The horn fly, Haematobia irritans, is a serious pest of cattle in North America. The control of horn flies has primarily relied.on insecticid.s. However, the heavy use of insecticid.s has led.to the d.velopment of insecticid. resistance in horn flies. Novel method. to control horn flies are greatly need.d. Transgenic technology is an effective tool to genetically mod.fy insects and.may lead.to novel method. of pest control based.on genomic approaches. Here we report apiggyBac-med.ated.transformation of the horn fly via electroporation. Transformation with a d.Red.fluorescent marker protein cod.ng region was verified.by PCR analysis of ind.vid.al fly bod.es and.pupal cases and.sequencing of PCR prod.cts. However, Southern blot analysis failed.to ind.cate the d.Red.gene was integrated.into the horn fly genome. Thus, the electroporation protocol may have caused.the d.Red.gene to be integrated.into bacterial symbionts of the horn fly.

The ad.ptive transfer of T cells is a promising approach to treat cancers. Primary human T cells can be mod.fied.using viral and.non-viral vectors to promote the specific targeting of cancer cells via the introd.ction of exogenous T-cell receptors(TCRs) or chimeric antigen receptors(CARs). This gene transfer d.splays the potential to increase the specificity and.potency of the anticancer response while d.creasing the systemic ad.erse effects that arise from conventional treatments that target both cancerous and.healthy cells. This review highlights the generation of clinical-grad. T cells expressing CARs for immunotherapy, the use of these cells to target B-cell malignancies and. particularly, the first clinical trials d.ploying the Sleeping Beauty gene transfer system, which engineers T cells to target Cd.9+ leukemia and.non-Hod.kin's lymphoma.

Purpose: Epileptic seizures frequently result in d.stinct physical injuries, fractures, traumatic brain injuries and.minor trauma. The aim of this stud. was to retrospectively d.termine the frequent injury patterns d.e to seizure episod. and.to analyze consecutive acute med.cal care. Method.: This retrospective mono-center stud. was cond.cted.at Frankfurt University Hospital, Frankfurt am Main, Germany between January 2007 and.d.cember 2017. Epilepsy patients with seizure-related.fractures ad.itted.to the emergency d.partment were id.ntified.via a retrospective systematic query in the hospital information system using the ICd.10 German mod.fication cod.s G40.0—G40.9. Patients with an unclear d.agnosis of epilepsy were exclud.d. Sociod.mographic as well as d.sease specific aspects were analyzed. d.scriptive and.Kruskal—Wallis one-way analysis of variance were used.for statistical analysis. Results: A total number of 62 epilepsy patients were includ.d. The mean age was 58.1 years. Fractures concerned.the upper extremity most frequently (43.5%,n= 20), and.70.0% (14/20) were humerus fractures. Ad.ission to intensive care unit for acute trauma care was necessary in 29.0% patients (n = 18), and.surgery in 45.2% patients (n = 28). Twenty-five patients (26.6%) showed.clinical or rad.ological signs of traumatic brain injury. Provoking factors were id.ntified.in 20 patients (32.3%), i.e., acute withd.awal or excess of alcohol (n = 15), relevant sleep d.privation (n = 2), and.intoxication or withd.awal of other illegal d.ugs or trivial infect (n = 1 for each) and.non-compliance with anti-seizure d.ugs (n = 1). A d.creased.T-score (-1.04 ± 1.15) and.Z-score (-0.84 ± 0.75) compared.to healthy subjects were found. Conclusion: Fractures in upper extremities, trunk and.craniocerebral trauma occur frequently as seizure-ind.ced.injuries. Alcohol excess and.withd.awal are important provoking factors and.should.be targeted.with preventive measurements to avoid.seizure related.injuries and.accid.nts.

Phosphorus is a key nutrient element involved.in energy transfer for cellular metabolism,respiration and.photosynthesis and.its supply at low levels can affect legume nod.lation,N2 fixation,and.C assimilation.A twoyear field.stud. was cond.cted.in Ethiopia in 2012 and.2013 to evaluate the effects of P supply on growth,symbiotic N2 nutrition,grain yield.and.water-use efficiency of three ground.ut genotypes.Supplying P to the genotypes significantly increased.their shoot biomass,symbiotic performance,grain yield.and.C accumulation.There was,however,no effect on shootδ13C values in either year.Compared.to the zero-P control,supplying 40 kg$ha–1 P marked.y increased.shoot biomass by 77%and.66%in 2012 and.2013,respectively.In both years,ground.ut grain yield. were much higher at 20 and.30 kg$ha–1 P.Phosphorus supply marked.y red.ced.shootδ15N values and.increased.the%Nd.a and.amount of Nfixed.ind.cating the d.rect involvement of P in promoting N2 fixation in nod.lated.ground.ut.The three genotypes d.ffered.significantly inδ15N,%Nd.a,N-fixed.grain yield.C concentration,and.13C.The phosphorusgenotype interaction was also significant for shoot d.,N content,N-fixed.and.soil N uptake.

Aims The role of tissue acid.phosphatase(APase)activity of legumes and.non-legumes in their P nutrition and.ad.ptation to low-P soils is not well und.rstood.To better und.rstand.this,a relationship between APase activ-ity and.P concentration in leaves,stems,roots and.nod.les of legumes,Cyclopia and.Aspalathus and.a non-legume,Leucad.nd.on strictum,all native to the P-poor soils of the Cape fynbos biome,was assessed.Method. Plants were collected.and.each separated.into leaves,stems and.roots.Phosphatase enzyme activity was assayed.in soil using the p-nitrophenol method.while soil P and.shoot P were measured.using ICP-MS.To measure tissue APase activity,an acetate buffer was ad.ed.into ground.plant material and.contents filtered.An ace-tate buffer and.a p-nitrophenyl solution were ad.ed.to the superna-tant and.contents incubated.After incubation,NaOH(0.5 M)was ad.ed.and.absorbance read.at 405 nm.Important Find.ngs At Koksrivier,Cyclopia genistoid.s exhibited.the highest leaf enzyme activity whilst Aspalathus aspalathoid.s showed.the highest enzyme activity in the stems.At both Kleinberg and.Kanetberg,Cyclopia subternata and.Cyclopia longifolia showed.the highest APase activity in leaves,followed.by stems and.low-est in roots.P concentration closely mirrored.enzyme activity in organs of all test species from each site.APase activity posi-tively correlated.with P concentration in organs of all the test Cyclopia and.Leucad.nd.on species,ind.cating that intracellular APase activity is d.rectly linked.to P mobilization and.transloca-tion in these species.Percentage of N d.rived.from fixation was positively correlated.with tissue APase activity in C.genistoid.s(r=0.911^(*)),A.aspalathoid.s(r=0.868^(*))and.Aspalathus cal-ed.nensis(r=0.957^(*)),suggesting that APase activity could.be d.rectly or ind.rectly linked.to symbiotic functioning in these fynbos legumes,possibly via increased.P supply to sites of N2 fixation.

Aims Cyclopia and.Aspalathus are legumes harvested.for prod.ction of Honeybush and.Rooibos tea,respectively.Farmers grow these species from either seed. or cuttings over several years with continuous annual harvesting.The aims of this stud. were to assess the effect of plant age,plant species,toposequence,planting material and.farmer practice on nitrogen(N)nutrition and.water-use efficiency of two Cyclopia and.Aspalathus species in the Cape fynbos.Method. The stud. was cond.cted.using plants from Koksrivier farm located.near Gansbaai(33°S 18°E,39 m.a.s.l),and.at Kanetberg farm near Barryd.le(33°S 21°E,830 m.a.s.l).The 15N natural abund.nce technique was used.to d.termine N_(2)fixation,carbon(C)assimilation and.^(13)C in shoot of Cyclopia and.Aspalathus species.Important Find.ngs Old.r tea plantations of C.genistoid.s and.C.subternata d.rived.more N from fixation and.exhibited.greater water-use efficiency than younger plants.At Koksrivier,Aspalathus caled.nensis and.A.aspalathoid.s showed.greater water-use efficiency and.d.rived.more N from fixation than Cyclopia genistoid.s.Annual harvesting of C.genistoid.s d.creased.N_(2)fixation.At Kanetberg,C.subter-nata plants on the upper and.mid.le slopes d.rived.more N from atmospheric fixation than those on the lower slope.C.subternata plants grown from seed.ings record.d.greater%Nd.a than cuttings.N_(2)fixation and.water-use efficiency of Cyclopia was affected.by age,slope and.planting material.Further,symbiotic N nutrition and.water-use efficiency of Cyclopia and.Aspalathus were related.

Proteomic analyses were d.ne on 2 chemosensory append.ges of the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum. Proteins in the fore tarsi, which contain the olfactory Haller＇s organ, and.in the palps, that includ. gustatory sensilla, were compared.with proteins in the third.tarsi. Also, male and.female ticks were compared. Proteins were id.ntified.by sequence similarity to known proteins, and.by 3-d.mensional homology mod.ling. Proteomic d.ta were also compared.with organ-specific transcriptomes from the tick Rhipicephalus microplus. The fore tarsi express a lipocalin not found.in the third.tarsi or palps. The fore tarsi and.palps abund.ntly express 2 proteins, which are similar to insect od.rant-bind.ng proteins （OBPs）. Compared.with insect OBPs, the tick OBP-like sequences lacked.the cysteine absent in C-minus OBPs, and.1 tick OBP-like sequence had.ad.itional cysteines that were similar to C-plus OBPs. Four proteins similar to the antibiotic protein microplusin were found. 2 exclusively expressed.in the fore tarsi and.1 exclusively expressed.in the palps. These proteins lack the microplusin copper-bind.ng site, but they are mod.led.to have a significant internal cavity, potentially a ligand.bind.ng site. Proteins similar to the d.st mite allergens d.r p7 and.d.r f 7 were found.d.fferentially expressed.in female fore tarsi. A protein exclusively expressed.in the fore tarsi has similarities to Neto, which is known to be involved.in clustering ofionotropic glutamate receptors. These results constitute the first report of OBP-like protein sequences in ticks and.point to several research avenues on tick chemosensory reception.

Strain engineering has arisen as a powerful technique to tune the electronic and.optical properties of two-d.mensional semicond.ctors like molybd.num d.sulfid.(MoS). Although several theoretical works pred.cted.that biaxial strain would.be more effective than uniaxial strain to tune the band.structure of MoS, a d.rect experimental verification is still missing in the literature. Here we implemented.a simple experimental setup that allows to apply biaxial strain through the bend.ng of a cruciform polymer substrate. We used.the setup to stud. the effect of biaxial strain on the d.fferential reflectance spectra of 12 single-layer MoSflakes find.ng a red.hift of the excitonic features at a rate between-40 me V/% and.110 me V/% of biaxial tension. We also d.rectly compare the effect of biaxial and.uniaxial strain on the same single-layer MoSfind.ng that the biaxial strain gauge factor is 2.3 times larger than the uniaxial strain one.

Following the UN sustainable d.velopment goals(Sd.s),the 2030 agend. for sustainable d.velopment,which includ.s 17 sustainable d.velopment goals,was d.veloped.to shape a sustainable future for the world.over the next 15 years[1].It has offered.a vision of a sustainable,more prosperous world.where nobod. is hungry,and.people eat enough nutritious food.especially in Africa.Agriculture and.food.prod.ction are key to achieving the entire set of Sd.s d.e to their fund.mental role in societal and.economic d.velopment.To prod.ce enough nutritious food.to feed.the large and.ever-growing human population in a sustainable manner is a major challenge facing all countries in the world.The challenge is however more d.unting in Africa,especially sub-Saharan Africa.Agriculture and.food.systems account for more than a quarter of Gd.,as well as for more than 40%of employment in many African countries[2].To create,coord.nate,and.maintain“green”and.d.velopment”tags in African agriculture would.require a fund.mental shift in mobilizing the power of African food.prod.ction system toward.a sustainable agricultural intensification[3].Without any d.ubt,Africa represents the id.al environment for implementing the Sd.s by government policymakers,scientists and.business,particularly from an agricultural and.food.prod.ction perspective.d.e to limited.infrastructure,low ad.ption and.use of technologies,and.a flawed.system of knowled.e transfer by extension agents,Africa missed.out on the Green Revolution of the last century.Compared.with China,grain yield.in sub-Saharan Africa is still less than 2 t$ha–1,which can hard.y meet the food.d.mand.of its ever-increasing population[4].Hunger is highly prevalent and.still a major problem in many African countries.A more effective approach to food.self-sufficiency in Africa is to d.velop a mod.rn agricultural prod.ction system.Although this is still being explored.there are a few partially successful cases that have been noted.internationally;these includ. the use of N2 fixation technology as N-biofe
