Ethnopharmacological relevance: Aqarqarha (Anacyclus pyrethrum) DC root has long been used as a traditional an-tiepileptic remedy in Unani system of medicine over centuries. Aim of the Study: To rationalize the ethnomedical claim and screen for anxiolytic and neurotoxicity profile of ethanolic extract of Aqarqarha (Anacyclus pyrethrum) root (APE). Materials and Methods: The anticonvulsant and anxiolytic potential of APE (100-800 mg/kg) was evaluated against Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), Bicuculline (BCL), Increasing current electroshock (ICES) and Elevated plus maze(EPM) models. Rotarod test was employed as neurotoxicity model including an additional higher dose (1600 mg/kg). Results: The APE showed significant anticonvulsant activity (p i.p.) in a dose-dependent manner but against BCL (30 mg/kg, i.p.) at the dose 800 mg/kg only (p 0.05). The extract also showed anxiolytic behaviour in EPM (p Conclusions: The results suggested significant anticonvulsant activity of APE against PTZ and BCL but failure against ICES. Moreover, APE also exhibited anxiolytic potential without any evidence of neurotoxicity at the effective dose level. We concluded that anticonvulsant effect of APE is probably mediated by enhancing GABAergic neurotransmission.

Growth, Yield and Quality Performance of Pearl Millet (Pennisetum americanumL.)

Livestock industry of Pakistan is expanding day by day. To meet its growing demand high fodder yielding and nutritious varieties of fodder crops are needed. Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum L.) is an excellent choice for this purpose. In order to explore the possibility of the better yield potential varieties of pearl millet performed in a good manner under agro ecological conditions of Faisalabad during the year 2012. A field experiment was conducted at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Randomized complete block design was used with three replications;the net plot size was 1.8 m × 6 m. The experiment was comprised of nine millet varieties named Cholistani Bajra, Barani Bajra, MB-87, Sargodha Bajra 2011, 18-BY, Super Bajra-1, PARC-MS-2, 86-M-52 and FB-822. All other agronomic practices were kept normal and constant. Data on yield and yield components were recorded by standard procedure. Significant results were recorded among the varieties for forage growth and yield. The variety 86-M-52 produced maximum forage and dry matter yield because of more number of leaves (14), leaf area (3540.1 cm2) followed by Sargodha Bajra-2011. All cultivars have statistically significant differences in respect of quality characteristics. However, non-significant differences were observed among cultivars regarding ash contents. The cultivar Sargodha Bajra-2011 has the highest crude protein (10.347%) and the cultivar FB-822 has the minimum crude protein percentage (6.733%). While PARC-MS-2 has the highest crude fiber percentage (34.667%) but variety MB-87 has the minimum crude fiber (24.333%). Variety 86-M-52 proved better for getting higher forage yield followed by Sargodha Bajra-2011 than all other varieties. Sargodha Bajra-2011 is the best cultivar that performed well in respect of quality parameters under irrigated conditions of Faisalabad.

Fasting for Laboratory Tests Poses a High Risk of Hypoglycemia in Patients with Diabetes: A Pilot Prevalence Study in Clinical Practice

Objective: Fasting for lipid profiles is a deeply-rooted tradition that is being revisited. In patients with diabetes, such fasting poses a risk of hypoglycemia, as observed in recent studies and case reports. This iatrogenic, overlooked, form of hypoglycemia has been referred to as Fasting-Evoked En-route Hypoglycemia in Diabetes (FEEHD). The objective of the study is to determine the prevalence of FEEHD in clinical practice. Methods: A two-page survey was administered to adults with diabetes on anti-diabetic medication(s). Patients were asked if they recalled having experienced hypoglycemia while fasting for laboratory tests (FEEHD) during the preceding 12 months. Results: Of 168 patients enrolled, 166 completed the survey, with a mean age of 55.3 (SD: 15.4) years. Seventy-nine (47.6%) were females. Of these 166 patients, 119 (71 %) had type 2 diabetes. Forty-five patients (27.1%) reported having experienced one or more FEEHD events. Notably, only 31.1% of the patients who experienced a FEEHD event informed their provider of the event, and only 40% of FEEHD events reportedly resulted in any subsequent provider-made medication change(s) to prevent future events. Conclusions: This is the first study of FEEHD prevalence in clinical practice, the results of which serve to increase awareness amongst clinicians about the occurrence of FEEHD. We believe that FEEHD appears to be overlooked by clinicians. The prevalence of FEEHD in clinical practice is strikingly high (27.1%). More concerning is the significant underreporting of FEEHD events by patients to their clinicians (31%). We hope this study will trigger further investigation to confirm these preliminary findings and modify practice guidelines.

In adults, Uveal melanoma(UM) is common primary intraocular malignancy with high mortality rate due to liver metastasis. Epidemiology and pathogenesis of liver metastasis in UM are not elucidated and no effective therapy is available for UM. IGF-1 is a growth factor involved in cell proliferation, malignant transformation and inhibition of apoptosis. Earlier, IGF-1 receptor was found to be highly expressed in UM, which is related to tumor prognosis. FoxO3a is a Forkhead box O(FOXO) transcription factor and a downstream target of IGF-1R/PI3K/Akt pathway involved in a number of pathophysiological processes including cancer. However, the role of FoxO3a in UM is unknown. In this study, we investigated the involvement of FoxO3a in migration and invasion of UM. Western blot analysis showed that IGF-1 led to activation of Akt and concomitant phosphorylation of FoxO3a which is associated with its translocation into the cytoplasm from the nucleus and its functional inhibition led to the inhibition of expression of Bim and p27, but an increase in the expression of Cyclin D1. The effects of IGF-1 on UM cells were reversed by LY294002 or Akt siRNA, and overexpression of FoxO3a also attenuated basal invasion and migration of UM. Taken altogether, these result suggest that inhibition of FoxO3a by IGF-1 via PI3K/Akt pathway has an important role in IGF-1 induced proliferation and invasion of UM. These findings also suggest that FoxO3a and IGF signaling may represent a valid target for investigating the development of new strategies for treatment and prevention of pathology of UM.

Analysis of Various Types Engineering Stripe Knit Fabrics of Bangladeshi Knit Industry

This experiment is generally based on the three types of engineering stripe fabrics named single jersey, full feeder lycra single jersey, and single lacoste fabric. In Bangladesh, conventional practices of engineering stripe fabric hardly seen. As the textile engineer, we focused to identify the basic difference between these fabrics. We kept the repeat length constant for all three fabrics. In these circumstances, how stitch length, yarn count, gsm, fabric dia, machine settings, machine maintenance, machine rpm varies into those three mentioned fabrics. It is the main motto of these experiments to make them more favourable into the trendy fashion world.

三氯乙烯(TCE)是常见的地下水污染物,通常对需氧生物降解具有抵制作用,在另一种化合物(如甲苯)的存在下,可以与之发生共同新陈代谢。利用实验室土柱对 TCE 和甲苯的耦合迁移和生物降解作用进行研究和建模。根据 Monod 动力学原理,建立甲苯的生物降解与微生物生长的关系;根据 Michaelis-Menten 动力学原理,描述TCE 的生物降解,并予以修正,以解释酶水平的变化。TCE 的生物降解模拟为甲苯降解速率的质量分数。生长和衰变都引入方程以模拟微生物群动力学过程。除初始生物量外,从独立的土壤分批实验获取描述两种降解函数的一套参数。物理参数从无微生物的土柱中得到。从柱室的入口到出口,初始生物量减少。甲苯在土柱中完全降解,大部分降解发生在最接近柱室的入口处。由于 TCE 比甲苯扩散快,变化速率慢,大量的 TCE 没有降解。

Influence of Seedling Age and Nitrogen Rates on Productivity of Rice (Oryza sativaL.): A Review

Rice is an important crop and the food security of the world is strongly associated with it as it is the staple food of half of the world’s population. Among various agro-management practices seedling age and nitrogen rates significantly affected its growth, development and yield components. Rice cultivars performed differently when transplanted in field at varying seedling ages depending upon their genetic makeup and adoptability to certain environmental conditions. Seedling age plays an important role in yield contributing parameters like number of productive tillers, panicle length, filled grains panicle-1 and 1000-kernel weight leading to higher paddy yield in different rice cultivars and hybrids. Nitrogen is required in huge quantity in rice production as it is an important constituent of plant parts and processes. Paddy yield increases significantly with the increase in nitrogen rate but after a certain limit yield starts decreasing. Keeping in view the significance of seedling age and nitrogen rates in different rice cultivars and hybrids, an effort has been made to review some research work already conducted and will be helpful to the researchers and scientists to plan future strategies.

Gut microbiome profiling and colorectal cancer in African Americans and Caucasian Americans

AIM To determine whether and to what extent the gut microbiome is involved in regulating racial disparity in colorectal cancer(CRC). METHODS All patients were recruited and experiments were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations by the Institutional Review Boards (IRB), committees of the John D. Dingell VAMC and Wayne State University guidelines. African American (AA) and Caucasian American (CA) patients were scheduled for an outpatient screening for colonoscopy, and no active malignancy volunteer patients were doubly consented, initially by the gastroenterologist and later by the study coordinator, for participation in the study. The gut microbial communities in colonic effluents from AAs and CAs were examined using 16 sRNA profiling, and bacterial identifications were validated by performing SYBR-based Real Time PCR. For metagenomic analysis to characterize the microbial communities, multiple software/tools were used, including Metastats and R statistical *** It is generally accepted that the incidence and mortality of CRC is higher in AAs than in CAs. However, the reason for this disparity is not well understood. We hypothesize that the gut microbiome plays a role in regulating this disparity. Indeed, we found significant differences in species richness and diversity between AAs and CAs. Bacteroidetes was more abundant in AAs than in CAs. In particular, the pro-inflammatory bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum and Enterobacter species were significantly higher in AAs, whereas probiotic Akkermansia muciniphila and Bifidobacterium were higher in CAs. The polyphyletic Clostridia class showed a divergent pattern, with Clostridium XI elevated in AAs, and Clostridium IV, known for its beneficial function, higher in CAs. Lastly, the AA group had decreased microbial diversity overall in comparison to the CA group.
