Meter-scale variation within a single transect demands attention to taxon accumulation curves in riverine microbiome studies

Microbial communities inhabiting river ecosystems play crucial roles in global biogeochemical cycling and pollution *** variations in local microbial assemblages are important for detailed understanding of community assembly and developing robust biodiversity sampling ***,we intensely analyzed twenty water samples collected from a one-meter spaced transect from the near-shore to the near-center in the Meramec River in eastern Missouri,USA and examined the microbial community composition with 16S rRNA gene amplicon *** microbiomes across the transect exhibited extremely high similarity,with Pearson’s correlation coefficients above 0.9 for all pairwise community composition ***,despite the high similarity,PERMANOVA revealed significant spatial differences between near-shore and nearcenter communities(p=0.001).Sloan’s neutral model simulations revealed that within-transect community composition variation was largely explained by demographic stochasticity(R^(2)=0.89).Despite being primarily explained by neutral processes,LefSe analyses also revealed taxa from ten families of which relative abundances differed directionally from the bank to the river center,indicating an additional role of environmental ***,the local variations within a river transect can have profound impacts on the documentation of alpha ***-accumulation curves indicated that even twenty samples did not fully saturate the sampling effort at the genus level,yet four,six and seven samples were able to capture 80%of the phylum-level,family-level,and genus-level diversity,*** study for the first time reveals hyperlocal variations in riverine microbiomes and their assembly mechanisms,demanding attention to more robust sampling strategies for documenting microbial diversity in riverine systems.

Characterization of bacterial community dynamics in a full-scale drinking water treatment plant

Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of microbial communities in drinking water systems is vital to securing the microbial safety of drinking *** objective of this study was to comprehensively characterize the dynamics of microbial biomass and bacterial communities at each step of a full-scale drinking water treatment plant in Beijing,*** bulk water and biofilm samples on granular activated carbon（GAC） were collected over 9 *** proportion of cultivable cells decreased during the treatment processes,and this proportion was higher in warm season than cool season,suggesting that treatment processes and water temperature probably had considerable impact on the R2 A cultivability of total bacteria.16 s rRNA gene based 454 pyrosequencing analysis of the bacterial community revealed that Proteobacteria predominated in all *** GAC biofilm harbored a distinct population with a much higher relative abundance of Acidobactena than water *** coordinate analysis and one-way analysis of similarity indicated that the dynamics of the microbial communities in bulk water and biofilm samples were better explained by the treatment processes rather than by sampling time,and distinctive changes of the microbial communities in water occurred after GAC ***,20 distinct OTUs contributing most to the dissimilarity among samples of different sampling locations and 6 persistent OTUs present in the entire treatment process flow were ***,our findings demonstrate the significant effects that treatment processes have on the microbial biomass and community fluctuation and provide implications for further targeted investigation on particular bacteria populations.

MODIFIED STOCHASTIC EXTRAGRADIENT METHODS FOR STOCHASTIC VARIATIONAL INEQUALITY

In this paper,we consider two kinds of extragradient methods to solve the pseudo-monotone stochastic variational inequality ***,we present the modified stochastic extragradient method with constant step-size(MSEGMC)and prove the convergence of *** the strong pseudo-monotone operator and the exponentially growing sample sequences,we establish the R-linear convergence rate in terms of the mean natural residual and the oracle complexity O(1/ǫ).Second,we propose a modified stochastic extragradient method with adaptive step-size(MSEGMA).In addition,the step-size of MSEGMA does not depend on the Lipschitz constant and without any line-search ***,we use some numerical experiments to verify the effectiveness of the two algorithms.

Space telescope set to open a new chapter in China's solar research

A Graded Speed Control Method for Cyborg Rats Based on Electrical Stimulation of the Cuneiform Nucleus

The precise movement speed regulation is a key factor to improve the control effect and efficiency of the cyborg ***,the current stimulation techniques cannot realize the graded control of the *** this study,we achieved the multi-level speed regulation of cyborg rats in the large open field and treadmill by specifically targeting the Cuneiform Nucleus(CnF)of the Mesencephalic Locomotor Region(MLR).Detailed,we measured the influence of each stimulation parameter on the speed control process which included the real-time speed,accelerated speed,response time,and acceleration *** concluded that the pulse period and the pulse width were the main determinants influencing the accelerated speed of cyborg *** the amplitude of stimulation was found to affect the response time exhibited by the cyborg *** study provides valuable insights into the regulation of rat locomotion speed and highlights the potential for utilizing this approach in various experimental settings.

Multi-instance partial-label learning: towards exploiting dual inexact supervision

Weakly supervised machine learning algorithms are able to learn from ambiguous samples or labels, e.g., multi-instance learning or partial-label learning. However, in some real-world tasks, each training sample is associated with not only multiple instances but also a candidate label set that contains one groundtruth label and some false positive labels. Specifically, at least one instance pertains to the ground-truth label while no instance belongs to the false positive labels. In this paper, we formalize such problems as multi-instance partial-label learning(MIPL). Existing multi-instance learning algorithms and partial-label learning algorithms are suboptimal for solving MIPL problems since the former fails to disambiguate a candidate label set, and the latter cannot handle a multi-instance bag. To address these issues, a tailored algorithm named MIPLGP, i.e., multi-instance partial-label learning with Gaussian processes, is *** first assigns each instance with a candidate label set in an augmented label space, then transforms the candidate label set into a logarithmic space to yield the disambiguated and continuous labels via an exclusive disambiguation strategy, and last induces a model based on the Gaussian processes. Experimental results on various datasets validate that MIPLGP is superior to well-established multi-instance learning and partial-label learning algorithms for solving MIPL problems.
