osition and density of seeds in soils of secondary forests derived on abandoned fields after 4, 9 and 14 years of aban- donm.nt were quantified to exam.ne whether the soil seed bank assem.les during secondary succession as the plant com.unities assem.le. A total of 18, 37 and 48 soil sam.les from.4-, 9- and 14-year old sites, respectively were collected in 15 cm.× 15 cm.plots up to 9 cm.depth. A total of 3, 5 and 9 species were found on sites abandoned 4, 9 and 14 years ago, respectively, Am.ng different life form., trees were highly represented in the soil seed bank of 9-year （60%） and 14-year （33%） old sites com.ared to 4-year old site entirely dom.nated by non- w.ody flora. The total num.er of seeds ranged from.327 in the 4-year old site to 146 in the 14-year old site, and the corresponding density of viable seeds ranged from.141 seeds m.-2 in the 4- year old site to 26 seeds m.-2 in the 14-year old site with a consistent decreasing pattern in the chronosequence. The sim.larity between the soil seed flora and the standing w.ody vegetation was low for both 9- and 14-year old sites while com.lete dissim.larity was found for 4-year old site. we concluded that the species com.osition of soil seed banks assem.le gradually during secondary succession, but the overall seed density is still low for natural regeneration of trees to rely on. To expedite the recovery of secondary forests on such abandoned fields, the seed bank needs to be supplem.nted by direct seeding, enrichm.nt planting of desired species and installing artificial perches for facilitating seed dispersal.

A chronosequence analysis of forest recovery on abandoned agricultural fields in Nicaragua

Species com.osition, diversity and population structure of w.ody species recovered on three abandoned agricultural fields after 4, 9 and 14 years were characterized. Seedlings, saplings/poles and m.ture trees were identified and counted in 70 plots of 100 m. in each abandoned site. A total of 13, 29 and 22 fam.lies represented by 17, 48 and 44 species were registered in 4-, 9-and 14-year-old stands, respectively. There was a shift in dom.nant species across successional stages. Lonchocarpus acum.natus had the highest im.ortance value in the 4-year old stand, whereas, m.rosperm.n frutescens, Guazum. ulm.folia and Cordia alliodora had the highest im.ortance value in the 9-year-old-stand and Caesaeria corym.osa, m.ntingia calabura, Gliricidia sepium.and Tabebuia rosea in the 14-year-old stand. The total stem.density increased from.5011 to 9631 individuals per hectare as the age of abandonm.nt increased from.4 to 14 years. The total basal area of individuals ≥ 1cm.d.b.h. also increased with the age of abandonm.nt. Overall, sm.ll individuals (m.dbh) contributed to m.re than half of the total basal area. Species diversity was the highest in the 9-year old stand followed by 14-and 4-year-old stands. we concluded that floristic com.osition of secondary forests recovers rapidly to the m.ture forest level com.ared to structural attributes, which is consistent with the general successional trajectories of tropical dry forest.

Lim. is the capital of the Republic of Peru. It is the m.st im.ortant city in the country and as other Latin Am.rica m.tropolises have m.ltiple problem., including air pollution due to particulate m.terial above air quality standards, em.tted by 1.6 m.llion vehicles. The “on-line” coupled m.del of m.teorology and chem.stry of transport and m.teorological/chem.stry, wRF/Chem.(weather and Research Forecasting with Chem.stry) has been used in the Lim. m.tropolitan Area, and validated against data observed at ground level with ten air quality stations of the National Service of m.teorology and Hydrology for the year 2016. The goal of this study was to estim.te the concentration of Pm..5 particulate m.tter in the m.nths of February and July of 2016. In both m.nths, the m.del satisfactorily predicts tem.erature and relative hum.dity. The average observed Pm..5 concentrations in the m.nth of July are higher than in February, probably because the relative hum.dity in July is greater than the relative hum.dity in February. In the m.nths of February and July the standard observed deviations of the m.del have a factor of 2.4 and 3.7 respectively, indicating a greater dispersion in the data of the m.del. In the m.nth of July, the m.del captures the characteristics of transport, shows characteristic peaks during peak hours, therefore, the m.del estim.tes transport behavior better in July than in February. The quality of the air is strongly influenced by the vehicular transport. The Pm..5 particulate m.terial in February had an average bias that varied from.[?13.2 to 4.4 μg/m.] and in July [?9.63 to 11.65 μg/m.] and a norm.lized average bias in February that varied from.[?0.68 to 0.43] and in July of [?0.46 to 0.48].
