Driving the sodium-oxygen battery chemistry towards the efficient formation of discharge products: The importance of sodium superoxide quantification

Sodium-oxygen batteries(SOBs) have the potential to provide energy densities higher than the state-ofthe-art Li-ion batteries. However, controlling the formation of sodium superoxide(NaO_(2)) as the sole discharge product on the cathode side is crucial to achieve durable and efficient SOBs. In this work, the discharge efficiency of two graphene-based cathodes was evaluated and compared with that of a commercial gas diffusion layer. The discharge products formed at the surface of these cathodes in a glyme-based electrolyte were carefully studied using a range of characterization techniques. NaO_(2) was detected as the main discharge product regardless of the specific cathode material while small amounts of Na_(2)O_(2).2H_(2)O and carbonate-like side-products were detected by X-ray diffraction as well as by Raman and infrared spectroscopies. This work leverages the use of X-ray diffraction to determine the actual yield of NaO_(2)which is usually overlooked in this type of batteries. Thus, the proper quantification of the superoxide formed on the cathode surface is widely underestimated;even though is crucial for determining the efficiency of the battery while eliminating the parasitic chemistry in SOBs. Here, we develop an ex-situ analysis method to determine the amount of NaO_(2) generated upon discharge in SOBs by transmission X-ray diffraction and quantitative Rietveld analysis. This work unveils that the yield of NaO_(2) depends on the depth of discharge where high capacities lead to very low discharge efficiency, regardless of the used cathode. We anticipate that the methodology developed herein will provide a convenient diagnosis tool in future efforts to optimize the performance of the different cell components in SOBs.

目的:本实验研究了以非致死剂量脂多糖(Lipopolysaccharide,LPS)攻击半乳糖葡胺(D-galactosamine,D-GalN)增敏小鼠的死亡是否伴有重要器官的凋亡特征。方法:实验组小鼠以LPS(0.05μg)与D-GalN(20mg)直接攻击,而对照组小鼠仅仅以LPS或D-GalN,在规定实验时间经乙醚麻醉后,取出脑、肾、心、脾、肺、肝,并立即匀浆和抽提DNA,对所抽提的各器官的DNA以常规琼脂糖凝胶电泳分析是否存在DNA梯度现象;并测定血浆中乳酸脱氢酶和谷氨酸草酰乙酸转移酶,同时将DNA片段化现象与小鼠致死作用的关联性在实验组和对照组间做比较。结果:LPS攻击B-GalN增敏的小鼠4h时,在所检测的器官中,仅仅肝脏可见到凋亡特征DNA片段化现象,至7h时小鼠死亡。而仅用LPS或D-GalN攻击的对照组小鼠,不仅全部存活而且肝脏DNA分子完整。结论:LPS攻击B-GalN增敏的小鼠,肝脏是唯一出现DNA片段化的靶器官,由细菌LPS引发小鼠的死亡,肝脏的损伤可能是关键的原因。

Direct and noisy transitions in a model shear flow

The transition to turbulence in flows where the laminar profile is linearly stable requires perturbations of finite amplitude. ＂Optimal＂ perturbations are distinguished as extrema of certain functionals, and different functionals give different optima. We here discuss the phase space structure of a 2D simplified model of the transition to turbulence and discuss optimal perturbations with respect to three criteria： energy of the initial condition, energy dissipation of the initial condition, and amplitude of noise in a stochastic transition. We find that the states triggering the transition are different in the three cases, but show the same scaling with Reynolds number.

The accelerating diffusion of information and communication technologies(ICTs)opens up increasing interactions between nations and between social groups at all development *** purpose of this study is to assess the impact of ICTs on the gross domestic product(GDP)of countries at different development *** investigation of this study shows that in developing nations,the growth of the ICT sector is mostly consumer-oriented and focussed on the provision of electronic services for ultimate cus*** the contrary,in developed countries,it concentrates on the expansion of digitalisation with increasing socio-economic *** developing nations,the ICT sector’s contribution to the GDP is unlikely to increase.A few exceptions are China,India,Malaysia,and Serbia,which are among the top ten leading economies in terms of the growth of the ICT *** general,the role of ICTs in the GDP largely depends on the production structure,level of economic development,and employment *** results of this study can be useful for countries’strategic development in ICTs and for improving their digital indicators in the future.

Territorial Accessibility and Decision-Making Structure Related to Debris Flow Impacts on Roads in the French Alps

The Alps are highly impacted by debris flows that cause major problems for companies and transport networks located in the valley bottoms. One such event occurred in the Rif Blanc catchment and affected the road network in the French Alps, as well as adjacent areas across the Italian border, for several days in June 2012. This article presents two independent approaches to vulnerability assessment. Based on investigations conducted during a survey of local authorities following the event, we compared theoretical risk management and real crisis management in terms of decision making and modes of intervention. Functional vulnerability and territorial consequences were analyzed using a best travel time model of accessibility. We show that a bottom-up approach is practiced in case of actual management planning with a central coordination of general council. Conversely theoretical crisis management shows prefect as the key actor supported by several other state institutions. Our analysis also revealed that a debris flow event with a local impact on the road network has territorial consequences at a regional scale. This study contributes to the discussion about how to minimize the vulnerability of alpine transport networks prone to debris flows. Our results could serve as a decision support tool for public authorities.
