Old climatically-buffered infertile landscapes(OCBILs):more than harsh habitats,Atlantic Forest inselbergs can be drivers of evolutionary diversity

Granite-gneiss rock outcrop inselbergs are ancient stable ecosystems with old,climaticallybuffered infertile landscapes(OCBILs).Although inselbergs provide key ecosystem services,little is done for their conservation and,so far,a lot of their unknown evolutionary history has already been lost by human *** a fine-scale approach,here we tested if habitat and environmental filtering(the inselberg’s harshness)affect the evolutionary diversity of an Atlantic Forest inselberg in *** recorded all trees with a diameter at breast height≥5cm in 20 plots in four habitat types(total sampled area of 0.8 hectares),from highest to lowest:island,hillside,foothill,and semideciduous forest(matrix).We also collected soil samples for chemical,textural and physical soil *** fitted linear models to test the effects of soil and habitat on plotlevel metrics of phylogenetic diversity and structure,lineage diversity,phylogeneticβ-diversity,and evolutionary *** found that the upper inselberg habitats contain a distinct set of ancient,closely related,harsh-tolerant lineages,as well as a subset of lineages that persist under harsh conditions with a certain degree of water *** inferior inselberg habitats harbor higher lineage diversity than expected by *** strongly predicted evolutionary *** concluded that soil depth,slope,nutrients and texture(environmental filtering)and habitat types and topography(habitat filtering)shape the evolutionary history contained in fine-scale inselberg habitats,which should encourage the conservation of these ancient ecosystems.

Aims We aimed at disentangling the effects of spatial distance,current and past environmental dissimilarity,and their combinations on tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover by addressing the following questions:(i)Is tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover related to the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity?(ii)Does tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover respond to paleoclimate(Last Glacial Maximum and Mid-Holocene)?Methods The study was carried out in 14 Atlantic rainforest sites in Brazil(20.4 ha sampled)containing 615 tree species from 83 plant *** obtained plot-level geographic coordinates and soil variables and site-level bioclimatic variables in the current,Mid-Holocene and Last Glacial *** used structural equation models with a distance-based approach to(i)test the direct effects of spatial distance and environmental dissimilarity and(ii)test the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic(Bray–Curtis distance)and phylogenetic turnover(Comdist and Comdistnt distances).Important Findings Our results suggest a weak indirect effect of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic and phylogenetic *** community turnover was driven by the direct effects of neutral,niche-based and historical ***,we inferred that the paleoclimate(historical processes)promoted the selection of the clades that gave rise to the current flora,while spatial distances(neutral processes)limited the dispersal range of species from the regional pool and environmental conditions(niche-based processes)locally selected the taxa that are able to persist.

Understanding rock mineralogy is essential for formation evaluation,improving the calculation of porosity and hydrocarbon *** primary method to obtain the mineralogy from a well is by applying a model to the geochemical tool’s chemical ***,creating a mineralogical model presents challenges such as the minerals’chemical composition and the decision to include a mineral in the *** traditional application of machine learning can make mineral models less realistic since conventional training is developed based on a set of minerals with different occurrences,lowering some minerals’*** present research proposes the stepped machine learning(SML),a stepped way to use machine learning to create a mineralogical model from chemical and mineralogical data.A database was assembled with the elemental concentration obtained with XRF analyses and the mineral concentrations obtained with XRD *** chemical elements were Al,Ca,Fe,K,Mg,Mn,Na,Si,and *** minerals were calcite,dolomite,quartz,clays,K-feldspar,plagioclase,and *** algorithms were tested:MLP,GAN,Random Forest,and XGBoost,with XGBoost showing the best *** was applied,where a mineral model results are used to train a subsequent *** allowed for a significant improvement in some models,notably to clays with an increase in R 2 from 0.597 to 0.853,quartz an increase from 0.673 to 0.869,and calcite,from 0.758 to 0.862.A decrease in the mean squared error of these minerals’models was also *** model was applied to the geochemical logs from three wells drilled in the Brazilian pre-salt,and the results were compared with XRD *** SML model was able to honor the mineral concentrations for different *** is demonstrated that the integration between machine learning tools and geological knowledge in SML was crucial for creating a representative mineralogical model.

Settlement predictions of footings on sands using probabilisticanalysis

The design of footings on sands is often controlled by settlement rather than bearing ***,settlement predictions are essential in the design of shallow ***,predicted settlements of footings are highly dependent on the chosen elastic modulus and the used *** paper presents the use of probabilistic analysis to evaluate the variability of predicted settlements of footings on sands,focusing on the load curve(predicted settlements)*** methodologies,the first-and second-order second-moment(FOSM and SOSM),and Monte Carlo simulation(MCS),for calculating the mean and variance of the estimated settlements through Schmertmann(1970)’s equation,are presented and *** soil beneath the footing is treated as an uncorrelated layered material,so the total settlement and variance are found by adding up the increments of the *** deformability modulus(ESi)is considered as the only independent random *** an example of application,a hypothetical case of a typical subsoil in the state of Espirito Santo,southeast of Brazil,is *** results indicate that there is a significant similarity between the SOSM and MCS methods,while the FOSM method underestimates the results due to the non-consideration of the high-order terms in Taylor’s *** contribution of the knowledge of the uncertainties in settlement prediction can provide a safer design.

This study aims to investigate the toxicity and possible effects and mechanism of action of the essential oil obtained from the Piper tuberculatum Jacq.‘s fruit(EOPT)on the central nervous system(CNS)of *** the Hippocratic test,it was observed ambulation reduction,sedation,piloerection and mortality of 25%at the dose of 1000 mg/kg and 50%at the dose of 5000 mg/*** results found demonstrate that the EOPT is endowed with a possible depressant effect,and is characterized by a likely sedative(open field test),anxiolytic-like(elevated plus maze test),anticonvulsant(pentylenetetrazole-induced seizure test)and hypnotic action(pentobarbital-induced sleeping time).These effects may possibly occur due to the interaction between the monoterpenes,present in its essential oil,and the GABAergic pathway confirmed by reversion of the effects by ***,these results demonstrate the therapeutic potential and the validation of the ethnopharmacological use of this species in the treatment of disorders affecting the central nervous system.

Production Optimization of Biodiesel from Frying Oil Waste to Reduce the Environmental Impacts

The objective of this study was to reduce the environmental impacts of used frying oil waste through the production of biodiesel. A 22 factorial planning has been used to evaluate the influences of alcohol/oil and reaction time on the biodiesel production yield. The optimal condition to produce the biodiesel has been found by use of the response surface methodology and analysis of variance to obtain the fitting model. This study was conducted in Campinas city, Brazil, where were collected the waste oil. An analysis of ecological cost also has been developed. Cooking oils collected from Campinas homes were mixed with ethanol in planned proportions （1：9, 1：7 and 1：5） and were transesterified at 60 ℃ and planned reaction times （30, 60 or 90 min）, in order to obtain biodiesel, using 0.1% NaOH as a catalyst. The results of the physical-chemical analyses demonstrated that the biodiesels obtained possessed characteristics close to those required by Brazilian standards. This fuel could be used in fleets of buses, trucks and machines, or even sold to fuel distributors, which results in a solving between US$0.8 and US$4.5 millions. Thus, Campinas would gain environmental credits and become a sustainable city.

Evolutionary fingerprint, phylogenetic and forest structure of tropical montane Atlantic cloud forests along an elevation gradient

Environmental conditions can change markedly over geographical distances along elevation gradients,making them natural laboratories to study the processes that structure *** work aimed to assess the influences of elevation on Tropical Montane Cloud Forest plant communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest,a historically neglected *** evaluated the phylogenetic structure,forest structure(tree basal area and tree density)and species richness along an elevation gradient,as well as the evolutionary fingerprints of elevation-success on phylogenetic lineages from the tree *** do so,we assessed nine communities along an elevation gradient from 1210 to 2310 m *** large elevation *** relationships between elevation and phylogenetic structure,forest structure and species richness were investigated through Linear *** occurrence of evolutionary fingerprint on phylogenetic lineages was investigated by quantifying the extent of phylogenetic signal of elevation-success using a genus-level molecular *** results showed decreased species richness at higher elevations and independence between forest structure,phylogenetic structure and *** also verified that there is a phylogenetic signal associated with elevation-success by *** concluded that the elevation is associated with species richness and the occurrence of phylogenetic lineages in the tree communities evaluated in Mantiqueira *** the other hand,elevation is not associated with forest structure or phylogenetic ***,closely related taxa tend to have their higher ecological success in similar ***,we highlight the fragility of the tropical montane cloud forests in the Mantiqueira Range in face of environmental changes(*** warming)due to the occurrence of exclusive phylogenetic lineages evolutionarily adapted to environmental conditions(*** temperature)associated with each elevation range.

Glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency and its correlation with other risk factors in jaundiced newborns in Southern Brazil

Objective:To evaluate the correlation between glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase(G6PD) deficiency and neonatal ***:Prospective,observational case-control study was conducted on 490 newborns admitted to Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre for phototherapy, who all experienced 35 or more weeks of gestation,from March to december *** screening of G6PD activity was performed,followed by ***:There was prevalence of 4.6% and a boy-girl ratio of 3:1 in jaundiced *** jaundiced neonate with ABO incompatibility presented G6PD deficiency,and no Mediterranean mutation was found.A higher proportion of deficiency was observed in *** was no association with UGT1A1 variants. Conclusions:G6PD deficiency is not related to severe hyperbilirubinemia and considering the high miscegenation in this area of Brazil,other gene interactions should be investigated.
