Prioritization methodology for roadside and guardrail improvement:Quantitative calculation of safety level and optimization of resources allocation

The attention to road safety-related issues has grown fast in recent decades. The experi- ence gained with these themes reveals the importance of considering these aspects in the resource allocation process for roadside and guardrail improvement, which is a complex process often involves conflicting objectives. This work consists on defining an innovative methodology, with the objective of calculating and analysing a numerical risk factor of a road. The method considers geometry, accident rate, traffic of the examined road and four categories of elements/defects where the resources can be allocated to improve the road safety （safety barriers, discrete obstacles, continuous obstacles, and water drainage）. The analysis allows the assessment of the hazard index, which could be used in decision- making processes. A case study is presented to analyse roadsides of a 995 km long road network, using the cost-benefit analysis, and to prioritize possible rehabilitation work. The results highlighted that it is suitable to intervene on roads belonging to higher classes of risk, where it is possible to maximize the benefit in terms of safety as consequence of rehabilitation works （i.e., new barrier installation, removal and new barrier installation, and new terminal installation）. The proposed method is quantitative; therefore, it avoids providing weak and far from reliable results; moreover, it guarantees a broad vision for the problem, giving a useful tool for road management body.

Nowadays, mixed liver tumors are more frequently diagnosed due to better imaging, advanced immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining techniques and better knowledge of hepatic tumorigene- sis [1–3] . Such tumors represent a mosaic of components with dis- tinct histogenesis and carcinogenic pathways. As their occurrence in the liver is very rare, their behavior and natural history are difficult to determine, and their management remains empirical. An uncommon case of a composite tumor harboring hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatic hemangiosarcoma (HHS) components in a liver transplant (LT) recipient is reported herein.

Pentraxin-3(PTX3),the prototype of long pentraxins,seems to influence complement system(CS)***3 and CS sustain carcinogenesis,enriching tumor microenvironment(TME)with pro-inflammatory molecules promoting angiogenesis in prostate cancer(PC)and renal cell carcinoma(RCC).Furthermore,cancer cells overexpress complement regulatory proteins,such as CD46,CD55 and CD59,which negatively affect complement pathways for support cancer cells *** viewpoint aims to elucidate the ambivalent role of PTX3 and the CS in the context of tumor microenvironment(TME).

Updated overview on interplay between physical exercise,neurotrophins,and cognitive function in humans

The many important benefits of physical exercise also encompass maintenance or improvement of cognitive functions. Among the variousmechanisms underlying the association between physical exercise and brain health, recent evidence attests that neurotrophin receptor signalingmay have an important role, because the activation of this pathway leads to growth and differentiation of new neurons and synapses, supportsaxonal and dendritic growth, fosters synaptic plasticity, and preserves survival of existing neurons. In this review of published evidence, we highlightthat a positive relationship exists between physical exercise and circulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels and that the postexercisevariation of this molecule is associated with improvement of neurocognitive functioning. Less clear evidence has instead been published forother neurotrophins, such as nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3, and neurotrophin-4. Overall, promotion of adequate volumes and intensities ofphysical exercise (i.e., approximately 3 months of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, with 2—3 sessions/week lasting not less than 30 min)may hence be regarded as an inexpensive and safe strategy for boosting brain-derived neurotrophic factor release, thus preserving or restoringcognitive functions.

Effects of calibration process on the simulation of rear-end conflicts at roundabouts

A methodology for calibrating and validating VISSIM simulation model is presented that allows to replicate the observed vehicles conflicts. A roundabout case study has been selected to test the usefulness of a combined approach of VISSIM simulation package and the surrogate safety assessment model(SSAM) for providing reliable estimates of traffic conflicts. Safety performance has been assessed from the field by video-recording vehicle interactions at the roundabout, and then expressed in terms of time to collision(TTC)*** proposed calibration procedure has been performed by a multistage methodology involving microscopic drivers' car following behavior parameters to enhance the correlation between observed and simulated queue lengths at the roundabout's entries. The calibration procedure is based on a statistical screening of inputs leading to a linear expression relating significant parameters to the queue length. The best estimates of the model's parameters have been determined using a genetic algorithm *** spatial distribution of the rear-end conflicts and the TTC values determined by SSAM have been finally compared with the observed ones to analyze the capability of the model of replicating rear-end *** results suggest to this calibration procedure impacts positively on the estimate of the safety performance measures obtained through the simulation *** the good results in the evaluation of the model's accuracy, the simulation seems to fail in reproducing the traffic phenomena linked to unusual driving behavior, and therefore it is not able to replicate forced drivers' maneuvers that can lead to a conflict situation.

Design Considerations for an Underactuated Robotic Finger Mechanism

A design approach is presented in this paper for underactuation in robotic finger mechanisms. The characters of underactuated finger mechanisms are introduced as based on linkage and spring systems. The feature of self-adaptive enveloping grasp by underactuated finger mechanisms is discussed with feasible in grasping unknown objects. The design problem of robotic fingers is analyzed by looking at many aspects for an optimal functionality. Design problems and requirements for underactuated mechanisms are formulated as related to human-like robotic fingers. In particular, characteristics of finger mechanisms are analyzed and optimality criteria are summarized with the aim to formulate a general design algorithm. A general multi-objective optimization design approach is applied as based on a suitable optimization problem by using suitable expressions of optimality criteria. An example is illustrated as an improvement of finger mechanism in Laboratory of Robotics and Mechatronics （LARM） Hand. Results of design outputs and grasp simulations are reported with the aim to show the practical feasibility of the proposed concepts and computations.
