Riverscape connectivity is a critically important component determining the ecological condition of lotic *** evaluated changes in fish assemblages caused by the loss of connectivity by mine tailings storage dams(TSDs),hypothesizing that headwater fish assemblages are restructured by TSDs located downstream,even though the upstream habitats are not *** used standard methods to collect fish in 24 first to third order sites,with half draining to TSDs(dammed)and the other half free from this impact(undammed).To identify differences between treatments,we used PERMANOVA to test both environmental variables and ichthyofauna composition(Bray-Curtis similarity index)and evaluated the biological metrics that most influenced assemblage composition *** expected,we observed no difference between treatments for environmental variables,but we did observe differences in fish assemblage *** also observed five metrics with lower values in dammed streams(richness and abundance of intolerant species,siluriform richness,and abundance of Pareiorhaphis *** and Trichomycterus brasiliensis)and two metrics with higher values in dammed streams(perciform richness and abundance of Oligosarcus argenteus).We believe these changes resulted from of stream fragmentation by TSDs,in addition to source-sink mechanisms and conclude that mine TSDs located downstream change headwater fish assemblages,an impact often neglected in biomonitoring and bioassessment studies.

Advances in Assessment of Geothermal Resources of South America

Updated data for 1417 localities have been assembled for purposes of assessments of geothermal resources in South America. Analyses of these data sets have allowed improved estimates of geothermal resource base and recoverable resources for thirteen countries in the continent. The results obtained have also allowed identification of more than 20 crustal blocks where the resource base per unit area (referred to the accessible depth limit of 3 km) is in the range of 100 to 1000 Giga Joules, while the recoverable resources per unit area are in the range of 1 to 100 Giga Joules. Most of the high temperature resources occur within regions of recent tectonic activities in southern and central Chile, highlands regions in Bolivia, and several localities along the magmatic arc covering western Ecuador, central volcanic belt of Colombia and northern Venezuela. In addition, isolated pockets of geothermal resources have been identified along the eastern Andean belt of Peru. There are indications of occurrence of medium and low temperature geothermal resources at depths of 1 to 3 km in several regions in the eastern sectors of the continent, mainly in the northeastern and central parts of Brazil. In addition, considerable progress has been made in assessments of low temperature resources associated with deep fracture systems in Precambrian terrains. Progress has also been achieved in assessment of low temperature resources in deep aquifers of Paleozoic sedimentary basins. The results of such estimates are currently being considered for planning large-scale exploitation of the Guarani aquifer system, which spans over large areas of western Uruguay, northern Argentina and southern Brazil.

High-throughput phenotyping of two plant-size traits of Eucalyptus species using neural networks

In forest modeling to estimate the volume of wood,artificial intelligence has been shown to be quite effi-cient,especially using artificial neural networks(ANNs).Here we tested whether diameter at breast height(DBH)and the total plant height(Ht)of eucalyptus can be pre-dicted at the stand level using spectral bands measured by an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)multispectral sensor and vegetation *** do so,using the data obtained by the UAV as input variables,we tested different configurations(number of hidden layers and number of neurons in each layer)of ANNs for predicting DBH and Ht at stand level for different Eucalyptus *** experimental design was randomized blocks with four replicates,with 20 trees in each experimental *** treatments comprised five Eucalyptus species(***,***,***,***-dis,and ***)and Corymbria *** and Ht for each plot at the stand level were measured seven times in separate overflights by the UAV,so that the multispectral sensor could obtain spectral bands to calculate vegetation indices(VIs).ANNs were then constructed using spectral bands and VIs as input layers,in addition to the categorical variable (species), to predict DBH and Ht at the stand level simultaneously. This report represents one of the first appli-cations of high-throughput phenotyping for plant size traits in Eucalyptus species. In general, ANNs containing three hidden layers gave better statistical performance (higher esti-mated r, lower estimated root mean squared error-RMSE) due to their greater capacity for self-learning. Among these ANNs, the best contained eight neurons in the first layer, seven in the second, and five in the third (8 − 7 − 5). The results reported here reveal the potential of using the gener-ated models to perform accurate forest inventories based on spectral bands and VIs obtained with a UAV multispectral sensor and ANNs, reducing labor and time.

Hemoglobin Values in the First Six Months of Life in Exclusively Breastfed Children

Objective: The inexistence of publications on hemoglobin values in the first six months of life gave us the objective of describing these values, month by month in healthy, iron sufficient exclusively breastfed infants. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study in 306 infants stratified according to age from one to six months, full-term births, weighing ≥2500 g, without intercurrences at birth, serum ferritin levels ≥10 ng/mL, followed by the public health service encouraging and supporting exclusive breastfeeding. An automated counter was used for measuring hemoglobin, and serum ferritin was determined using immunoenzymatic method. Student’s t-test was used to analyze differences between means, and Mann-Whitney test when distribution was non-normal. Level of statistical significance was p 0.05. Results: The hemoglobin values, according to gender, did not differ statistically in the different months;the results are presented without sample division according to gender. Hemoglobin means and standard deviations in g/dL were: 11.7(±1.6), 10.7(±1.5), 10.8(±1.3), 11.6(±1.5), 11.7(±1.7), and 11.8(±1.6), from the first to sixth month respectively. Conclusion: The hemoglobin values obtained in all the first six months of life, based on a healthy, exclusively breastfed infant population, may contribute to the reassessment of reference levels for the diagnosis of anemia in the studied age range.

Metabolic surgery and intestinal gene expression:Digestive tract and diabetes evolution considerations

AIM: To investigate the effects of bariatric surgery on metabolic parameters, incretin hormone secretion, and duodenal and ileal mucosal gene ***: Nine patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM), chronic serum hyperglycemia for more than2 years, and a body mass index(BMI) of 30-35 kg/m2 underwent metabolic surgery sleeve gastrectomy with transit bipartition between May 2011 and December2011. Blood samples were collected pre and 3, 6 and12 mo postsurgery. Duodenal and ileal mucosa samples were collected pre- and 3 mo postsurgery. Pre- and postoperative blood samples were collected in the fasting state before ingestion of a standard meal(520kcal) and again 30, 60, 90, and 120 min after the mealto determine hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) levels and the lipid profile, which consisted of triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. Intestinal gene expression of p53 and transforming growth factor(TGF)-β was analyzed using quantitative reverse-transcription PCR. Gastric inhibitory polypeptide(GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1)were quantified using the enzyme-linked immunoassay method and analyzed pre- and ***'s t test or repeated measurements analysis of variance with Bonferroni corrections were performed as ***: BMI values decreased by 15.7% within the initial 3 mo after surgery(31.29 ± 0.73 vs 26.398± 0.68, P < 0.05) and then stabilized at 22% at 6mo postoperative, resulting in similar values 12 mo postoperatively(20-25 kg/m2). All of the patients experienced improved T2 DM, with 7 patients(78%)achieving complete remission(HbA1c < 6.5%), and 2patients(22%) achieving improved diabetes(HbA1c< 7.0% with or without the use of oral hypoglycemic agents). At 3 mo postoperatively, fasting plasma glucose had also decreased(59%)(269.55 ±18.24 mg/dL vs 100.77 ± 3.13 mg/dL, P < 0.05)with no further significant changes at 6 or 12 mo postoperatively. Aim: To evaluate photodynamic therapy (PDT) in vitro to reduce the growth of Candida spp, and its synergy with the antifungals fluconazole and ketoconazole for inhibition of resistant, DDS and susceptible isolates from asymptomatic carriers and with complicated vulvovaginitis. Methods: Between 2017 and 2020, we evaluated 230 women with vulvovaginal candidiasis and 400 asymptomatic. We obtained 130 positive cultures for Candida spp from vulvovaginitis and 94 asymptomatic. Yeasts were characterized by classical and molecular tests. Sensitivity to fluconazole and ketoconazole was evaluated by E-test. Dyslipidemia may influence enzymes and transfer proteins needed to the lipoprotein particle remodeling. Calculated indices and evaluation of lipoprotein particle size have widely been used to predict cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate HDL particle size and LDL particle size estimate based on TG/HDL-C as well as apoB/apoA-I ratio as possible marker and atherogenic indices, respectively, of cardiovascular disease risk in the presence of dyslipidemia. We evaluated 100 individuals of both gender, without treatment with lipid-lowering drugs, 27 normolipidemic and 73 dyslipidemic, such as isolated hypercholesterolemia (n = 16), isolated hypertriglyceridemia (n = 17), low HDL-C (n = 26) and mixed dyslipidemia (n = 14). The HDL particle size did not differ between groups. The TG/HDL-C ratio was higher in groups with isolated hypertriglyceridemia (4.2 ± 1.5), low HDL-C (5.2 ± 3.1) and mixed dyslipidemia (5.3 ± 1.6). The apoB/apoA-I ratio was increased in all groups of dyslipidemia (apoB/apoA-I > 0.5) when compared to normolipidemic (apoB/apoA-I = 0.5, p < 0.001). There was a positive linear correlation between the TG/HDL-C ratio and the apoB/apoA-I ratio in low HDL-C group (r = 0.507, p = 0.008, Spearman). The results suggest that the evaluations of lipoproteins particles remodeling markers and the use of calculated indices may contribute to the evaluation of cardiovascular disease risk when dyslipidemia take place.

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy associated with severe acute pancreatitis:A case report

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy is a rare disease that affects women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Although infrequent, the disease can cause maternal mortality. The diagnosis is not always clear until the pregnancy is terminated, and significant complications, such as acute pancreatitis, can occur. Pancreatic involvement typically only occurs in severe cases after the development of hepatic and renal impairment. To date, little knowledge is available regarding how the disease causes pancreatitis. Treatment involves supportive measures and pregnancy interruption. In this report, we describe a case of a previously healthy 26-year-old woman at a gestational age of 27 wk and 6 d who was admitted with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. This case illustrates the clinical and laboratory overlap between acute fatty liver of pregnancy and pancreatitis, highlighting the difficulties in differentiating each disease. Furthermore, the hypothesis for this overlapping is presented, and the therapeutic options are discussed.
