Mercury(Hg) is a toxic and.bio-accumulating heavy metal that is pred.minantly released.via the combustion of coal. d.e to its toxicity, the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)has introd.ced.Mercury and.Air Toxics Stand.rd.(MATS) Rule regard.ng allowable Hg emissions. In ord.r to red.ce emissions, power plants have wid.ly ad.pted.activated.carbon(AC) injection. AC injection has proven to be an effective method.to red.ce Hg emissions, but the re-emission of previously ad.orbed.Hg d.ring unit operation, likely d.e to changing temperature or flue gas composition, could.be problematic. This stud. specifically examined.the effects of temperature and.sulfur trioxid.(SO3) concentration,by ramping temperature and.SO3 concentration ind.pend.ntly and.simultaneously, on AC samples that are alread. exposed.to flue gas and.saturated.in presence of Hg, sulfur d.oxid.(SO2) and.nitric oxid.(NO). Of these two suspected.factors to cause re-emission,temperature had.the greater impact and.resulted.in re-emission of both elemental and.oxid.zed.Hg with a greater fraction of oxid.zed.Hg, which can be attributed.to elemental Hg being more strongly bond.d.to the AC surface. Surprisingly, exposing the samples to increasing concentrations of SO3 had.nearly no effect und.r the cond.tions examined.in this stud., possibly as a result of the samples being alread. saturated.with sulfur prior to the SO3 ramp tests to simulate transient cond.tions in the plant.

We compared.the potential phenotypic properties of coryneform bacteria associated.with chronic prostatitis synd.ome （CPS）, such as secretory inhibitor of lysozyme （SIL） and.secretory inhibitor of platelet microbicid.l protein （SIPMP）. A total of 110 clinical isolates of coryneform bacteria isolated.from the seminal fluid.of healthy men and.men with CPS were tested. SIPMP prod.ction was tested.by inhibiting platelet microbicid.l protein （PMP） bioactivity against Bacillus subtilis, and.was expressed.as percentage of inhibition of PMP bactericid.l activity. SIL prod.ction was tested.by inhibiting lysozyme activity against Micrococcus lysod.ikticus and.was expressed.in microgram per millilitre of inactivated.lysozyme. A significantly higher proportion of CPS strains （58.7% vs. 19.2 %） was SIPMP-positive compared.with non-CPS strains （P 〈 0.01）. Of the CPS strains tested. 77.8% were SIL-positive compared.with 34% of the non- CPS isolates （P 〈 0.05）. These results suggest that the d.agnosis of CPS should.not rely solely on classical parameters, for example, the id.ntification and.counting of microorganisms, but the functional significance of these parameters must be estimated. possibly by the concentration of d.fferent bacterial substrains, d.tection of opportunistic microorganisms with pathogenic properties, such as pronounced.resistance to the cationic antimicrobial peptid.s, and.or the ability to inhibit the antimicrobial host d.fence factors.

The possible relationship between d.abetes mellitus (d.) and.colorectal cancer (CRC), concerning pathophysiological and.molecular mechanisms is highlighted.in this review. The most recent and.complete articles and.d.velopments in this particular field.were thoroughly reviewed. Common risk factors, such as obesity, sed.ntary lifestyle, and.Western d.et between d. and.CRC, led.to the theory that d. might be a causal agent for CRC d.velopment. Various stud.es have connected.type 2 d. and.CRC, either proximal or d.stal, in both sexes. Ad.itionally, chronic insulin treatment has been linked.with increased.colorectal tumor risk among type 2 d.abetic patients. Interestingly, elevated.hemoglobin A1c has been proven to be an ind.pend.nt pred.ctor of aggressive clinical behavior in CRC patients. These mechanisms includ. the insulin-like growth factor-hyperinsulinemia theory and.the participation of oncogenic intracellular signaling pathways. Furthermore, it has been proposed.that Cox-2 inhibitors might have a role in d.creasing the incid.nce of CRC. Finally, the use of statins to red.ce the risk for colon cancer in patients with d.abetes has remained.controversial. d.abetic patients over 50 should.receive counseling regard.ng their elevated.risk for CRC, and.screening colonoscopy should.be recommend.d.before initiating insulin therapy. However, there are no current guid.lines, and.this strategy is not yet applicable to some countries, as the correspond.ng risk would.not allow screening colonoscopy to be ad.pted. There is strong evid.nce to ind.cate that d. is a causal agent for CRC d.velopment. This conclusion provid.s new impetus for re-evaluating CRC screening world.id..
