To the Editor： In a randomized controlled trial by Xu etal. comparing the performance of the Shikani Optical Stylet and Macintosh laryngoscope for orotracheal intubation in patients with cen, ical spondylosis, they showed that Shikani Optical Stylet compared to Macintosh laryngoscope was more clinically beneficial, especially in patients with difficult airways. In our view, however, there are several issues in that study making interpretation of their findings questionable.

To the Editor:By a retrospective study including 1124 hospitalized patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction(AMI),Wang et al[1] showed that the independent risk factors for acute kidney injury(AKI)were age>60 years,hypertension,chronic kidney disease(CKD),Killip class≥3,extensive anterior myocardial infarction,use of furosemide,non-use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors(ACEI)/angiotensin receptor blocker(ARB),and these factors could provide a prediction model"with good discriminative ability for the development of *** that AKI has been significantly associated with morbidity and mortality of patients with AMI,[2]their findings have potential clinical *** than the limitations described by authors in the discussion;however,we noted some methodological issues in their study that needed further clarifications.

To the Editor:In a randomized controlled preliminary trial comparing effects of propofol,dexmedetomidine,and midazolam on postoperative cognitive dysfunction(POCD)in elderly patients undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty with combined spinal-epidural anesthesia,Li et al[1]showed that intraoperative sedation with propofol compared to dexmedetomidine can significantly decrease risk of *** that POCD is associated with major adverse consequences,for example,an increased mortality rate,reduced quality of life,and delayed long-term recovery,[2]their findings have potential ***,we note that this finding is totally different from the results of a recent large randomized controlled study in elderly patients undergoing hip arthroplasty with the peripheral nerve block,in which patients sedated with dexmedetomidine have a lower risk of POCD than those sedated with propofol.

This study is focused on the expression of an SH2 domain-truncated form of protein tyrosine phosphatase SHP-1（designated ΔSHP-1） and the preparation of its polyclonal antibodies. A cDNA fragment encoding ΔSHP-1 was amplified by PCR and then cloned into the pT7 expression vector. The recombinant pT7-ΔSHP-1 plasmid was used to transform Rosetta（DE3） E. coli cells. ΔSHP-1 was distributed in the exclusion body of E. coli cell extracts and was purified through a two-column chromatographic procedure. The purified enzyme exhibited an expected molecular weight on SDS-gels and HPLC gel filtration columns. It possesses robust tyrosine phosphatase activity and shows typical enzymatic characteristics of classic tyrosine phosphatases. To generate polyclonal anti-ΔSHP-1 antibodies, purified recombinant ΔSHP-1 was used to immunize a rabbit. The resultant anti-serum was subjected to purification on ΔSHP-1 antigen affinity chromatography. The purified polyclonal antibody displayed a high sensitivity and specificity toward ΔSHP-1. This study thus provides the essential materials for further investigating the biological function and pathological implication of SHP-1 and screening the inhibitors and activators of the enzyme for therapeutic drug development.

Background Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome （HFRS） is endemic in Junan county, Shandong Province, China. We conducted geographic information system （GIS）-based spatial analysis with the objective of estimating the spatial distribution of rodent populations and their hantavirus infection patterns, to describe the spatial relationships of hantavirus strains in small ecological areas and to identify key areas in endemic areas of HFRS for future public health planning and resource allocation.

Recent studies suggest that PRL-3 is involved in the metastasis of colorectal cancer, but the mechanism concerning that has not been well defined. This article expresses PRL-1, PRL-2, and PRL-3 and the catalytically inactive mutant forms of those enzymes in SW620 and SW480 cells, two human cell lines derived from non-metastatic cancer and metastatic colorectal cancer, respectively. While the expression of the native forms of PRLs promotes the spreading, adhesion, and proliferation of these cells, the expression of their mutant forms inhibits the earlier-mentioned processes. These data thus provide a cellular mechanism for the role of PRL-3 in tumor metastasis and suggest that all the three PRLs have similar functions.

Mutants on stalk strength are essential materials for the studies on the formation of plant cell *** this study,a brittle stalk mutant of maize,designated as Bk-x,was screened from a Mutator inserted mutant *** the germination and early seedling stage,the mutant plants were indistinguishable from the normal ***,all of the plant organs were brittle after the 5th-leaf stage and remained brittle throughout the rest of the growing *** observation showed that the cell wall in vascular bundle sheath of Bk-x was thinner than that in normal *** leaf mechanical strength in Bk-x was 77.9% of that in normal plants growing at Xishuangbanna（BN）,Yunnan province and that was 61.7% in Wuhan（WH）,Hubei Province,*** proportion of cellulose was 12.3% in Bk-x,which was significantly lower than that in normal plants（26.7%）,while the soluble sugar content was 36.1% in Bk-x,which is significantly higher than that in normal plants（12.4%）.Genetic analysis using two F 2 populations and one F 2：3 families demonstrated that the trait of brittle stalk is controlled by a single recessive gene.

Oryza officinalis is one of the important wild species in the tertiary gene pool of Oryza sativa. It has a number of elite genes for rice breeding in resistance or tolerance. However, breeding barriers are so serious that the gene transfer is much difficult by sexual cross method between O. sativa and O. officinalis. Characteristics of the breeding barriers were systemically studied in this paper. When both the diploid （AA, 2n=2x=24） and autotetraploid （AAAA, 2n=4x=48） cultivated rice were crossed as maternal parents with O. officinalis （CC, 2n=2x=24）, none F1 hybrid seeds were obtained. The young hybrid ovaries aborted at 13-16 d after pollinations （DAP）. By rescuing hybrid embryos, in vitro F1 plantlets were obtained in 2x×2x combinations with the crossabilities lower than 0.5%. Lower rates of double-fertilization and abnormal development of hybrid embryo and endosperm were mainly observed in both combinations of 2x×2x and 4x×2x. Free endosperm nuclei in hybrid degenerated early at 1 DAP in a large scale. Almost no normal endosperm cells formed at 3 DAP. Development of a lot of embryos ceased at globularor pear-shaped stage as well as some degenerated gradually. The hybrid plantlets were both male and female sterility. Due to the abnormal development, a diversity of abnormal embryo sacs formed in hybrids, and hybrid pollen grains were typically abortive. It showed that conflicts of genome A and C in hybrid induced abnormal meioses of meiocytes.
