Effects of a Plantago ovata-based herbal compound in prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy: A double-blind, randomized, controlled crossover trial

Background: Oral mucositis(OM) is one of the most common complications of mucotoxic cancer *** induces clinically significant pain, increases the risk of infections and affects the patients’ quality of ***: This study investigated the effects of an herbal preparation from Plantago ovata hydrocolloid in the prevention and treatment of OM, in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with a regimen including ***, setting, participants, and interventions: This research was a double-blind, randomized, controlled crossover trial. The herbal compound consisted of a mixture of 500 mg of P. ovate husk in 30 m L water plus three drops of vinegar per dose, which was used as a mouthwash. Phytochemical and physicochemical tests of the compound were also performed. Twenty-eight patients who developed mucositis during the chemotherapy screening cycle were randomized to the herbal compound(n = 14) and placebo(n = 14) groups. They received herbal compound or placebo three times per day during their next chemotherapy cycle(cycle 1 of treatment). Patients were crossed over during cycle 2 of treatment and received the alternative therapy. An oral care protocol was prescribed to all patients in cycles 1 and 2 of the *** outcome measures: The patients were visited at baseline, the end of the first and second weeks of the screening cycle, and the end of the first and second weeks of each of two treatment cycles. The degree of mucositis was used as the main treatment outcome. Other indexes, such as the severity of pain, xerostomia grade and the quality of life were also ***: Compared with the placebo, the herbal compound significantly reduced the degree of mucositis,the severity of pain and the xerostomia grade;it also improved the patients’ quality of life(P < 0.05).Comparison between the screening cycle and placebo treatment group showed that the oral care protocol had a significant effect in the reduction of OM(P < 0.0

Industry Dynamics in Pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceuticals is a relatively large and mature industry, and of growing significance. The industry has stimulated extensive research on determinants of its growth and development. Specifically, the distribution of firm size has attracted significant attention, due to tis relevance as an indicator of degree of industrial concentration. A large part of this literature has focused, since the early contributions, on the explanation of the shape of firm size distribution in the industry at a given point in time by reference to steady state arguments. The dynamics in question have been relatively neglected however. The main objective of this paper is to help fill this gap. It is shown that interesting issues arise when one considers how firm structure evolves over time, rather than simply attending to equilibrium implications of processes. Information on the shape and time-evolution of the size distribution of firms over an extended period of time can be used to make inferences about an underlying process;specifically, on which characteristics lead to which kinds of dynamics. To that end, we propose a diffusion model to examine the spatial dynamics of firm size. Instead of assuming a steady state as is standard practice, we consider that firm size fluctuates around its long run stationary equilibrium, according to a double process of temporal drift and random disturbance. An empirical application to real data from the Pharmaceutical industry helps fill a second gap in the literature, as only a few diffusion studies have employed real statistical data when analyzing firm size dynamics. Our empirical application confirms results presented elsewhere and offers some new insights.

Industry dynamics in biotechnology

The field of modern biotechnology is thought to have largely begun in 1980, when the United States Supreme Court ruled that a genetically-modified microorganism could be patented. The growth of the Biotechnology industry has stimulated extensive research on its determinants. One of the areas which has attracted a fair amount of attention is the distribution of firm size within an industry. What is less known however, is the dynamics of firm size. This paper considers a statistical model to describe the spatial dynamics of firm size across the biotechnology industry. It is found that firm size fluctuates around its long run stationary equilibrium according to a temporal drift and random disturbance. The empirical results illustrate that diffusion is a potential technique for the analysis of spatial dynamics of firm size.

Macroautophagy in sporadic and the genetic form of Parkinson’s disease with the A53T asynuclein mutation

Active and passive behaviors of gold in cyanide solutions

Active and passive behaviors of pure gold（Au） and roasted gold ore（RGO） electrodes were investigated at 25 °C in de-aerated agitated cyanide *** voltammetry and potentiodynamic polarization with agitation at 100 r/min in 0.04 mol/L NaCN solution showed different peak positions and current *** tests illustrate that the peak current densities increase greatly with increasing the cyanide *** the pH value from 10 to 11 resultes in a great decrease of current density,while it increases noticeably by decreasing the agitation from 100 to 60 r/*** the presence of oxygen,Au and RGO electrodes show different characteristics of peak positions and corrosion *** potentiostatic studies show that increasing the potential from 1 to 1.4 V at pH value of 11 results in an 80% decrease of current density while decreasing the pH value from 11 to 10 at 1 V gives a 1.7 fold increase of current density,possibly due to more effective passive *** polarization,electrochemical noise measurements（ENM） during decay periods show that Au results in more passive states at high potentials,showing pitting *** ENM results show that this technique can be a promising tool for a better understanding of gold *** XPS studies prove the presence of passive oxides.

Effects of herbal medicine in gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: Pyrosis and regurgitation are the cardinal symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Severalherbs have been used for treating gastrointestinal disorders worldwide. This systematic review was conducted toinvestigate the effects of medicinal herbs on gastroesophageal reflux disease and adverse events. Methods:MEDLINE (via PubMed;The United States National Library of Medicine, USA), Scopus, ScienceDirect,Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, Magiran, and Scientific Information Databasewere systematically searched for human studies, without a time frame, using medical subject heading terms such as“gastroesophageal reflux disease”, “reflux”, “esophagitis” and “herbs”. Manual searches completed the electronicsearches. Results: Thirteen randomized controlled trials were identified, including 1,164 participants from 1,509publications. In comparing herbal medicine to placebo, there were no significant differences in terms of heartburn(P = 0.23 and 0.48), epigastric or abdominal pain (P = 0.35), reflux syndrome (P = 0.12), and effective rate (P =0.60), but there was a significant difference in terms of acid regurgitation (P = 0.01). In comparing herbal medicineto drugs, there was a significant difference in terms of effective rate (P = 0.001), and there was one trial thatreported a significant difference in terms of epigastric pain (P = 0.00001). Also, in comparing herbal medicine todrugs, there were no significant differences in terms of acid regurgitation (P = 0.39). Conclusion: Thismeta-analysis showed that herbal medicines are effective in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease. Furtherstandardized researches with a large-scale, multicenter, and rigorous design are needed.

Morphometric discrimination between females of two isomorphic sand fly species, Phlebotomus caucasicus and Phlebotomus mongolensis(Diptera:Phlebotominae) in endemic and non-endemic foci of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran

Objective: To delineate reliable morphological characteristics for identifying and separating female Phlebotomus caucasicus and Phlebotomus mongolensis which exist sympatrically in the main foci of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in ***: Sand flies were collected using sticky trap papers from active colonies of rodent burrows installed from 16 catching sites. Morphometric measurements were analyzed of 87 Phlebotomus caucasicus and 156 Phlebotomus mongolensis. Univariate and multivariate analysis were carried out to determine significant morphometric variables for discrimination of the two species. Finally, seven morphological characteristics of 65 female Phlebotomus caucasicus and 124 female Phlebotomus mongolensis were ***: Univariate and multivariate analyses of 10 morphometric variables via Discriminant Function Analysis(DFA) and Principal Component Analysis(PCA) showed that five morphometric variables had an accuracy of 100% for discriminating female Phlebotomus caucasicus and Phlebotomus mongolensis. Moreover, PCA revealed that the five morphometric variables with the highest loadings separated these two species. Morphological studies on antennal flagellum(and its associated structures) and mouth-parts of female specimens demonstrated significant differences in several ***: The results show that morphological and morphometrical features can be used to discriminate two female isomorphic species, Phlebotomus caucasicus and Phlebotomus mongolensis accurately.

Having a comprehensive model of the kiln in order to reduce manufacturing costs, better performance can be created. In this paper, the influence processes in a simulated cement rotary kiln and operating parameters on the output of the study were to develop and validate the systems using the same batch. The followings were examined: solid phase, gas and coating temperature change in a rotary kiln.

The Effect of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention on Left Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease Assessed by Strain Rate Imaging

Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cause for left ventricular dysfunction. Unfortunately, the treatment strategies of regional myocardial diastolic dysfunction in patients with CAD have not been well characterized and benefit of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) as a treatment strategy is not clear. So the present study aimed to assess the effects of PCI on regional and global left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with CAD assessed by strain rate (SR) imaging. Methods: Thirty adult symptomatic patients with coronary artery disease that underwent coronary angiography and candidate for PCI on left anterior descending artery were enrolled to our study. Echocardiographic findings and early diastolic SR were measured before and 48 hours after PCI. Results: Mean age of the patients was 59.9 ± 8.3 years. Most of the left ventricular diastolic parameters showed significant difference before and after elective PCI;while mitral E velocity, DT, E/A and pulmonary vein flow before and after PCI did not show significant difference assessed by statically test. Also before PCI, mean (SD) of peak early diastolic SR in ischemic regions (1.89 ± 0.22) was smaller than of non-ischemic regions (2.53 ± 0.26) while after PCI this parameter became similar in ischemic regions (2.55 ± 0.27) and non-ischemic regions (2.55 ± 0.26). Conclusion: Most of the left ventricular diastolic parameters improved after PCI in CAD patients. Also regional myocardial relaxation as measured by peak early diastolic SR (ESR) in the ischemic segments improved significantly compared with that in non-ischemic segments.

Adherence in CABG Patients: An Empirical Test of a Health Behavior Model

To benefit from a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG), patients must adhere to their therapeutic regimen. To test the extent of which the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model constructs explain the variability in adherence behaviors in CABG patients, and also to examine the relationship between the IMB model constructs, CABG patients (N = 152) were randomly assigned to either an intervention group, or a standard care control group. They completed pretest measures, and were reassessed later. Although perfect replication of the IMB model’s predicted pathways was not achieved in this study, support for several of these pathways was demonstrated. The estimated model for adherence-demonstrated good fit of the data. Motivation was a significant predictor of adherence behavior in CABG patients. These findings suggest that IMB model-based intervention that improves motivation can enhance adherence. Therefore, CABG patients’ education programs should mainly target motivation in order to affect adherence behavior.
