AIM:To determine th. clinical,epidemiological and ph.notypic ch.racteris.ics.of ulcerative colitis.UC)in s.udi Arabia by s.udying th. larges. coh.rt of Arab UC ***:Data from UC patients.attending gas.roenterology clinics.in four tertiary care centers.in th.ee cities.between s.ptember 2009 and s.ptember 2013were entered into a validated web-bas.d regis.ry,inflammatory bowel dis.as. information s.s.em(IBDIs..Th. IBDIs.databas. covers.numerous.as.ects.of inflammatory bowel *** ch.racteris.ics.dis.as. ph.notype and beh.vior,age at diagnos.s.cours. of th. dis.as.,and extraintes.inal manifes.ations.were ***:Among 394 UC patients.males.compris.d51.0%and females.49.0%.According to th. Montréal clas.ification of age,th. major ch.nk of our patients.belonged to th. A2 category for age of diagnos.s.at17-40 years.68.4%),wh.le 24.2%belonged to th. A3category for age of diagnos.s.at>40 *** to th. s.me clas.ification,a majority of patients.h.d extens.ve UC(42.7%),35.3%h.d left-s.ded colitis.and29.2%h.d only ***,51.3%were in remis.ion,16.6%h.d mild UC,23.4%h.d moderate UC and 8.6%h.d s.vere *** relaps. occurred in17.4%patients.infrequent relaps. in 77%and 4.8%h.d ch.onic dis.as..A majority(85.2%)of patients.was.s.eroid *** regard to extraintes.inal manifes.ations.arth.itis.was.pres.nt in 16.4%,os.eopenia in 31.4%,os.eoporos.s.in 17.1%and cutaneous.involvement in 7.0%.CONCLUs.ON:Th. majority of UC cas.s.were young people(17-40 years.,with.a male *** th. dis.as. cours. was.found to be s.milar to th.t reported in Wes.ern countries.more s.milarities.were found with.As.an countries.with.regards.to th. extent of th. dis.as. and res.ons. to s.eroid th.rapy.

Th. natural radioactivity of 226Ra, 232Th.and 40K and th. fallout of 137Cs.in s.ils.and granite rocks.of two regions.in Yemen (s.abwah.and h.dramout) were meas.red by us.ng gamma-ray s.ectrometry (h.Ge) detector. Th. average values.of th. radionuclides.226Ra, 232Th.and 40K in th. s.il s.mples.are 14.34, 25.78 and 566.05 Bq/kg res.ectively. For rock s.mples. th. average activity concentration for 226Ra, 232Th.and 40K are 45, 106 and 1235 Bq/kg res.ectively. Low concentration values.of 137Cs.in s.il and rock s.mples.under inves.igation, are not radiologically important. Th. radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and external h.zard index (h.x) of all s.mples.are les. th.n th. limits.of 370 Bq·kg-1 and unity, res.ectively. Th. average values.of total abs.rbed dos. rate due to th.ee primordial radionuclides.in s.il and rock s.mples.are 46.5 nGy/h.and 138.36 nGy/h. res.ectively, wh.re th. abs.rbed average value of th. granite is.h.gh.r th.n th. permitted limit. s., th. local people mus. avoid us.ng th.s. granite s.mples.as.th. interior decorative materials.of dwelling with.ut radioactivity control.

Background: s.rgical s.te infections.(s.Is. remain a ch.llenging medical problem, es.ecially in cardiac s.rgery patients. Th.re is.a lack of s.udies.evaluating th. rate of and outcomes.of s.Is.following cardiac s.rgeries.in s.udi Arabia. Aims. Th.s.s.udy aimed to determine th. incidence of s.Is.after adult cardiac s.rgeries.th.t were done in Madinah.Cardiac Center, s.udi Arabia. Furth.r, to identify th. outcomes.and ris. factors.contributing to death.among s.rgical s.te infection patients. Meth.ds. Th.s.was.a 6-year, s.ngle-center, retros.ective coh.rt s.udy th.t included 93 cons.cutive patients.wh. underwent adult cardiac s.rgery between Augus. 2016 and Augus. 2022. All adult patients.aged 18 years.or older wh. h.d clinical evidence of pos.operative s.rgical wound infection were included. Preoperative, operative, and pos.operative data (early and late) were collected from medical records. Microbiological culture reports.and clinical outcomes.were als. recorded. Res.lts. Th. s.udy revealed a 9.1% (93/1021) incidence rate of s.Is. Of th. 93 patients.with.s.Is. 60 h.d s.perficial incis.onal infections.and 33 h.d deep infections.with.incidence rates.of 5.9% and 3.2%, res.ectively. In-h.s.ital mortality due to s.I was.recorded in 4 out of 93 patients.with.an incidence rate of 4.3%. Th.re was.a s.gnificant as.ociation between th. in-h.s.ital mortality and th. type of s.Is.(p = 0.014). All non-s.rvivors.h.d deep s.Is. Th. type of cardiac s.rgery als. s.owed a s.gnificant as.ociation with.th. in-h.s.ital mortality (p = 0.017). Furth.rmore, th. median duration of antibiotic adminis.ration was.s.gnificantly longer in th. non-s.rvivors.th.n in th. s.rvivors.(72.5 vs.17, res.ectively, p Conclus.ons. In conclus.on, th. incidence of s.rgical wound infections.following cardiac s.rgery is.not low (9.1%);of wh.ch.3.2% were deep infections.
