Phosphorus accumulation and eutrophication in feed-supply freshwater fishponds

The rapid growth and intensification of freshwater fishery can cause imbalances between phosphorus （P） input in feed and its output in produce. This aquaculture can result in enriching exogenous P in fishponds and, consequently, accelerates the process of eutrophication. To assess relations among input, accumulation, release of P and as a consequence degrading water quality in terms of chlorophyll-a （Chl-a） in freshwater fishponds, fourteen fishponds with feed supply, nine fishponds without feed supply, and five nonfish ponds in Shaoxing Plain, southeast China were selected for comparing P accumulation in their waters and surface sediments. Surface sediment samples were collected from each pond to evaluate their total P, water soluble P, Olsen P, algal available P, and P fractions. Water samples were also collected from the ponds to measure concentrations of dissolved P and Chl-a. Total P in the sediments ranged from 0.88 to 1.73 g/kg in the fishponds with feed supply, that in the non-fish ponds ranged from 0.47 to 0.86 g/kg. Organic P, accounted for 23% to 60% of total P in the sediments, was an important P fraction and increased linearly with increasing organic matter. Long-term application of feeds resulted in increased P availability in the bottom sediments and degradation of water quality in the freshwater fishponds. Compared with non-fish ponds, sediments from the feed-supplied fishponds contained considerably higher Olsen P, algal available P, and water soluble P. Higher proportions of the labile P （NH4Cl-P） and potentially labile P （NaOH-IP） were also found in the sediments from the fishponds. High solubility of P in the sediments resulted in elevation of P and chlorophyll-a concentration in the pond water. The dissolved P concentration in the pond water increased in the order of non-fish ponds （12μg/L）〈 fishponds without feed supply （24 μg/L）〈 fishponds with feed supply （66 μg/L）. linear correlations between concentrations of total P, Olsen-P, algal avail

Competitive adsorption and mobility sequence of heavy metals in urban soils of southeastern China

Heavy metals can be introduced into urban soils at the same time. Therefore, their selective retention and competitive adsorption by the soils become of major importance in determining their availability and movement throughout the soil. In this study, the availability and mobility of six heavy metals in eight urban soils collected from different cities of Zhejiang Province, southeastern China were assessed using distribution coefficients（Kd） and retardation factor（Rf）. The results showed that there were great differences in the Kd and Rfamong the tested soils. The adsorption sequences were Cr〉Pb〉Cu〉Cd〉Zn〉Ni, and the Kd decreased with increasing levels of metal addition. Ni generally has the lowest Rf values followed closely by Cd, and Zn whereas Cr and Pb reached the highest values. The results suggest that Ni and Zn have the highest mobility associated to the lowest adsorption, Cr and Pb present the opposite behavior. Correlation analysis indicates that soil pH, CaCO3 content, and cation exchange capacity （CEC） are key factors controlling the solubility and mobility of the metals in the urban soils.

Effects of resistin on skeletal glucose metabolism

Resistin is an adipokine highly related to insulin resistance(IR).The purpose of our research was to investigate how resistin influences skeletal glucose metabolism and explore its *** constructed the recombinant plasmid pcDNA3.1 expressing resistin and then transfected it into C2C12 *** expression of resistin in C2C12 myocytes was detected by Western *** uptake was measured by 3H labeled glucose;glucose oxidation and glycogen synthesis was detected with 14C-labeled ***4 mRNA was measured by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR).We observed that resistin was expressed in transfected myocytes,and resistin decreased insulin induced glucose uptake rate by 28%–31%and inhibited the expression of GLUT4 ***,there was no significant difference in basal glucose uptake,and glucose oxidation and glycogen synthesis remained unchanged in all *** is concluded that resistin inhibits insulin induced glucose uptake in myocytes by downregulating the expression of GLUT4 and it has no effects on glucose oxidation and glycogen *** findings may provide a clue to understand the roles of resistin in the pathogenesis of skeletal IR.

Study of a Novel Brain Relatively Specific Gene LRRC4 Involved in Glioma Tumorigenesis Suppression Using the Tet-on System

Multicenter clinical study on the efficacy and safety of inhalable insulin aerosol in the treatment of type 2 diabetes

Background A new inhalable insulin aerosol （Inh-lns） was developed in China. The aim of this multicenter clinical study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of this new Inh-lns as a treatment of type 2 diabetes. Regular porcine insulin （RI） was used as a control. Methods This study is a prospective, randomized, open-label, parallel-group multicenter clinical trial in which 253 qualified patients with type 2 diabetes received the insulin Glargine daily at bedtime plus either a pre-meal Inh-lns or a pre-meal subcutaneous RI for 12 weeks. HbAlc, fasting plasma glucose （FPG）, the 1-hour-postprandial blood glucose （1hPBG） and the 2-hour-postprandial blood glucose （2hPBG） were measured. Events were monitored for adverse effects. Results After 12 weeks, the HbAlc decreased significantly from baseline in both treatment groups, with no significant difference between the two regimens. In the Inh-lns group, FPG, both lhPBG and 2hPBG significantly declined from baseline after the 8th- and 12th-weeks of treatment. The reduced values of FPG or 1hPBG between the two groups showed a more significant hypoglycemic effect with the Inh-lns than the RI. After 12 weeks, the pulmonary carbon monoxide diffusing capacity （DLco） was significantly lower in Inh-lns group than in the RI. The main side effects of Inh-lns were coughing, excessive sputum, and hypoglycemia. Conclusions Inh-lns was effective in decreasing HbAlc like the RI. It was better in lowering the FPG and the lhPBG than the RI. Its main side effects were coughing, excessive sputum, and hypoglycemia. Also, Inh-lns slightly impaired DLco.

A morphological and anatomical study for tracking the growth and development of individual flowers and pods in soybean (Glycine max L.)

A morphology-based growth stage system should describe the growth and development of a crop and thereby help farmers and agronomists in formulating reasonable managementmeasures conducive to the development of marketable products. However, existing growth stage systems for soybean are either based on plant growth or covered particular phases of flower or pod development, making it difficult to use for tracking the entire growth period of individual flowers and pods. Therefore, the first flower and pod, located at the base of the primary raceme in the eighth trifoliate node of the main stem, were chosen to illustrate growth dynamics during the full reproductive period. The size and fresh weight of the primary raceme in the eighth trifoliate leaf axil, the first flower and pod, the pistils in the first flower, and seeds in the first pod were examined, and the growth of these organs was depicted. Integrating the morphological characteristics and growth features of flowers and pods, as well as existing growth stage systems, the growth and development were delineated in 13 stages. In detail, we classified the flower phase based on the relative positions of floral components, inspired by the ratio of bract to flower used for staging, refined the lag phase proposed previously, retained the use of pod length to define the early pod phase, and innovatively described the late pod phase by the seed appearance. The developmental events in each stage of flower and pod were distinctive and closely connected to the corresponding morphology. Taken together, a more detailed growth stage system for describing individual flowers and pods in soybean was established. This system will serve as a valuable research tool for describing the development, gene expression, and cellular metabolism associated with the formation of flowers, pods, and seeds. © 2025 Crop Science Society of China and Institute of Crop Science, CAAS
